Pats hosting CB/KR Chris Carr

Re: Pats hosting Chris Carr

well I guess so far we've found out the Pats think the crop of CB's is lousy. I see the trading up for a cb at this point and adressing lb with a 2nd rounder.

I don't think they'll need to trade up. The way the first-round CBs are looking, they probably could have their choice of the top at #23.

Re: Pats hosting Chris Carr

Backup CB who has played well lining up in nickel and covering the slot over the past 2 yrs. He is athletic, although not that fast, and he is quick. Fluid with loose hips. He does well in both KRs and PRs but is not a threat to go the distance again due to him not possessing top end speed. Good 3rd/4th type guy who brings added value to due ST ability.

Re: Pats hosting Chris Carr

He is Chris Carr a.k.a "The Answer"

Maybe one of the mods can edit the thread title

Re: Pats hosting Chris Carr

I like that term!! We need Quality CB's, Defense wins championships!
we did win the super bowl with undrafted rookie Randall Gay starting and having Gus Scott at free saftey

Re: Pats hosting Chris Carr

I don't see much difference between the corners projected at 18 and at 35. 18 is aout how far we could trade up with our 23 and 89.

Carr was a darn good return guy a couple years ago, if I'm remembering properly.

thats assuming the team we would be trading with strictly follows the value chart. i think the value chart is stupid. how can the same value chart be used for every draft. for example

what if there is a draft with 8 sure fire studs. after them, there are 15 guys thought of as highly. after that there is a grouping of another 40 guys. each subsequent talent grouping consists of 40 guys

the second draft has 3 sure fire studs. after that there are 25 guys thought of highly. then there is a group of 80 guys. after that, each subsequent group consists of 80 guys.

in the first draft, picking in the top 8 is huge. so to go from #9 in the draft into the top 8, you probably have to give up something big in addition. later on, there is less movement you have to make to get into a higher group than in draft scenario 2.

in the second draft, it is going to be downright impossible to get into the top 3. but even if you miss, there is such a big cluster of similar players than trading isn't that necessary, and in fact, trading down 6 spots, doesnt make a difference. and if you can pick up an extra pick, it would be amazing, regardless of where you move from becuase there are so many good players clustered together.

so to me, the draft chart is flawed, greatly

Re: Pats hosting Chris Carr

Carr broke in as KR with the Raiders went to Tenn in a similar role. He did see time last year and I saw him in quite a few games toward the end of the year, he played alot better than I thought he would he is very fast/quick lacks size, decent option for KR/Nickel/Dime.

Re: Pats hosting Chris Carr

Any news from the visit? I did not sleep last night thinking whether or not we'd be able to ink Chris Bahr, the suspense is killing me

Yes, right now Carr and Belichick are in Belichick's office drinking some iced Gatorades, cherry flavored for Belichick and lemon-lime for Carr. They are discussing Carr's time in Tennessee, and Belichick jokes if he ever had a chance to visit Graceland.

Haven't you been keeping updated on Belichick's up-to-the-minute free agent visits and team injuries blog.

I'm sure we'll all know sooner or later, and once we do, I'm sure Belichick will have a copy of the contract available for our approval.

 You are one Bad Mo-Fo

Re: Pats hosting Chris Carr

Don't know or care if they sign this guy, but man I'd love to see them draft/sign a premiere return specialist. Hobbs is good on kicks, but hate to see him out there, and I can't remember the last time the Pats broke off a 30+ punt return, though Welker might have done it once last year. (?)
I have to disagree, I think drafting a return specialist is a waste of a draft pick. The only thing with a shorter shelf life in the NFL than a RB is a KR/PR. There's good reason for that: a RB gets the ball, and 11 opponents converge on him and hit him as hard as they can; result is those hits sooner or later result in an injury to the RB.

The return specialist faces the same problem as the RB, but his risk of injury is far greater. The RB faces the momentum of opponents that are taking a step or two before hitting him; the return specialist - though being hit by lighter tacklers - has to contend with much greater velocity; the opponents hitting him are not just taking a step or two before impact, but are running at top speed after sprinting 40 or more yards. The result is guys like Dante Hall, who are all world one year and never heard of again the next season.

As for long punt returns, yeah, we would all like to see that; but consider this: according to nfl.com there were just 28 punt returns of 40 or more yards - of which Welker had one. That averages out to less than one per team, so to expect that kind of return to happen multiple times per year is unreasonable.

A good example with drafting a return specialist occured just last year. With their second round pick Tampa Bay selected Dexter Jackson - rather than DeSean Jackson. Dexter Jackson could not only pass Ike Hilliard and Maurice Stovall on the depth chart as a receiver, but he also lost his job returning kicks due to lack of productivity. Tampa Bay then found a much better return solution already on their roster with Clifton Smith; the bottom line being they completely threw away a draft pick on a return guy.

There are only seven rounds in the draft; I see no need to use one of those picks on a return specialist.

Chris Carr is a pretty good kick returner and I remember how annoying he was on opening day of '05 against the Raiders.

This guy is pretty freaking fast. I've watched a few of his returns for the Raiders and I'm telling you this kid is fast.<{ditto} In the right special teams unit I know with almost certainty this guy could take 3+ to the house this season. I have no doubt that Scott Obrien from Denver has mentioned this guy to Bill Belichick. I'd be ecstatic with this signing.

Re: Pats hosting Chris Carr

If he comes lets just hope that takes Welker out of Punt Returner role

Fast is always better :D

Amen. Some good rookie looks at PR/KR, too: Sammie Stroughter, Mike Wallace, Mike Thomas.

Hey, they spent a second-rounder on Bethel and he won a game or two, why not spend a Day Two pick on another specialist, at least to help keep Welker and Faulk off the punt team?
