As we all know the steelers missed out on the playoffs because the Refs failed to call a penalty vs the chargers on a failed field goal.

What i want to know is, Had KC won, And the steelers won all the tie breakers, Was points scored by the opponents one of those, and if so did tomlins blocking on kick return play a factor in that tie breaker?

If so Karma is a mean son of a b

Points would have never entered into the equation. In a five way tie at 8-8 Balt and the Jets would have been eliminated by Pitt and MIA, respectively, based on division record. Pitt would have won out over SD and the Jets based on conference record. Point differential and points scored is lower on the list, below record agains common opponents, etc. Pretty rare for that to ever enter the equation.

Pitt didn't make the playoffs this year for a ton of reasons that had to do with Pittsburgh's shortcomings. The KC calls that were missed (and there were two per Mike Pereira) were ultimately pretty far down the list of reasons. If you do what we did early in the season you really don't deserve to be in the playoffs...that has nothing to do with the KC calls or 'karma'. (FWIW, I think the 'karma' aspect was nicely handled last week against GB, when Pitt blocked a FG ad GB ended up with a TD on a separate wacky call).

All I know is that the Steelers have not won a Super Bowl since Big Ben's rape episode in Milledgeville. Cursed and karma.

By that logic, what exactly did the Cardinals do 66 years ago?

The 10 Longest Active Super Bowl Championship Droughts in NFL History

And btw the Pats seem to have done just fine post-Hernandez (just sayin' :noidea:). Karma's a silly concept IMO. Pittsburgh had major problems with talent and execution this year, not some cosmic, karmic force that actually cares about football.

Good luck the rest of the way. I'll be rooting for NE if they play SD or Cincy, and that inevitable clash with DEN should be awesome to watch for any football fan.

the pats cut ties as soon as Hernandez was taken into custody, giving up any chance of getting bonus money back.

Huge difference then giving Ben a slap on the wrist and a couple of games off.

Also I thought tiebreakers, when it came down to multiple teams, it skipped over the Common opponents and such and moved to the more easily decided points scored, points against/for.

Otherwise you have the whole 6 way paper scissors rock situation, few rocks, a couple of scissors, and a paper. who wins? paper beats all the rocks, rocks beat all the scissors, scissors beat the paper. you have to move beyond win/loss vs people and get into strength of schedule, and points scored. and since it was sd, jets, ravens, steelers, dolphins, and i want to say one other 8-8 for the steelers to win on tie breakers would have been deep down the list.

The Steelers and their fans have no right to complain about officiating after the fiasco that was Super Bowl XL.

No 8-8 team deserves to be in the playoffs.

I agree, especially since it was Bill Levy who blew that game, then later apologized for it.

Coincidentally enough, it was also Levy who blew the call in the SD/KC game yesterday, then apologized for it today.

Pittsburgh is 1-1 with blown Levy calls, but their win came during the biggest game of the year. All things considered, they didn't do too badly.

I don't believe in karma (AT ALL) but this whole thread feels like bad karma.

I think we already did get screwed by the refs this year.

This isnt about the steelers getting jobbed so much as, Had everything gone their way, would tomlins actions directly have put the steelers in the playoffs.

That's not quite right. In a multiple tie for a wild card, any teams from the same division can eliminate each other as part of one of the first tiebreakers. The odds of reaching the points portion in a multiway tie is actually pretty remote.

    From NFL.com:

    Three or More Clubs

(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of applicable two-club format.)

Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.

    NFL Tie-Breaking Procedures

Sorry, probably poor form to bring Hernandez into the discussion, I was just trying to make a point that I think 'karma' is a silly concept. Just my $.02. But certainly I don't want to open a 'accused rapists vs alleged murderers' debate...that's like asking if you're "Team Hitler" or "Team Pol Pot"...not a particularly useful discussion.

Anyway, carry on. You guys have had an awesome year (BB Coach of the Year?) after just a horrific offseason. I think that gets lost in the fact that we just expect the Pats contend every season, but this year is one that shouldn't get taken for granted.

I think there were a couple of key bad calls, and that overall the whole review system needs more tweaking (not just for the KC game but NFL-wide).

But bad calls even out over time. What cost Pitt a playoff spot was atrocious play in September, lack of discipline for the first 8 weeks, and a slew of turnovers and a ton of allowed sacks. Not to mention some key injuries in already talent-deficient areas. If you have to rely on another team to get you into the playoffs (and let's face it--Pitt had to rely on *several* other teams down the stretch, so in one sense Pitt was incredibly *lucky* prior to getting unlucky in the KC game!) you really don't belong there.

Just like Brady6's famous thread at the beginning of September about which defensive player we just couldn't end up losing....people kept arguing between Mayo, Wilfork, McCourty, Talib, etc.

Then we just ended up losing all of them on some level.

Absolute jinx from the get-go, and I was sure to point that out :snob:
