Phelps records was a huge achievement. But I know for a fact people weren't crowding up bars, and watching the swim meet across parks all over the country.
That's because it was a single race. People generally aren't going to go to a bar and make a night of it to watch 5 minutes of swimming. But the entire country was paying attention to that race. The question was asked when was the last time the entire country stopped for an Olympic event and I gave an appropriate answer.

The entire country stopped and paid attention to the Women's World Cup in 1999, and as soon as it was over, we all went back to ignoring soccer. I don't know why anyone thinks this year will be any different. No one is this country is going to care the next time Real Madrid plays Barcelona.

Here's a nice little article on the Day of Portugal parade that happened yesterday right before the game. Shows how conflicted most of us Portuguese/Americans were yesterday. ..
Well if you love Portugal so much more than the United States, please feel free to move there at your earliest convenience.

This is very strange. Britain is full of Scots and Welsh living in England who root for Scotland or Wales against England at soccer or rugby. No big deal -- they can still be fully patriotic when it comes to important stuff. It's a game, people, a game ...

It's much different if you grew up in another country and moved. For example,if I moved to japan I will still root for US in everything. So I understand if you were born and raised in Portugal but are now living in the US. However, if you grew up in the US you should probably root for US.

Soccer is an ok sport, but they need to make it more exciting. It's tough for it to compete with our major sports.

I suggest that they make the field a bit smaller, less players. Maybe put an offside line, because the refs are making too many mistakes. Try and curb diving, maybe allow a bit of body contact. If they do that, I think soccer would be much more interesting

It's plenty exciting if you have a team to root for. There's nothing interently interesting about a 2 yard run or an incomplete slant. I've been 100% locked on the U.S.'s two games; but make that between two MLS teams and I wouldn't even have turned them on.

Damn it, I'm way too nervous. I have a bad feeling about the Cameroon game, i hate when Brazil is overconfident

Lol sounds like hockey on grass!

An offside line is offside for dummies. Having offside be based on the defenders results in a lot of the skill and strategy of offense and defense.

compliments for the great game you made against Portugal

you have a real good team - i think you have great chances to continue

Italy tomorrow can continue too the run if they are able to do not loose against Uruguay

tough game...

That was a truly douchebag post, unless you are Native American you are from someplace else, you should stick your xenophobia where the sun doesn't shine.

I will - in 2016. Like soccer, it's something this country enjoys following once every 4 years.

Yep, no way it could ever compete with baseball, which is so fast and exciting, or basketball, where they score every time and it resemble the nurf games we played in the living room where we were all playing above the rim.

American sports aren't more exciting they are just more American.

So thinking that Americans should root for America is "xenophobic"? Can't say I agree there.

I lived my entire life in America, as have my parents and grandparents. So where am I from, if not from America?

Cue posters telling you to go back to Italy.

Your parents.

This country is made up of people from all over the world and they have as much right to root for their country of origin as you do the US, telling them to take a hike is a major league douchebag move.

Telling anyone who they have to cheer for is ignorant, period.

Lol sounds like hockey on grass!

Hockey is awesome imo, football is more interesting for me to follow year round but hockey is more fun to watch.
