Special teams offers hope to some players on Pats’ roster bubble | The Providence Journal

If you were to ask (Kanorris) Davis what position he plays, he wouldn’t hesitate to tell you special teams. Though the former linebacker from Troy State is listed as a safety, it’s possible he’ll never sees a snap in the Patriots’ secondary.

He’s an example of someone trying to follow in Slater’s shoes. After spending most of the 2013 season on the practice squad, Davis was active in Weeks Four and Five before being promoted to the 53-man roster for the last game of the season against Buffalo. The 24-year-old then went on to play in the AFC divisional game against Indianapolis and the AFC Championship Game in Denver.

“Special teams, it’ll get you far. You can make a career out of that,” Davis said. “A lot of people can tell you, you can make a career of it. The only thing about that is, if you’re a special teams guy, then you have to be the best at what you do. The more valuable you are, the more the team is going to need you. If you have no value, if you’re okay or iffy and they can bring somebody in that can do what you do and more, then it won’t help you.

“But if you’re a special teams guy and you’re going hard and you make an impact on the guy like one of the best special teams players I know in Matt Slater — you see that and that gives a lot of guys hope. When somebody says ‘specials teams,’ everyone’s like, ‘Oh, he’s just a special teams player,’ but they just don’t know the role is big as any role on the team.”
