It Seems Like We have FAs visit, but they don't SIGN.

That's the third visitor that signed elsewhere. ;)

Two years, $5.5m with $1.5m guaranteed for G Shelley Smith in his deal with the Dolphins, source says.

How many free agents from other teams do the patriots usually have signed in the first THREE DAYS (and 2 hours) of free agency?

Last year in the first 3 days, they signed –

- Washington
- Amendola
- Jones
- Wilson
- Talib
- Arrington

Last year we did not win the Super Bowl though so it does not matter what we did.

Browner says hello

(from the sound of it and where he is right now)

Seems like all the people who come visit, don't wind signing, while the rest of the league seem to sign their visitors. The guy from the Cardinals visits, probably re-signed with the Cardinals on the plane ride home. Woodyard visits, and is going on to visit other teams, Brandon Lafell as well. I just find it odd. The guys who signed the first two days Ware, Talib, Decker, all seemed to plan visits and wind up signing after their visits. Maybe we don't know how to play the game, though we got Revis without a visit even needed. Just found it kinda interesting with all of our visitors leaving after their visits.

Never had job interviews, have you?

Ever stop to think that there are numerous reasons?
Maybe the player didn't like the Pats.
Maybe the Pats didn't like the player and didn't offer him a contract.
Maybe the Player was asking for too much money.
Maybe the Pats didn't offer enough.

I hope it is not that one because it would not only odd but concerning.

Why would it be concerning? Do you honestly think that every person get's along with everyone else? If the player didn't like how they did film study or what the Pats typical schedules look like, or whatever.. That's all rolled into the "did not like the Pats" heading.

Maybe Belichick likes to scout potential competition.

It would be concerning to me. If you feel differently that is your right and I take no issue with it.

Apart from the ridiculously stupid concept that an organization (in any industry) should sign everyone who comes in for an interview without even considering the cost, I was wondering if there might be a follow-up from the OP about the 49ers. They just had Edelman and Thurmond in for visits without signing either.

Also worth noting the 49ers and Pats are the only teams to make it to the conference championship games 3 years in a row. But hey, the Jets signed Decker after his visit so they must be onto something...

Add Seattle to the list of teams that can't close FAs after Jared Allen and Henry Melton left town without contracts.

This obviously happens to lots of teams, including top-notch ones. I'll let this die now but hopefully the OP puts some more thought into these types of things in the future.

sometimes the player decides to move on.......sometimes the team says no thanks

And sometimes the team will not sign the player but add him to the shadow roster, if they like what they see.

A lot of the "workouts" we give to potential players that we don't sign, are to fill out the shadow roster.

Unless a player decides during the visit they want to play there or a team meets or exceeds what a player is looking for in a contract they will field all offers from teams that they are visiting and then make a decision.

Of the other people that we know that visited-

Brandon Browner- (Came and never left until the deal was done)
Brandon LaFell- (Visited on Wed., signed Sat.)
Wesley Woodyard (Signed with his #2 team TEN for 4/$16m)
Matt Shaughnessy (Re-signed with ARZ for 2/$4.4m)
Shelley Smith (Signed with MIA 2/$5.5m)
Letroy Guion (Signed with GB 1/$1m)
Kenny Britt (still unsigned)
Jason Avant (still unsigned)
Lance Moore (still unsigned)

Outside of maybe Guion the other three that signed elsewhere were signed for more than what the Pats probably valued them. And after Britt's tweet wouldn't be surprised if he ends up signing with the Pats if some team doesn't overpay for him.

You're right, after 10 year of posting on Patsfans, I should be banished from this messageboard because you disagree with what I wrote.

I dont get it either. I am sure there are players who dont want to come to a franchise that is run this strict, or a franchise that is more professional rather than lose. Or has restrictions on what you can say to the media. Steve Smith probably figured it was not going to be a place for him in the end.

Whatever the reasons, whatever the pats are doing has been successful and has probably helped insure that the right players end up on the team leading to the right chemistry which is just as important as talent. The fact that the wrong players may be turned off by the Pats actually may show how well run the franchise is. Its certainly reflected in the W/L column and the character nucleus of the team.

We've signed LaFell, Revis and Browner... Where is the problem?

The OP opened this prior to any of the signings occurring. Overall I am happy that Belichick took more time this year and was more methodical in his approach, the past few years we have not gotten much out of our UFA signings (from other teams), so Belichick likely recognized that and took a more in-depth approach to signings.
