Where did Dion Lewis come from?

Well there's an interesting thought. You really think Lewis is a 1st round caliber player, eh?

That definitely compensates for losing next year's draft pick, or at least lessens the sting :)

Lewis is averaging about 95 yards from scrimmage so far, putting him in the top 20 for all skill positions. Just for a frame of reference, 95yards and up is where the top ten backs in the league usually preside. Shady McCoy, Eddie Lacy and Justin Forsett were the three closest comparisons from last seasons, all of whom had monster seasons.

So yeh, I think hes worth a first, whether we used it on him or not.

I wonder how many players never got a chance. Anyone see the football life on Tarell Davis? It was just a comedy of bad luck. If it wasn't for a huge special teams tackle in preseason the coach's probably wouldn't know his name and neither would we.

I still don't know WTF Tarell Davis is?

Any relation to Terrell Davis the RB for the Broncos?

he finally got an opportunity, is healthy AND I feel the Pats system is perfect to showcase the 3rd down back.

Pats utilize the 3rd down receiving back more than most teams. Look at Vereen on the giants...doesnt seem to be having the same season he did with the pats

Woodhead obviously though is still a beast with the chargers. Still feel we should have kept him for that team friendly contract. I always thought he was better than vereen because he offered more of a running threat. but Alas Dion lewis has replaced him perfectly and looks better.

Or perhaps it's safe to say that we're starting to take Gronk for granted? ;)
646 yards receiving and 7 TDs, while also being a monster force as a blocker.

IMO Lewis and Gronk are also two of the most fun players to watch in the whole league. Every time they get the ball in their hands you brace for something special -- Lewis leaving a defender pirouetting behind him, or Gronk galloping down the seam wearing a linebacker like a kilt.
When Gronk gets the ball and it is not in the end zone, I want him to go be like Lloyd. I still remember that tackle from Pollard and I don't want him dragging people. He needs to protect his body. He is too crucial.

That was a great article, but there is one thing I would have liked to have known more about, and that was the process the Pats used in deciding to sign him to a futures contract and Lewis' decision process in choosing the Pats to go to.

It was clear Brady was a big fan even while the rest of us figured that he was just camp fodder. It is hard not to like this kid even beyond his on field production. How can you hate someone who is a Harry Potter fan, and is smart enough to take a deal that works for both the team and himself. It seems he really understands that who he plays for really does effect how well he plays.

The kid has given the Pats over 100 yards of offense in every game he's played. He is a good enough runner that some day I wouldn't mind seeing in how he would do with a FB in the backfield. The kid pushes the pile most of the time. Something Jame White hasn't done once. And like all the 3rd down backs before him, he acts like a perfect Patriot, both on and off the field.

He and Blount are a perfect compliment to each other.

Lombardi had him in cleveland, case closed. There's been tons of undersized running backs who fail in the pros because you need to run it up the gut and stay healthy, so teams look at them with a jaundiced eye.

Is this guy different? Lombardi probably got to know him and Belichick trusts his judgment. Lombardi was a pretty damn good pickup also.

outside of brady, is it safe to say he's been our MVP so far? 570 yards receiving and rushing, 4 TDs.
Gronk might have something to say about that. JE as well. Not to mention Messers Collins and Hightower.

It's probably time to stop calling him a third down back, since he's hardly confined to that role.

Well, there's also this guy called Gronk. And a defender who jumps impressively ...

But most of his injuries have come from other stuff, like blocking or making a diving sideline catch.

Thus far he is better than Faulk, Woodhead or Vereen.

Where Did Dion Lewis Come From?
Good story. Until I read it I hadn't realized how much Lewis is Shady McCoy v2.0.

And those bench and squat numbers seen pretty impressive to me. Squatting a quarter ton may have something to do with his ability to move the pile.

BB did a few things right.
  • He has a role in his offense that uses guys like this really well.
  • He generally explores what guys can do after he acquires them. It's like drafting Brady; if they'd known how good he'd be, they'd have picked him up earlier. But once they do get the guy, they figure it out more reliably than other teams do.
  • And of course there's the general scouting to be one of the few teams seriously evaluating him in the first place.

And from the "Coaching is complicated" department -- Wannstedt clearly has done a bunch of things right as a coach. He's also done a bunch of things wrong. That just goes to show how many different elements there are to coaching.

Dion Lewis has a long ways to go to surpass Kevin Faulk.

He needs a couple more years to be in this company.

By physically he has moves on moves
