Pats Sign LB James Anderson and .......well There Goes My Mark Harrison @ TE Theory......

That could be the problem for Steve Beauharnais vs White or Hull.

I hope Beauharnais sticks; then the 6th LB should be contested between White & Hull (& maybe Cam Gordon, though I'd prefer him on the PS).

I can't see 6 LBs, personally. 4 are set in stone barring injury. I'm still hoping the eventual 5th is not yet on the roster.

You could be right. This could be a very rare year which would include 7 WRs (with Slater), although I'd have a very hard time imagining a total of 27 offensive players myself. To be honest though, I don't really see 7 WRs. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure how often it's even been the norm to keep 6 lately, although that likely had a lot to do with the 2 TE heavy sets.

Yeah, I would have a very difficult time imagining only 23 on defense--especially when I believe that we'll keep at least one more in both the front seven + possibly the secondary.

Of course we'll be able to carry 54 for the first month until Browner returns from suspension, so it's quite possible that someone will be axed once he comes back.

Good observations but at the risk of winning the thread's Debbie Downer Award, but odds are in camp a couple someones will get injured changing the dynamic.

Praying for a year with no IR

Usually BB has to carry a few whose only contribution is ST. But as the overall talent level has increased, we are finding players that can play well in both modes. E.g. T. Wilson, Patrick Chung, La Fell, or James Anderson. There are fewer that are that good, as to be carried or needed, for only their ST abilities, like Slater and/or Ebner, needed to fill out a respectable ST roster. Marginal ST specialists like Hull or White, may be squeezed out, instead.

Isn't it nice to be have your hand forced as to who the Patriots are going to retain on the 53? It's been some time since the Patriots appeared to run this deep.
We have this discussion every year. Every year, it is hard for many to get down to 60. It is hard for almost everyone to get down to 53. The talk is always about our great depth, and the "fact" that our late draft choices and UDFA's shouldn't be cut because they surely will not make it to the Practice Squad. We are homers; we see our players though rose-colored glasses. We are what we are, a team that is consistently one of the top 5 in the league.

Of course, the reality is even lower thn 53 since usually add a couple of players from other teams in the first couple of weeks of the season.

So, since the issue on the team is defense, the solution is to carry only 23 defensive players. How often have we done that under Belichick?
This is what we opened last season with –

QB 2
RB 6
WR 6
TE 4
OL 9
DL 7
LB 6
DL 10
ST 3

This is what I have right now –

QB-Brady-Mallett-Garopollo-3
RB-Ridley-White-Houston-3
3rd down RB-Vereen-1
FB-Develin-1
X WR-Dobson-Thompkins-Slater (ST)-3
Z WR-LaFell-Boyce (KR)-2
H WR-Edelman (PR)-Amendola-2
TE-Gronkowski-Hoomanawanui-Watson-3
LT-Solder-1
LG-Mankins-Kline-2
OC-Connolly-Stork-2
RG-Cannon-Halapio-2
RT-Vollmer-Fleming-2
LE-Ninkovich-Moore-2

RCB-Browner-Arrington-2
SAF-Ryan-Thomas-2
SAF-McCourty-Harmon-Wilson-3
K-Gostkowski-1
P-Allen-1

I have Will Smith, Darius Fleming, and Armond Armstead opening up on PUP.

I have Chung on the roster in place of Browner initially as well; I think he is going to be this seasons Cole (on and off, on and off).

I am starting to question the idea that BB was merely waiting for June 1 to sign Keller or Finley.
I think they like Watson and Jones, both players have unique talents and went undrafted for reasons not pertaining to their football play.

Except at linebacker, this team is deeper than any since 2008. '08 was the year with an unbelievable number of pre-season injuries - Rodney Harrison, Jarvis Green, BJGE, Adalius Thomas, Vrabel, Welker, Stephen Neal, Nick Kaczur, Wendell, Ellis Hobbs, all started out on the PUP list. Welker and Harrison were able to start the season. That team had a terrific opening day secondary until we found out rookies Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite couldn't cover pro receivers.

Others may but I did not believe the Patriots depth was good enough in recent seasons. This season, it looks markedly improved (and I've made it known countless times I'm cautiously optimistic).

When you look at some of the players on the bubble –

Chris Jones
Joe Vellano
Nate Ebner
Tavon Wilson
Pat Chung
Tommy Kelly
Will Smith
Dan Connolly
Ryan Wendell
Kenbrell Thompkins
Brandon Bolden
James Develin
Josh Boyce

We are talking about players who contribute last season a lot or have had good careers on other teams in the past, and many of these players will not make the team.

As I recall, people were insane about how deep they thought the '09 and '10 teams were going to be.

Every year, we "cut" the STer on defense. Every year, Belichick finds a way to keep them. Your roster is fine row now. You are just short 2-4 special teamers (I guess one is Chung).

Not meaning to sound too pessimistic, but I'd find it very hard to believe that they've seen enough from 2 UDFA's in limited practices during OTA's in late May/early June, to choose to pass on veteran TEs such as Finley and Keller.

I'm sure they have their reasons for why either TE has been signed yet, but I personally doubt that it's because they're so insanely high on the likes of Watson and Jones. Just my opinion.

This varies year to year. Some seasons we truly do have more quality players than we can keep and 5-6 of our cuts end up getting picked up and others we are the ones picking up cut players.
I think its not really a good yardstick of depth, as often those last few spots are role players and special teamers. I think the real depth of the team is about 35-45 or 50, and the role players spots fluid.
In other words, if the Bucs 54th player is better than my 53rd I'm not worried about depth per se.

We have often cut better football players than we go on to pick up, because of the role they fill.

Overall, though, you are very correct, and as a fan base we severely overrate the guys on the bottom of our roster.

No love for Beauharnais? Are you interested in a current UFA (e.g.: Terrell Manning, Stevenson Sylvester), or do you have an eye on somebody on another roster who might be eventually cut?

And every year there are injuries on the defense and we watch James Ihedigbo/Sergio Brown/Tracy White/Malcolm Williams and so on lining up to try to stop an NFL offense. Drives me nuts, but BB is the greatest coach in football ...

At times I swear that BB does this deliberately just to **** with us.
I can see the over-worked bastid exhausted, getting respite and entertainment sitting in his office watching the game film of these clowns, chortling like crazy & laughing at how us, the rabid fans, are tearing our receding hairlines out.
