Day 3, 1st practice

The Patriots just concluded their lone practice on the third day of training camp.

With Tom Brady one of the notable veterans not participating, backup quarterback Matt Cassel ran the team's offense. He talked afterward about how it was a good experience for him to show his teammates he could stay on top of things. He said it was the first time he's taken all the first-team reps.

The crowd seemed to enjoy one drill in which running backs worked on pass protection. With rookie linebacker Corey Mays and veteran linebacker Larry Izzo charging ahead, the backs worked on setting their feet and using proper technique against rushers. On one repitition, Mays barreled into rookie Laurence Maroney, who did a nice job to execute the block. The two got tangled up and ended up on the ground, still battling after the play was over with a bit of jersey tugging. When they got up, they exhanged a handshake. That seemed to rile up the crowd.

In addition to Brady and linebacker Tedy Bruschi not participating, a few other veterans of note weren't present: receiver Reche Caldwell, defensive linemen Jarvis Green and Marquise Hill, and tight end Daniel Graham.

Day 3 practice
Posted by: Albert Breer

The biggest news, on the surface of it, from today’s session is that Tom Brady wasn’t in uniform. But the move, in all likelihood, was made to give the quarterback a break. The problem, for Brady, may be that he just got finished calling Troy Brown “country club” for getting practices off. And his teammates will probably find it funny that, the very next day, Brady shows himself to be a card-carrying member.

Some other notes:

– In addition to the 10 players on the PUP list, none of whom returned, WR Michael McGrew, TE/FB Garrett Mills, LB Tedy Bruschi, TE Dan Graham, WR Reche Caldwell, DE Marquise Hill and DE Jarvis Green – along with holdout Deion Branch — were absent.

...

– The team did a lot of red-zone work, both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11. Matt Cassel, taking all the first-team reps for the first time, looked sharp in that work but was a bit shaky later in normal 11-on-11.

– The team continued to mix and match defensive backs. Eugene Wilson, again, played just about every snap at corner, paired on the first team with Ellis Hobbs, Artrell Hawkins and James Sanders. Meanwhile, Mel Mitchell saw snaps at corner, while Chad Scott played at safety and slot corner. Sanders even moved down to play nickel linebacker in the team’s sub packages.

– The team was down to five defensive linemen, those being Le Kevin Smith, Santonio Thomas, Ty Warren, Vince Wilfork and Mike Wright.

Where's Sullivan? He's not on PUP....

yeah he is :)

oooh just checked, you're right, my fault, probably didn't pass the conditioning test

Sullivan choked on a partially digested donut stolen from the press area, and went into convulsions during the conditioning run. :p

Has anyone seen Matt Light back on the field yet, since he disappeared after the first day?
