I noticed he played FAR less than expected and missed long stretches of the game. Someone mentioned a knee to the helmet, his bell rung, etc... - can we assume he would otherwise have carried a bit more of the load today? I assume once the second half came, the staff figured they should limit the wear and tear since the game was in hand. Would youy guys say that's accurate?

Anoyne with any more details, please post. I was concerned during the game - and amazed that Nantz and Simms didn't seem to comment on it when LoMo was MIA for long stretches.

They're conserving him for late in the season. Maroney hasn't exactly proven himself durable, so it'd be better to have him healthy for when the cold weather games start coming and you have teams you can dash on the ground like the Bengals.

Did BB say anything after - not that he'd ever reveal thing one about a player, but was he even asked about Maroney's usage? Any sense from any of the post-game comments as to why LoMo saw somewhat limited(-ish) reps?

He was used "FAR less than expected?"

You were expecting far more than 20 carries?

Why can't any player not be on the field without massive paranoia setting in? This board has now been riddled with posts about Stallworth, and now Maroney. They all played. Some might have got some bumps during the game, but they all played in the 4th quarter. Sometimes the game just goes in a certain direction, and that may or may not include certian players.

It was the most carries he's had in a game so far.

Yeah, wasn't this game the most caries he has ever had in a single game?

They said career high in carries. I hope we don't wear him out in Sept.
Seems like the right amount of carries to me.

I apologize for a bit of hyperbole. I do acknowledge that he got his career-high in carries - but you have to admit there were loooong stretches, consecutive series where he didn't come in for a single snap. This concerned me AT THE TIME, as it should have most Pats fans. Given that it turns out he got hurt, I don't think that being concerned that he was MIA for long stretches is the same thing as worrying about Stallworth's reps.

No need to use Maroney more than the Pats did because Morris was doing an EXCELLENT job carving up the jets defense.

I think that BB is trying to replicate last year, where you have no single feature back. But I think that Morris will prove better than Dillon. Morris has more speed, good vision, and surprising power. So I think Maroney, and Morris will split the carries, to help each of them down the stretch. If I'm right we'll have the M@M duo.

I didn't find the changes in Maroney's or Morris' carries during the game unusual, as the Jets adjusted their D to the blocking schemes a few times throughout the game. To me, it seemed the Pats were one-step ahead in that they took what the Jets gave them.

In this case, it makes sense, as Maroney started out with multiple carries and successful ones at that. Once the D cheated to the run, the pass was unveiled and the Pats seemed to play yoyo with the Jets D all day. They took what was there at any given time. With all the weapons on offense, no one player can expect a prescribed number of touches in any game. This is as opportunistic an offense as the team has ever had. That's all good news to Pats fans, and bad news to opponents.

Nobody said he was hurt seriously, no one's panicking - I just referred to another thread where someone said that Maroney took a knee to the helmet and that's why he was out for 2 or 3 consecutive series.

According to CBS, he did. While Penny was writhing in agony, the graphic popped up that said "Seymour: 1 sack for 8 yards."

He had 20 carries so I think he's fine. BB probably wanted to see what Sammy Morris could do and just because the talking heads figured that LM would be the feature back, he went with the committee to buck the conventional wisdom.

Sure LM can be spectacular at times, but he still has some maturation to do and why not continue to ease him in while saving some additional wear and tear.
