17% of the Pats' 53 man roster (9 players) is devoted to fielding 2-3 players in a Patriots' typical offensive set. (1-2 RBs, 1 TE). Why is this so? Possible explanations could include...Faulk's 1 game suspension and Watson's injury situation...or the Patriots are hoping to get some form of compensation from a trade of a RB...or they will use the surplus of players for roster flexibility (first out the door to shore up other positions)....
.....or....
The Patriots will get back to a power running game. I was always under the impression that the injury to Morris last year changed the offensive philosophy of the Pats. Their lack of depth at the RB position forced them into preservation mode with Maroney, waiting till the last few games to emphasize the running attack. And face it, the running game failed when up against stout defenses. Clearly BB is conscious of preserving Brady's health (I won't touch the Brady health speculation), he is conscious that passing the ball into the endzone is higher risk, and clock management is best attained by making first downs on the ground.
The roster makeup is intriguing, the health of the OLine is concerning, and I have to conclude that the Pats will attempt a more balanced attack this year.

There are only 3 TEs and 4 RBs on the active roster.

They just cut Spach, so I think that only leaves 3 TEs: Watson, Thomas, and Polciask. Unless you're counting DeVree on the PS?

RB was kind of expected for them to carry 5, given that three of them have had recent injury troubles and the other two are situational (Faulk a 3rd down specialist, Evans a FB).

Per Reiss, make that 3 TEs again (though there is also a TE and another RB on the PS). Live long and prosper Mr. Spach.

Things happen quickly...don't they. I guess a RB will be traded/released in the next 30 seconds to make my original speal worthless. At least I got the roster flexibility part right. Spach out, new guy in.

Fun, ain't it? :D

Is it possible to have 4 OL, and use a TE as the 5th? It would only make sense if that TE was a legal receiver. Then use 2 RB set one can go out to receive and the other in to block. Talk about confusing the defense.

You need 5 ineligible receivers on the line of scrimmage, may as well use the best blockers for that.

Picture the Pats with a two RB (Faulk & Jordan), 2 TE (Watson & Thomas), 1 WR (Moss) set, then they shift and send both RBs and one TE out wide after the defense has brought in their run D... :singing:
