Patriots & Saints Joint Practice 8/19

I'm encouraged by the competition at the CB position. I think we'll be fine in the secondary, especially considering who our safeties are and how well our front 7 has been playing.

We've seen some nightmares of a secondary in past years, but this isn't one of those years

@nick_underhill: Joe Morgan just burned Malcolm Butler for a big gain

@MikeReiss: Scene-setter: Saints going at CB Malcolm Butler with success in 11-on-11 drills. Butler called for one penalty on TD drive as well.

@MikeGiardi: Let's just say Malcolm Butler has had better days. Considerably better days

@jeffphowe: Bad drive for Butler vs. Brees offense. Started with an INC then gave up three catches, including 40-yarder and a TD. Plus a PI flag.

Well he is young. We know he can do better and he will have off days.

@MarkDanielsPJ: 11-on-11s I have Brady 12/15 and Garoppolo 7/10

@jeffphowe: Practice coming to a close. Brady was 18 of 24 in team drills. Garoppolo 11 of 18. Brees 11 of 17 in 11-on-11s.

At least it sounds like Brown may emerge as a legitimate #2 for us.

Right now it sounds like

#1 Butler
#2 Brown
slot McClain

Ryan, Roberts Fletcher all looking to jump in. The good news is if someone has an off day you can put in another CB who has a chance to do well.

@MikeReiss: Undrafted free-agent receiver Chris Harper, who hauled in a deep ball late in practice, showed up a few times this morning. #Patriots

Yeah, sounds like the Saints undressed Butler.

Good day for the D considering Butler had one of his worst practices all training camp. If he was on his game Brees would be more like 9 for 17.

Heard good things about McCourty and Brown today.

Butler had an off day, but he's had far more good days than bad ones in camp so far.

These scrimmages always make offenses look unstoppable

Riley Cooper looked like Megatron last Summer

And to make it even better we know Brees is pretty darn good. The #2 spot is open if Brown can take it.

Cooks is no slouch either. Encouraging.

Of note. The only QBs Butler has faced so far this year have been Brady, Rodgers, Brees (and Jimmy a little).

Not a bad trial by fire.

And he's done well for the most part. He did pretty well last year against Manning too (in the limited amount of time he got to play that game.)

Also of note. Seems The Saints had all 5 starters out in the secondary. So take the pass catching with a grain of salt. I mean we have some of our guys at WR out too but it is back ups vs back ups.
