As of now, the Patriots have six wide receivers (Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce, T.J Moe, Kenbrell Thompkins, Mark Harrison) signed for the 2014 season. Their respective cap numbers are $4,543,750, $779,175, $614,250, $497,666, $495,833 and $420,000. I expect the Pats to sign wideouts Sam McGuffie and Greg Orton (current practice squad members) to futures contracts ($420,000 2014 salary) right after the Patriots are finished playing in the playoffs. Danny Amendola has two million of his 2014 salary fully guaranteed practically tying him to the Patriots for the 2014 season. Julian Edelman will be an unrestricted free agent. He had earned a salary of $715,000 in 2013 while maxing out his receptions incentives at $250,000. The question for the 2014 Patriots is how much does Edelman and they think that he is worth. Do the Pats give Edelman a similar contract to Amendola (5 years, $31 million)? Even at less money than Amendola Edelman may be too rich to resign. As part of the new CBA there is a proven performance escalator for draft picks chosen in Round 3 through 7. Josh Boyce is eligible for it in 2016. An eligible player will qualify for the Proven Performance Escalator in his fourth League Year if: (1) he participated in a minimum of 35% of his Club's offensive or defensive plays in any two of his previous three regular seasons; or (2) he participated in a "cumulative average" of at least 35% of his Club's offensive or defensive plays over his previous three regular seasons. Boyce played in about 14% of the offensive snaps in 2013.
Note - I consider Slater a special teams player and will be including him in the special teams breakdown.
