I think Mangini would kill to be the defensive coordinator for the Patriots.

I wonder if Bill gave him the brilliant idea to trade away Cutler.

If Cutler was still in Denver they'd be really really good.

Ya think ? I'm sure somewhere it says " Lose players that think they are bigger then the team, long term it hurts the whole team more then anything they can bring to the team in the short term "

Good point, although that wasn't the intent of your post, I'll make up for your lack of insight ;-)

I have a sneaking suspicion that if McD thought Cutler would turn into the second comming of #12 in this offense he wouldn't have been so motivated to ship his butt out of town.

Further contributes to the idea that Belichick knows well in advance when his assistants will be leaving town; all indications had Pioli and McDaniels leaving long before they actually did.

Let's just hope, for the Patriots' purposes, that the "grooming year" for Nick Caserio doesn't take place for at least a few more years, although Nick's stock definitely seems to be rising. Otherwise, the coaching staff is in the same situation as the Red Sox are in now, post-Papelbon, Pedroia, Lester, etc.; the next wave of prospects isn't quite ready. The name that really comes to mind is Matt Patricia, but the road for him (i.e. DC) is blocked.

Scouting wise, the Patriots quietly had a LOT of turnover this past offseason, losing obviously Pioli, but also three long-time area scouts (Marvin Allen to ATL, Jim Nagy to KC, Adam Peters to DEN) and their college scouting coordinator (Jay Muraco to KC). That certainly led to Jason Licht coming back and Floyd Reese coming in, as well as the promotions of Jon Robinson (D of CS), Bob Quinn (AD of ProP), and Monti Ossenfort (National Scout). That leaves Tim Heffelfinger as, IIRC, the longest-tenured area scout, with DuJuan Daniels, Frantzy Jourdain, and Kyle O'Brien all moving up there.

Good info pats1. It seems that Caserio is doing more media type-stuff than Pioli did. No question that he is being positioned as a top-of-an-org presence. Same goes for Pees IMO. Havent heard a peep out of Reese.

umm, did u have this memorized?

    2 questions...
    1. if we lose to the broncos (i dont see it happening) u think BB would be proud at McDaniels, or angry at himself?
    2. if we start winning by a blowout, do we still go for TD's in the 4th Quarter?

Reese's situation (and his role) is interesting. I saw him a lot during camp talking to Robert Kraft. Supposedly he was supposed to negotiate contracts, which I'm sure he is, but research director Richard Miller does the rookie ones now (general counsel Jack Mula did in the past). So I'm not sure exactly where Reese is fitting in. At this point, it appears he is more of just a voice in Belichick's year and Caserio's (that Pioli once provided) than he is a decision maker.

It is a great story, McDainels is the atypical Pats coach who rose through the ranks and learned from BB.. in turn BB prepared him for the next step.. it is all good.

For some reason Mangini did not get it..

I can't wait until they both give the same lame wristed hand shake that will send all the media into mass confusion.

Thats my thinking on Reese's role too. BB and he go way back to the Detroit days. At any rate, if Caserio goes away next year , from a cotingency standpoint, you have Reese there to run the FO.

Reese knows a lot of people in and around the league. He may be someone who is also offering up introductions to other GMs, college coaches, agents, etc for Caserio. Maybe hes doing all kinds of cap/no cap cost modeling if the CBA happens/doesn't happen. Wish I knew for sure what he is doing exactly too!

My 18 year old nephew calls Mangini the "NFL's Anakin Skywalker". He went to the Dark Side and didnt hang with Yoda and Obi-Wan long enough and listened to Woody Johnson. LOL.

Based on the article, Josh had two interviews, Denver and Cleveland. Seems like Cleveland made the kind of error in judgment that can set a team back for a decade. Reminds me of the Giants in the late 50's. They had Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry as coordinators, but wound up hiring Allie Sherman as their next head coach.

When one thinks back to the whole Mangini mess, it becomes clear that BB offered to do the same for Mangini if he was willing to stay. However, Eric decided that he'd learned it all and moved on.

Its clear that McDaniels KNEW he wasn't ready before or after 2007 and BB rewarded that decision with further knowledge.

If Mangini is reading that article, he's probably kicking himself..
