I see lot of talk on these boards in various places about the possibility of signing free agent Lance Briggs from the Bears. I just don't want anyone to have false expectations but Urlacher is wrapped up until 2010 so if need be they slap a franchise tag on Briggs. thats the word out of the Windy City. He is not going anywhere soon. Sorry.( i don't mean to sound jerky either.. just trying to be informative)

Yeah, I was wondering about that as well...hows their cap situation, can they take that big a hit...also, how good is fletcher and thomas...is briggs definitely the best of the group?

The thing about Briggs or Thomas is they can play OLB or ILB in the 3-4. They both have enough size and speed to do either.

Both will not be available. We'll sign a guy like London-Fletcher or Donnie Edwards, probably.

Briggs really impressed me in our game earlier this season, however I wasnt really looking out for fletcher when we played buffalo, so I don't know much about him...would the ravens put the tag on thomas as well...

Also, is Briggs playing colvins old spot in chicago, were they there together?

All year whenever anyone brought up Briggs's name I'd point out that he'll be tagged. I appreciate your effort in spreading the word.

I doubt this thread will have any effect though. Even though everyone knows the Pats will tag Asante we continue to see speculation on whether he'll leave via free agency.

Even though people know their discussions are irrelevant they still seem to enjoy having them.

I think Thomas is the best fit for our defense, and that we will pursue him the strongest

I have heard that too. I also hear, more and more often, how resentful players get about the tag. It sounds as if it is never a first option--nor does it sound as if applying the tag guarantees that the player won't try to negotiate a way out, while the team gets compensation.

Chicago is sick with defensive talent. Can't they let one guy go? :)

I was reading somewhere that the reason they would let him go would be to spend more money on the offensive side of the ball...not sure what their cap situation is either.

I think London Fletcher(-Baker) would be a great sign for the Pats. He doesn't get the publicity of Ray Lewis, Urlacher, or even Jonathan Vilma, but he's just as good.

Briggs would be great but if he gets slapped with the franchise tag don't count on that... Fletcher is about 33 so the Bills may just let him walk -- if so the Pats could get 2-3 solid years out of him. Then there's Donnie Edwards, he wants out of SD and the Pats were close in 06 to getting him.

Of course you could always draft a guy like Patrick Willis or Paul Posluszny (who I think is a great fit in the Pats scheme). I'm excited either way and am sure the Pats Front Office will make the right move(s).
