49ers are not expected to pick up the fifth-year option on LB Aldon Smith's contract, per league source.

Could be a possible Talib like situation. He's most certainly going to be suspended and the "feeling" around the league is that he won't play for the 9ers again. He's got a lot to handle as of now before thinking about football but pending his legal matters if he's available at some point next season, a 5th round pick for a top 5 pass rusher in his prime on what is essentially a 1/2 prove it deal could be a great piece to add.

I think there is real concern that Smith is going to be doing time in the next few years, he has a number of pending charges including felony weapons charges.

Rapport does not expect them to cut him –

Aldon Smith's future remains unclear one week after a bizarre airport arrest in Los Angeles.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday on "NFL Total Access" that the 49ers do not plan to cut Smith, who has $3 million in guaranteed salary next season.

That doesn't come close to solving Smith's problems, however. Rapoport said a suspension at the start of the season is likely, per sources involved in the situation, though it's unknown how many games it will last.

Significant legal issues represent another hurdle to getting back on the field. Smith is facing three felony gun charges as well as a DUI charge that led to a rehab stay last year. He'll face those charges in one trial set to begin on April 29. Smith's arrest for the false report of a bomb threat came after the judge in his upcoming trial warned Smith to keep his nose clean.

"It is possible Aldon Smith isn't on the field because he may be in jail," Rapoport said Thursday.

It's a sobering thought for Smith and the entire 49ers organization.

If he is not in jail, I fully expect him to be suspended for the entire 2014 season or indefinitely. How many chances are they gonna give him?

Oh gosh no. He needs to go to long term rehab, not another NFL team.

Yeah, I really don't think this guy's situation is like Talib's. He seems to have some serious problems off the field. No thanks.

Lets see,

Arrested after being found drunk, passed out, in his crashed car accelerting into a tree
Arrested on Felony gun charges with rumors that he was part of a gun selling ring
Arrested for shouting about having a bomb in an airport
Recently spent time in a rehab facility.

I dont think this kid is ever going to play in the NFL again. hes got too many marks against him, and hes just mentally unstable. the fact that he even was able to PLAY last year blows my mind.

He actually sounds like he's mentally ill and is using substances to self-medicate. Very sad...
Unfortunately his ability to play football has provided him with a substantial income to support that lifestyle, and someone will give him another chance, so the help he needs may not be coming as soon as it should.

Another wasted talent. Some of these guys are just so stupid.

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News reported that it’s “very unlikely” the option will be exercised. Earlier on Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN explained that the 49ers are “not expected” to extend the contract from a four-year deal to a five-year deal.

Per a league source with knowledge of the team’s thinking, however, the 49ers still haven’t made a decision. And they don’t have to make a decision until May 3, the deadline for picking up the option.

He's too good to just give up on. I think the 49ers will keep him.

Harbaugh doesn't seem to mind working with projects.

Too much goin on with this guy. And too much has to happen for him to be cleared 100% of all incidents to be ready to go anytime soon. Thought process here Aldon?!

I don't know if its more of a Harbaugh decision or an organizational decision. Either way, yes he's too good to give up on. I think he'll be playing at some point next year and if the Niners decide to cut ties with him he might be an option much like talib was. Again, IF he's playing.

Agreed too much talent to give up on but alot depends on outcome of his incidents and where's his head's at.

Here's my first post on the new forum.

Hi.

He's a playmaker, but a DUI, getting stabbed at a house party, crashing his car while DUI again, marijuana possession, rehab, 3 counts of illegal possession of assault weapon and a bomb hoax to LAX, all in the space of two years. No thanks.
