Pats talking with punter Player
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 17, 2008 11:48 AM

The Patriots have been in conversations with veteran punter Scott Player about the possibility of joining the club. The 38-year-old Player would compete with incumbent Chris Hanson.

Player, whose appearance is distinctive in that he uses a single-bar facemask and sports a blonde Fu Man Chu, spent nine seasons with the Arizona Cardinals (1998-2006).

He punted in only three games last year, all coming for the Browns, who needed a short-term injury replacement for Dave Zastudil. One of those games came at Gillette Stadium against the Patriots, when he had five attempts for a 46.2-yard average and 34.4-yard net (2 touchbacks, 1 inside-the-20).

The conversations between the Patriots and Player were first noted by Channel 5 in Boston.

The Patriots also had veteran punter Mitch Berger in for a tryout on Tuesday.

All I can say is good.

They should be looking at kickers that they have faith in to kick a 47 yard field goal in the post season.

Funny, they don't seem to be looking at kickers right now. . . . [Besides which, if they need a kicker, they have Welker.]

Per Reiss the Pats signed, or are about to sign, Scott Player.

Player to join Pats

Veteran punter Scott Player is set to sign a contract to join the Patriots, his agent Vann McElroy confirmed today.

Player will apparently compete with Chris Hanson, who spent the 2007 season with the Patriots.

Last year, when Player signed with the Browns, the team's official website wrote a story on his unique single-bar facemask. Player is the last player in the NFL to wear the single-bar, and he brought his own mask to Cleveland.

Kicker Matt Bahr is believed to be the last player to wear the single-bar facemask in New England.

I smell a merge, but before that happens, I just gotta say: It's about time the FO started looking at FA Punters, if for nothing more than TC competition. Chris Hanson has no reason whatsoever to feel secure in his position. If we had more 2nd-day draft picks this year, I would be OK with using a 6th/7th-rounder on Durant Brooks.

Bring Player in just for the moustache.
