Draft Game #2 3/3/11

Not open for further replies.
So, to sum, the Patriots come out of the draft with:

WR Larry Fitzgerald
QB Max Hall
DE JJ Watt
G Danny Watkins
OLB Brooks Reed
OLB Greg Romeus
G Clint Boling
RB Delone Carter
C Kris O'Dowd
QB Greg McElroy
S Shiloh Keo
RB Alex Green
2012 2nd round pick from Tennessee

That would be a pretty awesome haul even though I don't know much about Max Hall or why we'd want him. ^_^ Let's hope the Pats draft is that good. I'll post up my mock later today.

Very strong draft. I've been on the Jarvis Jenkins bandwagon since day 1 and demand you switch Casey with him.;) Other than that, great job.

Thanks, Pats Missile. I could easily be persuaded off of Casey. I need to do more homework on the mid-tier DEs & DTs.

Here's some morning coffee internet scouting:

This report says Casey's more of a one gapper. Excellent in pass rush, not so good in run defense. He might be able to play a role as a pass rushing specialist in our D-line rotation.

Draft Breakdown — Tale of the Tape: USC DT Jurrell Casey

According to this report Jarvis Jenkins is a 2-down run stuffer who is SATPOA. (Stout At The Point Of Attack)- I'm hoping this acronym catches on. He's 6'4" 305-320 and can play NT or DE. I'd be interested if he's an upgrade at the nose compared to Warren, Brace or Love. He'd doesn't offer much in terms of pass rush so not a 3 down player.

Sideline Scouting - Jarvis Jenkins Scouting Report

Gilchrist had a very solid combine by the way. Very flexible player that has the ability to play cb and safety.

He definitely shined at the combine.

Ty Warren wasn't much of a pass rusher, then burst out about his third season after really buying into the offseason program slimming down a little and getting more explosive off the snap, Jenkins can be that kind of good once Nash & Pepper find all his motivational buttons and help get him pointed in the right direction. As he is now, I have him with a second round grade, and having watched both DL this past season I have Jenkins in my draft above.

17,28,33,60,74,92,123,156,&184

17+28 = 1610
12+44 = 1660

12 = Robert Quinn, DE, NC

33 and 92 to move up to 26

26 = Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

44= Danny Watkins, G, Baylor

60 = DeMarco Murray, RB, Oklahoma

74 = Mark Herzlich, OLB, Boston College

123 = Owen Marecic, FB/TE/LB, Stanford

156 = Greg McElroy, QB, Alabama

184 = Ryan Whalen, WR, Stanford.

My reasoning:

Quinn is going to be a monster at NFL level.
Carimi opposite Vollmer (If we sign Light, then Carimi doesn't get forced to start)
Watkins can start opposite Connolly. If we re-sign Mankins, then he competes with Connolly for the start.
Murray can catch the ball, run the ball and fits nicely into our backfield. If he's gone, I take Todman.
Herzlich could make an inspirational speech each week that would have 45 players kicking the door down to play. And he's still got to get healthy from the cancer.
Marecic fills a need.
McElroy can compete with Hoyer and maybe get on the Practice Squad.
Whalen is a developmental prospect. I think he can be an NFL receiver.

This draft fills the needs and brings in 3-4 possible starters at the opening of the draft as well as Marecic.

WOW, lots of mistakes here, where to start. OK, first you are figuring that Quinn drops out of the top 10, no one sees this happening. Your first trade would have to include pick #123 as well as you are 50 pts short. Your second trade you swapped for #26 where Carimi has #23 value so there goes # 156 and #184(50 pts short again). Getting Quinn, Carimi, Watkins and Murray... very decent but no future picks.

Trade 17+74 = 1170 for 25+37 = 1250 (I think that's close enough)
Trade 33 = 580 for 46+89 =585
Trade 184 = 18.8 for 202+224 = 15.6

25. Mike Pouncey OG
28. Justin Houston OLB
37. Muhammad Wilkerson DL
60. Kendall Hunter RB
89. Ahmad Black SS
92. Jarvis Jenkins DL
123. Greg Romeus OLB
156. Zach Hurd OG
202. Derek Hall OT
224. DeAndre Brown WR

"Close enough" means you are being greedy. The difference of 80 points there is the equivalent of a 4th rd pick or a future 3rd, something teams rarely "give away". If you lose 123 and 156 dont you have to rethink your board?

It depends on the situation.

If a team is desperate enough to trade up, it will. If there's a bidding war, as it were, it might have to.

Point well taken on Jenkins, Box.

What's your take on JJ Watt? I'm concerned that he will not be SATPOA as a 2 gap 3-4 DE.

I was talking about the idea of THIS GAME. Making equal trades is the basis of giving us all the same number of chips. A "free" 4th round pick would be nice on everyone's board, but because we are comparing apples to apples lets not allow the greed, ok? Its so off putting that it makes all this nonsense less fun.

Trades

Trade 17 (950) to Philadelphia for 23 (760) and 85 (165)
Trade 28 (660) to San Francisco for 45 (450) and 76 (210)
Trade 74 for conditional 2012 2nd Round Pick
Trade 92 (132) and 184 (18) to Buffalo for 99 (104) and 130 (42)
Trade 99 (104) to Arizona for 166 and conditional [2012 3rd Round pick

2011 Draft
23 Gabe Carimi Wisconson OT/OG
33 Mohamad Wilkerson Temple DE
45 Brooks Reed Arizona OLB
60 Ben Ijalana Villanova OG/OT
76 Jurrell Casey USC DE
85 Clint Boling Georgia OG/OT
123 Greg Romeus Pitt OLB
130 John Moffit Wisconson OG/C
156 Marcus Gilcreast Clemson CB
166 Shilo Keo Idaho S

plus

2012 2nd Round Pick
2012 3rd Round Pick

I don't know anything about Casey but I would be thrilled if the draft fell like that!

17. Aldon Smith ( don't expect him to drop to 17- Alternate JJ Watt with a rookie salary cap there is no leverage for Condon)
28. Muahaned Wilkerson DT
33. TRADE to WASH for 42 & 105
42. Marcus Cannon OT
60 Sam Acho DE
74 James Carpenter OT
92 Shane Vereen RB
105 Will Rackley OG
123 Ahmad Black S
156 Brandon Fusco OC
184 Shiloh Keo S

I think Mark Herzlich lasts until 7th round and we trade a 2012 6th to take him

Watt needs to improve his technique and get stronger.

When I first saw him at the start of the season I noted he should stay another year and get better. When I saw him mid-season he had improved to the point where I wasn't as concerned he was coming out too soon, he just got better from there. He's still raw, but he apparently has the work ethic and dedication to work at his craft. Given all that, if he's there at #17 I'm cool with him, he's got athleticism to spare, he could even stand up at OLB. I think we'll enjoy seeing what BB & Co. do with him in the mix.

FWIW, they don't have a 2012 6; they traded it for Page.

Exactly, he's a Clay Matthews type. The other 3-4 teams will drool over him while we pick up a bigger guy who plays the run better.

With projections it's always a difficult task. The issues with Reed are that he did not fare all that well vs better competition and he wasn't overly effective as a DL vs the run because he could overpowered. He also doesn't have experience in pass coverage. The first two can be overlooked when studying his game film and the fact he won't be playing 4-3 DE. The other issue seems to be partially answered from his workout as OLB at the combine, he seemed like a very fluid athlete and totally comfortable in the drills.

From his college work we know the following:
  • 3 yr starter;
  • always plays hard, hustles and is super quick off the snap;
  • seems well suited for rush OLB in a 3-4;
  • plays low, is athletic, runs well and is relentless;
  • is not a one trick pony, has a bull and speed rush;
  • good form tackler who delivers the big hits;
  • plays on special teams;
  • smart in the classroom;
  • fiery leader on and off the field, great intangibles.

Seems like he could fit in Pats 3-4.

Most importantly, according to the rules, you have to trade up to 9 to get Quinn, so . . .

Not that this is going to happen, but I am a little giddy over a possible future o-line of:

Vollmer Ijalana Moffitt Boling Carimi

At least one will be drafted by the Pats...:cool:

17. DL JJ Watt
28. DL Muhammad Wilkerson
33. OLB Brooks Reed
60. S Quinton Carter
74. OL Benjamin Ijalana
92. RB Shane Vereen
123. WR Denarius Moore
156. OC Brandon Fusco
184. CB Justin Rogers

I absolutely, totally love this draft...except for Quinton Carter, who I don't like at all. But given that I'd gladly take Ijalana at #60, hard to complain!

4 new starters on the OL in 1 draft...highly unlikely. I did my mock to include 3 of them hoping 2 would make decent starters and a backup. I gotta think that Ornberger was drafted in the 4th and with a couple years of Dante's training I'm rooting for him to replace Koppen in 2012. We shall see.
