    Well, here goes nothing. :)

I had two rules in making this--(1) only players on the roster as of 7/1/08 count; (2) I wanted to get all of this year's rookies on the team.

    * = players who I expect will play primarily on ST, at least to start the season.

QB [3]: Brady, Gutierrez, O'Connell [Cassel traded]
    RB [3]: Maroney, Morris, Faulk
    FB [2]: Evans, Eckel*
WR [6]: Moss, Welker, Jackson, Gaffney, Washington, Slater*
TE [3]: Watson, D. Thomas, Spach
OL [9]: Light, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, O'Callaghan; Hochstein, Kaczur, Britt, Yates

DL [6]: Seymour, Wilfork, Warren; Green, L. Smith, Wright
LB [9]: A. Thomas, Bruschi, Hobson, Vrabel; Mayo, Crable, Woods, Alexander*, Ruud*
DB [9]: Harrison, Meriweather, Hobbs, Webster; Sanders, Williams, Wheatley, Wilhite*, Ventrone*

    ST [3]: Gostkowski, Hanson, Paxton

    No Jersey Selected

I think Fernando Bryant will make the team. Besides that, I am in agreement.

looks good. i think Seau will come back that will bump someone, i could see Hochstein getting cut hes played poor even for a backup, maybe Ruud, or one of the bubble CB's.

forgot about bryant he probably makes the squad. Bryant, Webster, Lewis hes probably the best out of those guys.

If you did this before yesterday would Andrews have made the list?

I think he was probably 50-50 in my mind as soon as the Pats drafted Slater. Now, obviously, I think the odds are slim to none.

If Ventrone makes the 53 my head will explode. I also don't think there is anyway Eckle is on the opening day roster unless there is an injury.

    #12 Jersey

Cassel traded to who? - Is there a scenerio you see that shows that a team is desperate enough to pick him up - a guy that has shown squat so far? - No way

If anything O'Connell will be cut but I see the same squad as last year at QB,Maybe Guiterrez gets the nod over Cassel but thats it.

Patrick Cobbs and Brandon Gorin have both been traded for conditional picks in recent years - one never showed anything, the other had shown he was not very good. Even a marginal back up quarterback can net a sixth round draft pick if someone is interested.

I don't know how you can feel Cassell being traded is laughable but that the team's most recent third round pick is more likely to not make the team out of training camp.

The only real objection I have is that Webster makes the team.

Everything else is a matter of special teamers/UDFAs, and I think it's far too early in the summer to argue Redd over Ventrone with any sort of vehemence.

I'm not sure why people think it's laughable Cassell could net a low draft pick. We're talking about a league where scrub QBs who have done nothing are traded for peanuts all the time. OTOMH, Chris Redman, JT O'Sullivan, Cleo Lemon, are guys who had shown nothing and were traded. Perceived QB value is all about upside; and don't underestimate the Patriots mystique and the perceived value of training under Brady.

Anyway, maybe Cassell is just cut, but he is more likely to be traded than O'Connell is of being cut, that is for certain.

    #24 Jersey

All in all not a bad list....especially when you add Bryant in which you said was a mistake.

I think Pollard will probably be there over spach.

Obviously the return of Seau changes this a bit.

No Izzo, you just cut the STs captain just like that.

Glad to see Eckle makes your team. I think he is a very good special teamer and I think he is pretty close to Evans in all areas except recieving and I could see him beating Evans and opening another spot up. But Evans is a good teamer too so maybe it doesn't. This IMO is one of the bigger camp battles as I am not sure we carry 5 backs and neither can take the roles of the true RBs Maroney, Faulk, and Morris. The only way we keep 5 is if both Evans and Eckle win out STs battles with guys in other positions.

I agree that Izzo will not be cut. Also, I believe that Redd has a better shot than Ruud.

Furthermore, I think that Gutierrez will be the one that gets replaced.

    #37 Jersey

Maroney seems to do better with a lead FB, especially at the goalline. Evans has been doing a decent job of it and I'd like to see Eckel blocking for Maroney in live games against starting defenses before declaring him the winner. Especially considering Evan's skill at STs.

Maroney is the lead back and right now, Evans is his binkie. Until that changes, I think Evans stays. Also, FWIW, Evans is a real character guy.

Someone else said it was a mistake, not me. :) Seriously, though, it was a brain freeze on my part, and I'll definitely fix it for next time.

TE3 was one of the last spots I filled mentally, and it was a coin flip among Spach and Pollard (or Stupar, if the coin landed on its side ;) ).

True, but he's not in Foxboro at the moment, so I didn't count him.

As I've said before--I believe the Pats like all of the runners they've got.

Personally, I think that Eckel will win a spot based on ST play; he's definitely got a nose for the ball (e.g., watch the STs in the Colts game, or Kelley Washington's block in the JEST game). Plus, don't forget the guy who recommended Eckel to BB in the first place. . . .

Bryant, Pollard and Izzo will be contributers, replacing Ventrone, Spach and Ruud.
    ===============================================================

OFFENSE (no Eckel, Spach, Neal or Britt)
Overall) There's not too much to argue with except that I stongly prefer one fewer on offense (some would have two).
    1) There is no reason to believe that we will start with 5 RB's. Eckel has shown nothing. He was basically a street free agent brought in when we had an injury.
    2) I have Pollard over Spach.
    3) I think Neal starts on the PUP list, with Mruczkowski on the roster.
    4) I like Ross over Britt.

    DEFENSE (no Ventrone, no Ruud)
OVERALL) Little to argue with, except forgetting Bryant
    5) It's several years since we started with only six DL's. I would keep Santonio Thomas as the #53, same as last year (instead of Eckel).
    6) Izzo will easily beat out Ruud (I know I'm violating your rule).
    7) Bryant instead of Ventrone is an easy choice.

I'm with the consensus revisions: Bryant over Ventrone. Izzo over Ruud.

But, I'm pulling for Spach over Pollard. Youth and potential count for something when you're talking the #3 TE. He's on the roster as much to play ST as TE. Is that a function Pollard is going to fill?

Not really, he was signed to the PS in Week 1, activated for the Dallas game, and then stuck on the roster the rest of the season.

Also, please note that I see him primarily as a ST player, where he has contributed on a play here and there.

Why? What are the odds of that happening? When was the last time BB did not cut or IR a rookie?
