Vollmer may move to LG according to Ben Volin

CHowever, going with that lineup would result in multiple changes when Stork is ready (I'm guessing they're looking at him taking over in a matter of weeks)

This is an interesting wrinkle (real shame that Stork missed so much of TC & preseason). Do you go with your best combo for right now, expecting to blow it all up as soon as Stork seems ready, or lay the groundwork for him to step in to a line with a bit of experience working together? I'll take a stab at a compromise:

LT Solder
LG Devey
C Connolly
RG Cannon
RT Vollmer

I really don't think we lose a lot with Cannon at RT. I think he played at a high level last year, in fact I think he even played better than Solder did at LT. The real problem is Vollmer playing guard with his back issues and the fact that he has never played the position before.

I like the idea of playing Cannon, Vollmer and Solder together however. I do think from what we've seen so far, that Cannon's best position is RT. I don't think that either Vollmer or Cannon would be worse at LG than Klein would be. From what I saw of the Giant game, he still needs some work, especially in the pass protection department.

What makes it even more interesting (to me) is that Connolly is, historically, much worse at LG than at RG, and Cannon hasn't played LG.

Yep, thus Devey at LG in my shot-in-the-dark projection. IMO he has been a pleasant surprise all camp, and seems comfortable on the left side.

I agree that this premise makes Connolly a really attractive option at C. He can start until Stork is ready, and then become a three position backup once the transition is made.

Triumph's attempt a being provocative not withstanding, its kind of a intriguing idea, even though, on the surface, it makes no sense. Like Mack said, the most important aspect of the OL is to get the 5 best OLmen on the field and that would include Volmer. But the fact that he's never play the position (IIRC), even during TC, makes it a long shot.

Typically I do not read your threads or evaluations, but will make an exception this time.

How do you know that Vollmer hasn't played some Guard at TC or practice? Are you at all PATS practices and training camp?

In your expert opinion I know you believe Vollmer is a HOFer but what if Cannon can do a better job at RT?

It could also make Wendell a candidate to be cut AFTER today, if they pick up another cheaper OL before game one.

Actually I WAS at all the practices that the Pats wore pads this TC, and feel free to ignore my posts, I'd considerate an honor. ;) On the other hand I will continue to feel free to comment on any of your posts that are equally as absurd as the one you wrote on Volmer, and agree when you write something that makes sense.

Alex Boone is 6'7" and Kyle Long 6'6". There are plenty of exceptions. But in general, 6'8" is pretty darn tall for at LG, and Vollmer's back history would seem like a red flag in terms of moving to guard.
Not that I think its ever going to happen, but I have to ask. Why is playing G more a problem for the back than T??????

You were not at every single practice.

Stop trying to sound like you were.

I am not a fan of the move. As much as I agree that Cannon is part of the top 3 Lineman of our team, I'd rather have a superb RT and a good LG (Or RG) than a Very good RT and a good/Very Good LG. Let's see how this shapes out, hopefully our interior problems diminish and we don't create another one at the end of the line

Does anyone actually believe that Ben Volin knows what the Patriots talked about in their meetings yesterday? I have no problem with the move if they did opt for it because pass protection inside is a priority and Cannon at RT is fine with me but I just don't think Volin has any inside information. He's a lightweight imo.

Talking out of your ass as always i see. If I remember correctly Ken is retired and lives in the area, he also has no track record of being a liar so how in the hell do you come up with a statement like this. If ken says he was at every practice in pads then I'll take him at his word on it.

Not only that, but he made a thread here for most/all of them. Not exactly hard to fact check, although that's never stopped Triumph when he has an axe to grind.

In terms of his play the only reason to trade Mankins was that his pass protection had diminished and they could be looking to upgrade the interior OL in that regard, if so i can see moving Vollmer inside, especially if they believe Cannon is ready to play the RT position full time.

In all honesty the LG position is still not my biggest concern on the OL, it remains the center position, and keeping Wendell away from it is the biggest priority for me. The sooner Stork can play the better and I'm fine with a host of combinations as long as he's not a part of the starting unit.

Not all practices were open to the public.

I dont care if he lives next to Bob Kraft.

Every NE practice is not open to the public despite your delusions.

To underscore what an idiot Ben Voilin is...

He was on Sirius XM NFL radio on Tuesday to discuss the Mankins trade. He said that the Pats were going to switch to a ground and pounds offense, with a major emphasis on power running...

Yeah, that sounds about right... :)
