Goodell's letter response to the NFLPA...6/2/2015

And goodell also points out that while he was responsible for the punishment, he can hear the appeal because he's not wedded to the conclusions of the Wells report

If he's not wedded to the conclusions of the report, why did he take away the draft picks and issue the suspension?

goodell is a walking contradiction
Lol seriously. "I've decided that you're punished based solely on this report! Oh, you want to appeal? OK, I'll hear your appeal too. Don't worry, I'm not wedded to the conclusions in that report. Except for, you know, the punishment I just handed you."

I feel like Goodell, in a sense, just confirmed "I don't know WTF I'm talking about."

So in other words, Goodell's hatred towards all things Patriots is only going to come back and stab him in the back?

He's opening Pandora's box. the NFLPA has successfully battled him, Brady hired the lawyer that did it and any unfair treatment of Brady, a player, could happen to any player, so the union will fight it.

Goodell can go to hell for all i care.

Actually, he's correct on most of it. (The Vincent/Goodell distinction in particular is bogus, showing nothing worse than that the NFL is guilty of sloppy procedure.)

The arguments for recusal are mainly:
  • This outcome was so ridiculous that there must be bias.
  • NFL folks in general and Goodell in particular have told a variety of lies along the way, casting great doubt on their trustworthiness.
  • Goodell has a lousy track record of having his discipline upheld, so he should recuse himself on grounds of general incompetence.
My hunch is that that's enough to win with in court.

The good thing about goodell is, not only is he stupid, but he keeps putting out these proclamations in writing, thinking he's clever, when really he's just contradicting himself and any good lawyer will be scribbling down every word and making a file.

I'd love to see that prick F. Lee bailey question him. He'd be babbling like a psychiatric patient after about five minutes.

Nice, Goodell's just making the league office agenda more obvious and more clearly malicious by the day. We've known all along that this is going to court, and when it does Goodell's going to get utterly destroyed.

Unfortunately, the courts cannot actually fire him. At the end of the day, he'll slink back to his $44M job on Park Ave. To root out the underlying cause, the NFLPA fight against the corrupt NFL cannot end with the decision in this case.

Sure, but he'll be publicly shamed and his authority will be effectively neutered. Better than nothing.

Any lawyer worth his salt is salivating at the change to depose Goodell or cross examine him. He is NOT an attorney and I'm afraid not that bright despite his position and will get tripped up very easily....

Sorta off-topic FYI - had a meeting with a very experienced prosecutor today, more or less said the information in the Wells Report couldn't support the conclusion. (I know people have heard legal professionals say this already, but never hurts to hear one more).

Goodell's letter clearly indicates there's significant group-think going on at the League office...no ability to step back and take a hard look at oneself (organizationally, or otherwise). Its tone of petulance, contradictory construct, and overall verbosity makes one wonder who's advising them, and how they'll ultimately fare in the real court of law, vs the public one they "court".

Yeah, I don't think reverting to "well it's really about the integrity of the game" over and over again on the stand is going to fly. But would love to see him try, in my dreams some judge would charge him with contempt of court for that nonsense - "If you use the word "integrity" one more time Mr. Goodell, I will have you charged you with..."

Yes, but for me at least it is not just the suspension. What Kraft would not fess up to is that his system is broken. To stain the reputation of one of the greatest players in the history of the game, not to mention one of the league's best draws and a genuinely good guy without solid evidence is beyond the pale. A judge's critique would be a start, but Kraft must be sent a message so clear and strong that he uses whatever influence he has to make sure this sort of thing cannot happen again.

The main reason Goodell should recuse himself is that he's too stupid to hear the appeal. The guy has the IQ of a turnip. Dufus-in-chief has to read the name of the first pick in the draft off of a card, despite knowing who it will be hours in advance. He'd lose a banjo duel to the kid in Deliverance

I don't know why Goodell had to be so wordy, he could have issue the following short but clear message:

I AM SPARTACUS!
