Both Barnes & Noble Online (bn.com) and Amazon.com have used book options which may help you acquire books you want to keep at a more budget friendly price. Half.com is another great place to buy used & new books at discounted prices.

The best link is ISBN.nu when you are looking for a book, they have a search engine that hits a number of major book sellers and sets up a comparison table for price, shipping cost, and shipping time. If you want to build a personal library on the cheap I'd start there.
