I know last time they "were doing it to get some confidence back" but now they are doing it again so like is it just more confidence building?

It is not possible for the classiest team in professional sports to run up the score. Mara and Coughlin would never, ever do such a thing.

Let's not do this. We can't defend our guys if we're going to complain about other teams doing the same.

i'm not complaining about it being done. My problem is with the double standard employed by media members. Namely, the Patriots are the only team which does it.

These threads suck badly. There are numerous instances where the media reports on other teams "running up the score" whenever a blow out happens.

I'm not sure I even understand the concept of "running up the score" in sports involving adults.

i know it's a bit of a issue with kids sports, but grown ups?

Offense is out there to score points and eat up the clock.

You can do plenty of things when you are ahead:

    1) Go Vanilla -- and if they still can't stop you, who can really complain. This doesn't mean you run until you have to punt the ball. The goal is to A) keep moving the chains to eat up clock. Eventually, the field is only 100 yards long and the result of moving the chains can be a score

    2) Dial up some other schemes. Call it live game padded practice. This allows the team to work on things during the game and makes defenders have to cover more options on what your offense might do.

    3) Opposing team offenses tend to get more pass oriented. This means the defense has the tactical advantage and may result in the other team having to punt the ball. Unless you are the Pats, in which case, we let you run the length of the field as long as it eats up clock time .

    4) If you don't like it, stop them or as a fan, turn off the tv :)

The Giants hadn't thrown up a '50' since the 1980s, so can we stop with this nonsense?

The media has it ass-backwards. They should cry foul about the losing team stinking up the score. How could the Saints' and Cardinals' defense be so pathetically bad as to give up 52 and 58 points? (Or, in a slightly different context, how could the Dolphins' allow the Pats to run the same basic play again and again and not stop it?) The other team has to run some play. The losing team is embarrassing itself, its fans, its opponent, the NFL and everyone else by allowing the other team - practically forcing them - to score touchdown after touchdown long after the game is out of reach.

Too bad there's no chance Goodell will extend Payton's suspension for a game when we play you next year.

Payton's going to take a hose to that team next year.

Your to kind. We will do our best to beat one of the best teams in history.
I know Brady wants to win that game. We dont have his equal, but with sean's help we might squeak by :)

The Saints and Patriots offenses at their best are just phenomenal offenses. They are so good that they can put up 50 points without breaking a sweat, on a decent defense.

This is different. The Giants and Seahawks were not exactly offensive juggernauts. The Giants had been averaging 26.75 PPG prior to yesterday, or just over half of what they put up against the Saints. Their highest output of the year had been 41 points (twice). They had had 4 games of 36 points or more, so their offense was capable of putting up points when it was in sync, but still. And the Seahawks were averaging 20.2 PPG, with a high of 30 points going into the Arizona game. Not exactly an offense to rival the Saints and Patriots. Those teams put up 50 burgers because of the defensive ineptitude of their opponents as much as because of their own efforts.

For what seems like the millionth (not even sure that's a word) time, it's not possible to "run up the score" in pro sports.
