I was just thinking about the draft and thought it would be hilarious if the Pats just didn't send anybody to man their helmet phones during the first round. Its basically a moot point since Goodell has stolen any ability for the Pats to do anything in the first round, so why bother even showing up? It would be a great FU to the league to have ESPN (We know that the NFL Network wouldn't show it) showing the empty chairs all night.

Exactly, why would they? I suppose a trade up to 29 is possible but I don't see that happening. So they should get some drinks and chill.

If Bill tries the empty chair trick…….Krafty would jet to the draft ASAP, booster seat in tow…..plant a big ole lip kiss on his BFF Roger…..mug for the camera…..slur a few sentences about how he is a conciliator……climb up onto his seat….…and then call Bill every 2 minutes until finally BB unplugs the phone

As long as someone is there to turn in the pick in case something comes up, I don't care if they're in the booth or not. But don't just skip the first round. They didn't think Brown would be there at 29 last year, sometimes players drop and I want them able to pounce if the right deal comes along.

Usually I would say no but as things seem to stand right now i don't see an issue with it.

There will be no one there at the bottom of the first you trade up to get. The only plays I would be willing to trade up to 30 or so to get will all be gone by the first 7 or 8 picks and area really only 5 or 6 players.

After that this is a rather weak draft for the remaining first round. So i really don't see any possibility where one of those players drops in our range.

The only way that happens is if a story comes out a few days before the draft in which someone beat the crap out of their girlfriend or is doing cocaine off strippers in Vegas before games. Either way we either can't draft a guy or we don't want to.

My juvenile fantasy has been they show up as if nothing has been stolen from them, and walk up with a pick in hand when it should have been their turn, and let the press know who that player is, and just make a messy scene out of it.

Of course they should. What if someone really good falls?

Empty seats, place these on table.

I agree, you can't predict what will happen in front of #29 or what could be on the table so you make sure all bases are covered.

Due diligence demands the Pats man the booth. BB always does his due diligence.

Theoretically, could the Pats trade #29 for #32 and a later round pick?

No, they can't. That pick can not be traded. However, if the Pats make some other trade (that does not involve their own first round pick) and end up with a draft pick higher than #29, then that pick would be forfeited and the Pats could pick at #29.

So trading up in the draft is a moot point, and the only way the Pats pick on the first day is if they somehow trade back up into slots 30 or 31.
