What is dead money?

This is pretty much the list that I had come up with. It's good to compare. Thanks.

With potentially close to $30M to spend (including money for the draft, PS, and contingency funds) the Pats have to address the following:

1. #1 CB. Hopefully Revis.
2. DT. Re-signing Wilfork and/or Branch, or external veteran UFA (Kenrick Ellis, Ahtyba Rubin, etc.).
3. LG. Connolly or other FA.
4. 3rd down RB. Probably not Vereen. Pierre Thomas and Roy Helu could be options.
5. Rotational EDGE player. Akeem Ayers, Jabaal Sheard, etc.
6. #3 WR if Amendola is cut.

TE depth is also a possibility.

There is money to make most of this happen if the Pats free up cap space as outlined, but even so the Pats will have to be selective and manage things carefully.

Not sure where you are getting $30m number from .. when McCourty deal goes through they are appx $9.5 under the cap.. Going off of Miguel's bolded suggestions they can save an additional $12-14m tops.

That leaves Revis when they re-sign him with cap hit of at least $10m and you need appx $5m for rookies.. so not a ton of cash to go get others imo.

It will be very interesting to see how things unfold.. because you have guys like Wendell, Arrington and Mayo that make more sense to cut or to rework during training camp once they know what they have.

From the end of Miguel's article:
As you can see from above, the Pats could create up to $18.4 million in cap space if they chose to do all of my bolded predictions. The $18.4 million is in addition to the $9.55 million they already have.

$18.4 + $9.55 = $27.95M. That qualifies as "close to $30M" in my book.
