One thought. He has three years left. He knows if he gets cut no one is spending $12m (it does shrink the next two years though). He has $35m for three years roughly. Make it 4 years for $38mm? That slightly more ($1mm) than what you just paid the 33 year old BennettAnd we will never trade for that contract.
It is substantially more likely (even if overall unlikely) that we can sign him after a release than BB throwing out that much money for someone who could very well be past his prime. As long as his contract is above 7-8m APY this is a pipedream.
Extend him a fourth and pro rate the years down, or turn his contract to a bonus (I am not sure how a trade affects this though, or not).
