$4 million down payment now on the team's optional $10 million 2015 bonus to give them the rights to keep him in 2019;

Mark Daniels @MarkDanielsPJ
Looks like Rob Gronkowski will continue spiking footballs inside Gillette Stadium for the foreseeable future https://shar.es/1tox6s @projo

So am I right in thinking this is a move that's basically saying "Well, we have the cap room, let's pay off 40% of that bonus that's due next year", effectively spending cap space this year to save them cap space next year?

Most teams seem to operate in the opposite fashion - save $ now by pushing $ into the future. I guess that's part of the reason why the Patriots have been so consistently good in the last decade and a half and other teams mostly haven't.

Just makes it more likely that they are to keep him through 2019.

gronk's underpaid.
no way in hell should jimmy graham/julius thomas make more $$$$

I read the article at: http://www.providencejournal.com/article/20150804/SPORTS/150809736/13988?rssfeed=true

Gronkowski’s contract calls for a $10 million bonus at the end of the 2015 season, which would exercise the option to keep him signed through the 2019 season. On Tuesday, the team gave Gronkowski $4 million of that $10 million bonus, which increases his 2015 cap hit. Now, if they pick up his option at the end of the season, it’ll only cost them $6 million and Gronkowski will be signed through 2019.ESPN was the first to report the news, which the Providence Journal subsequently confirmed.So not only do they reward Gronkowski with more money right now, but make it cheaper on the organization to keep him around this offseason. It looks to be a win-win situation.

It's Mark Daniels vs. Miguel on this.

CapSpace=$8,704,988 @patscap
If my guesstimate is correct, then Gronk's cap numbers did not change at all. He just got 4m now rather than in March

Daniels is a very good reporter, but when it comes to accounting, my money's on Miguel.

(That being said, I have no idea. I just like football).

He makes it up with commercials as being a World Champion New England Patriot.

I bet he clears total more than the other two combined.

all true...but i won't be surprised if rosenhaus starts making noise about a pay raise.

Probably were just waiting on a healthy season and off season before picking up 2019.

If he wasn't able be healthy I don't think they would have picked up that year.

That was the tradeoff he made. He got a lot of guaranteed money very early in his career, and in exchange he's going to be underpaid for most of his prime.

Ummm no. It's all about deflated footballs and cameras. Don't bother us with facts like that.

Does this mean that Gronk and Jimmy G are building chemistry.

I kid...

If he stays healthy and performs at a high level, I'm sure the Pats will talk another extension in 2017 or 2018.

That said, GRONK doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who needs to be the highest-paid. I think he recognizes that this is the perfect situation for him.

gronk deserves dez bryant money.

Another ring or two and he'll be making mucho more $$$$ doing commercials......

That's the point that Revis got to in NJ and decided to hold out. Of course the Jets fans complained that he was underpaid, even though he received a few boatloads of money up front.
