45 Man Core Roster

1. Obviously if Mingo doesn't demonstrate Patriot-ness between now and the cuts then of course.

2. Contract, age and greater versatility and because I think Flowers has been better than Long. I'm not saying Long should be cut, just thinking about those on the original list that are potentially at risk of it.

I think that the next thing McClellin shows will be the first, while Long's shown an ability to press the line, but I hear what you're saying.

Long is the only solid, healthy vet on the edge athe the moment plus he was good enough in both games and reportedly in camp.

I thought Long was okay in the games, nothing special. Tonight might change that. Personally I think Flowers should have passed him on the depth chart. Flowers would be my no3 right now behind Sheard and Nink. Of course they might want to keep Sheard/ Flowers at RDE and not switch them to left which would make Long's case stronger.

I did not see (not paying attention) Flowers setting the edge yet, I did see Long.

They need to run. Its not gonna be easy with our RB&OL corpus.

EDIT: Didn't we suffer enough last year?

Maybe the plan is not to run. Between Gronk/Bennet/Derby/JE11/DA/Hogan/white maybe they are always just going to throw it a few feet every time and see which TE or WR can do some running.

SPECIAL TEAMS (4)
Spec (3) - Gostkowski, Allen, Cardova
ST (2) - Slater

That part could use some editing. :)

It also highlights the point that you didn't include King or Kamu or anybody else except Slater and Ebner that is primarily an ST cover guy and likely game-day active. This is OK, since you said that there's a need there, along with other needs at the spots likely going to Freeny, Derby, Martin and Cooper/Karras. But I wanted to mention it anyhow. :)

You called this the Game Day Active List. I did not. If that were the goal, I would have two more special teamers on the 45.

And yes, we separate into three units: Offense, Defense and Special Teams. When discussing Special Teams, sometimes we have a category called "specialists" to avoid using there lines. The other category is simply called "special teams". This is a analogous to the OL where we often have four categories: OT, OG, C and OL.

Curious as to who you think is cuttable on that list. Gaffney, Knighton? Develin in a shocker?

Develin feels safe to me, but Gaffney, Knighton, and even Kline and Bolden wouldn't be major surprises. IMO Kamu Grugier-Hill would be a bigger surprise cut than any of those four.

Can't see Kine getting the chop unless two of Jackson, Mason and Cooper are good to go.

I can't argue with that logic, but the flip side of the same statement is that it labels Kline the 5th best OG on the roster, at best. That's never a terribly secure position.

You called this the Game Day Active List.

No, I didn't. But I do think that if somebody is going to be active on game day, then in particular he has to be on the roster of 53.

Meanwhile, I highlighted a typo for you that you might feel like editing.

Long isn't going anywhere. The coaches love him and he's looked good in camp and preseason. He is going to be a starter. I'ld bet good $ he doesn't get cut.

Where did all the Nink love go?

Add Freeny to the LBs:

I’m told it’s a 2-year extension for #Patriots LB Jonathan Freeny. Core special teams player and an athletic backup for Jamie Collins

I recognize that it's premature, but with all the whining on the various threads about Bellichick the draft maven, 2016 is looking very promising. Jones, Thuney, Brissett, Valentine, Mitchell, KGH, Roberts, Karras, and even Lucien have all shown flashes and have either met or exceeded expectations so far. Then throw in a couple attractive free agents. Again, we're just getting started, but one has to be impressed so far, especially absent a first round pick.

CORE ROSTER (45)
IMHO, we could get upgrades/improvements off the waiver wire, especially at OT or RB. Obviously, the final 8 roster spots will go to those who project to have the most value.

To me, 5 of those spots need to be TE, OL, LB, CB and ST. Given injuries, I also expect us to carry a 5th WR. Karras also seem a likely player to make the roster, of Cooper isn't ready.

I presume that Vollmer, Lewis and Jackson will remain on the PUP list, although they could be put on IR.

OFFENSE (20)
QB (2) - Garapollo, Bissett
WR (4) - Edelman, Amendola, Hogan, Mitchell
RB (4) - Blount, Gaffney, White, Bolden
FB (1) - Develin
TE (2) - Gronkowski, Bennett
OL (7) - Solder, Thuney, Andrews, Kline, Mason, Cannon, Waddle

DEFENSE (21)
DT (4) - Brown, Branch, Knighton, Valentine
EDGE (6) - Long, Ninkovich, Sheard, Flowers, McClellan, Mingo
LB (2) - Hightower, Collins
CB (4) - Butler, Ryan, Jones, Coleman
S (5) - McCourty, Chung, Harmon, Richards, Ebner

SPECIAL TEAMS (4)
Spec (3) - Gostkowski, Allen, Cardona
ST (1) - Slater
I don't think it makes sense to take Amendola off PUP, he has no practice time with Garoppolo and if we leave him on PUP he only out 2 games that Brady plays and then fresh for the stretch run.

Knighton is not making this roster at all forget a core player.

Well God is a Pats fan, and He wasn't a big fan of Defamegate either, so this may be His way of giving a "righteous wedgie" to the Omissioner.

I think they'll be going over the OT cuts with a fine-toothed comb. I also expect they're looking at every OT trade possibility they consider remotely reasonable.

I have to think this is the priority, and that all the personnel moves are pointed in this direction. There is more depth in this defense than any I can recall in 30+ years. And they are doing unexpected stuff to add even more, like Mingo and Freeney and then there's the incredible depth at DT. I've got to think one of the established vets is going to get moved because of all of the young talent that is showing up, and strengthening OT is the goal.

When I think core roster I think less than 45.

Core

QB 1 Brady
OL 7 Solder Thuney Andrews Mason Voller - Key back ups Kline, Cannon
WR 4 Hogan Edelman Mitchell Amendola
TE 2 Gronk Bennett
RB 4 Lewis Gaffney Blount White
FB 1 Develein

Offense - 17

DT 4 - Valentine Brown - Key backup Branch - Pass rush specialist Johnson
DE 4 - Sheard - Rotate - Nink Flowers Long
LB 2 - Collins Hightower
CB 3 - Butler Ryan Jones
S 3 - McCourty Chung Harmon

Defense 15

Then of course core STs... but i won't name that.
