Steelers, KC, Refs and Karma

Just like Brady6's famous thread at the beginning of September about which defensive player we just couldn't end up losing....people kept arguing between Mayo, Wilfork, McCourty, Talib, etc.

Then we just ended up losing all of them on some level.

Absolute jinx from the get-go, and I was sure to point that out :snob:

You sniffed that one right out from the get go.

Mike Pereira's take on both calls on Fox Sports (video at bottom of link).

The interesting part is, even if the officials involved aren't officially fined, they will effectively be "fined", in that they'll likely be barred from being refs in the playoffs.

FWIW, I maintain these are a far cry from the worst call ever against the Steelers....the KC refs at least got the OT coin flip right!

I can't think of an instance before this one where one team got so badly screwed and another team not participating in the game was more upset than the team playing in it.

Oh, please....lillloyd

He clearly yelled "headstails," and if you watch any of the NFL network shows about that coin flip, you'll clearly hear it on the microphone. I just watched a show last week where it was in the top 10, and they had multiple people comment on this fact. I actually believe that there have been Steeler players to comment on it too, even if Bettis won't admit it.

Living in Pittsburgh, I've been hearing about this travesty of justice for 15 yrs now. There have been Lions players who claimed that it was the old trick of Bettis calling one thing, while Carnell Lake called another, so either way they screwed themselves. On top of that, they immediately allowed DET to promptly march down the field to kick the GW FG only 2+ minutes into OT, so it's not like their defense was interested in stopping them.

If anything it was worth it, as the rules committee decided that the call must be made ahead of time, prior to the coin being flipped now--so Bettis' gaffe changed the rules forever.

That is honestly the first I've ever heard that. (Why would the ref care what Lake called anyway? Isn't there only one guy who makes the call?) That was ultimately a meaningless game in a lost season in any event, but I'd be disappointed to learn if this was just urban myth just cuz it's such an awesomely (allegedly?) horrendous call. The main takeway for me is that Phil Luckett needs a better PR guy...

Does it suck to live in Pittsburgh as a Patriots fan? While not quite the same thing, I grew up in the 80s outside of DC as a Pitt fan, while all my friends were watching the Redskins win multiple SBs. (Somehow, the 'Skins won a SB with Mark Rypien but David Woodley/Mark Malone/Bubby Brister couldn't do the same for Pittsburgh...go figure).

I don't believe in karma (AT ALL) but this whole thread feels like bad karma.
I secretly don't believe it karma, but fear the bad luck I will now get by saying that.

Does it suck?

Not if that fan living in Pittsburgh attended both AFCCG's and the Sep 2005 game.

All one has to do is watch the NFLN "Top 10" episode on controversial calls to
realize no team has benefited more from bad officiating than our friends in the burgh.
