RIP Muhammad Ali

Really don't know that much about him, he was before my time. Was he an actual good human being out of the ring too?
"Good" human being? No, he was a GREAT human being. And the greatest boxer of all time.

In a golden era where the heavyweight boxing division had its pantheon of greatest fighters, he reigned supreme.

That is simply a myth. He was fighting the "bum of the month" club for most of his career. He was good and fought some memorable fights but to say he fought the greatest is not even close. To say he fought some of the greatest would be accurate.

He was before my time too. Just because he was before your time doesn't mean that you can't study him. ;)

He was a lot better than 'good'.

He fought and beat all the top ranked fighters of his time with the exception of Holmes which was at the end of his career when he was just a shell of himself.

Edit: Fought everyone (some multiple times) except Bobick, Coetzee (1970's), Machen, Johansson, Spencer, Ramos (1960's).

Ali (56-5-0, 37 KO's) was either 1st, 2nd or 3rd all time along with Rocky Marciano (49-0-0, 43 KO's) and Joe Lewis (66-3-0, 52 KO's)

So Frazier and Foreman are bums? The Early to mid 70's had the best competition in the heavyweight division. What period would you say compares? I'm curious.

Note that 19070-1974 would read Ali as well if he hadn't been unjustly stripped of the ability to fight during those years.

He took on all takers. What's more impressive is that he was not allowed to fight in what would have been his most prime years....was older and slower when he returned and he still managed to rise to the top of the heavyweight division. No one fought with more heart......reminds me of Brady's and the Patriot's "60 minutes" mentality. Rest in peace Muhammad.

Who was then?

My favorite Ali memory: crawling into Peso Jimmy's bar in Olongapo PI the morning after another night
of sex, drugs and rock & roll, and then having the pleasure of watching, live on free TV, Ali getting his
ass kicked by the great Larry Holmes.

Larry Holmes....ala scrambled eggs? Kind of like saying Willie Mays career sucked because of his time with the Mets. Although, that Larry Holmes....

I was a sophomore in high school the night Ali beat Liston for the first fight in Miami. My high school was playing in the state basketball tournament and I was on my way back from the game with a buddy in his dad's car. His dad pulled off the road so as to be able to hear the radio broadcast. I just remember the 3 of us yelling and screaming when Liston quit in the 7th round. It was 52 years ago and I remember it as though it happened yesterday. What a moment.

Make a list of the top 20 fighters all time he beat 3-5 of them. Name another great who beat more than that? He lost 5 fights his whole career 3 of his 5 losses he beat the fighter in rematches and the other 2 were his last 2 fights.
I think Ali and Mike Tyson are tied for number 1
Mike Tyson is the best knock out artist but his ten cent brain and Ali's superior defense make make me call Ali the better boxer.
