I think it is because of the Cowboys. Weren't they the most popular sports team in the world?

this whole list is a joke, Boston has to be #1, no questions

NY has to be high, dallas should not be anywhere near top 5, one team does not make you a sports city

and of course the miami and tampa bit

NY only has the Yankees...only real team that wins in that city. And it's baseball where you can buy your rings

Why is Dallas #1...because the mavs won it all last year? lol

There's no way Atlanta, Miami, or Tampa Bay should ever be mentioned in a Best Sport Cities listing, never mind top ten. Ridiculous. A city like Detroit sh!ts all over those three bandwagon cities when it comes to the locals loyalty to their sports teams.

So we have 3 cities that have been known to not be able to sell out playoff games in the top 10? Yeah, this list sucks. Atlanta fans are notoriously awful, I don't think Tampa even knows they have a baseball team, and we all know Miami fans suck from the amount of Pats fans that pack into their stadium every year.

Mavs win the NBA, Rangers win the AL, the Cowboys are always popular, and the Stars... well they have a hockey team.

Keep in mind this ranking is strictly for the last twelve months, so prior championships don't count. If I recall correctly Boston has been #1 is these annual Sporting News lists several times in the last few years. If nothing else it may have been a case of 'it's time we give it to somebody else', and with the success of the Mavs in the NBA and the Rangers in MLB, it went to Dallas.

Whenever they do these lists they give a much more detailed explanation in the magazine, so I'll reserve judgement until I read the actual complete article.

Regardless, come on people; there's no shame in being ranked number two on this list.

I don't know jack about Dallas other than flying through there a few times, but I imagine it is because the Texas Rangers were in the World Series in 2010 and look like they may go again this month, the Mavs and Mark Cuban are arguably the marquis franchise in the NBA, the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones are the most valuable sports franchise in the world, the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders make our knees buckle, and the Dallas Stars exist.

The Rangers getting off the schneid under Nolan Ryan and the Mavs winning it all put Dallas right there with Boston, NY, and Philadelphia as cities with consistent big-time stars and winners. Dallas has eclipsed Chicago and LA as a sports city. LA can't even field an NFL team and Chicago hasn't put a consistent winner together since the Bulls and Michael Jordan.

Ownership is the thread in all of this. Love 'em or hate 'em Jerry Jones, Mark Cuban and Nolan Ryan put their franchises first, spend the money and value coaching as a core asset.

Beyond that you have SMU and TCU in town. Dallas has done an excellent job hosting major fights, races, college basketball, soccer, etc.

The Mavs won and the Rangers MIGHT win, apparently that is better than the Bruins winning followed by a Pats MIGHT win.

To be fair the Rangers have to win 8 games, against a possible 3 very beatable teams. NE has to compete with 12 or more over a stretch of a few months, in a one shot playoff system.

Okay, the list is terrible to start with, but I feel compelled to weigh in on #1.

As a New England transplant in DFW, I have to say that the sports fandom here is in fact very mild. The evidence:

    - My family caught a Mavs playoff game for $12 a pop (and we purchased our tickets directly from the box office on the day of the game) en route to their title.

    - This past August, I caught all 4 Sox games in Arlington and nabbed two tickets to each for $0.01 a piece off StubHub. That's right: less than $1 for 8 tickets! And then the ballpark was empty, so we could move to any seat we wanted. (This is a whole one year removed from a World Series appearance.)

    - Jerry has completely priced out the average fan at the JerryDome.
