2014 New England Patriots Mock Draft - Precombine Edition

Round 1 - #29 Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville. 6-2 208 lbs. We've been looking for that Rodney Harrison replacement forever. Here is a guy who will make receivers hear footsteps coming over the middle. As an added plus he can cover too.

Calvin Pryor, FS, Louisville, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Round 2 - #33 Stephon Tuitt, DT, 6-6 312 lbs. Just too much upside to pass up on. Has the positional flexibility to play 3-4 or 4-3. Has a track record of getting after the QB and being active in the run game as well. I think he's a gamble, but he could be the next Wilkerson. And with Wilfork uncertain to return, you need insurance at this position. I feel he is a more explosive player than Nix although obviously not the same level of run-stopper.

Stephon Tuitt, DT, Notre Dame, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Round 2 - #61 Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame 6-6 270 lbs. Big physical tight end. Really good in the blocking game. Hopefully he becomes a threat in the passing game especially in the red zone and turns into an all around starting quality player.

Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Round 3 - #93 Stanley Jean Baptiste, CB, Nebraska, 6-3 215 lbs. A big physical cornerback. I am going full speed with the make the Pats taller, tougher, and more physical in the secondary plan.

Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Round 4 - (#138) Brandon Thomas, OG, Clemson, 6-4 316 lbs. Helped himself at the Senior Bowl and has great length with 34 3/8" arms. The Patriots have been getting overpowered on the interior in recent playoff games. It's time to get stronger at the position. Especially with legendary OL coach Dante gone, we need more talent in the trenches than ever.

Round 6 from Eagles- (#179) Marcus Martin, C, USC, 6-3, 310 lbs. Martin plays with good low leverage and has the right blend of size, quickness, and strength for the pivot. Rang compares him to Alex Mack. If we can get a poor man's Alex Mack this late in the draft, he's worth taking a shot to develop.

Marcus Martin, C, Southern California, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Round 6 - (#186) Brent Urban, DE, Virginia, 6-6 298 lbs. Urban has the core strength to play the 5 technique and the size to play 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT. He's a little raw but he has the athletic potential that makes you think, what if. Certainly a project with upside to take on at this point in the draft. Made some positive buzz for himself at the Senior Bowl.

Brent Urban, DE, Virginia, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Round 6 Comp - (#206) Aaron Lynch, DE, South Florida, 6'5 244 lbs. Has the freak athleticism and the length and size that the Patriots usually covet in their linebackers. He had a down year, but surprisingly decided to come out early. A project with enormous athletic upside.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1825187/aaron-lynch

Round 7 - (#354 or Priority UDFA) - Chandler Jones, WR, San Jose State, 5-9 180 lbs. A natural elusive receiver as well as a kick returner. Chandler Jones main knock is going to be his size and lack of competition. But the guy's size is no different than Welker, Brown, Branch, and countless other smurf Pats receivers of the past. If Edelman leaves we're going to need a versatile kick returner slash wideout. Jones was easily one of the best offensive players in the recent East-West Shrine game and appears to have a squeaky clean character background.

2014 Shrine Game: Monday practice report - CBSSports.com

Chandler Jones - San Jose State - WR - College2pro.com

Summary: 3 of my top 4 picks were on the defensive side of the ball. However I also picked 4 offensive players total including 2 offensive lineman, a tight end, and a wr/kick returner. Overall a balanced draft. If everyone of these picks panned out I would be considered a genius. I'd be happy with hitting on 50% considering I'm making these picks before the NFL Combine. A lot more information will come out after the Combine and Pro days that will shape the upcoming draft. Hopefully I can look back and say, those picks I made weren't half bad. ;-)

Very nicely put together mock. I'm not a safety in the first guy but I'm a fan of the Tuitt pick.

I'm a huge fan of it. That's a mock that I can really sink my teeth into. Very nice, VJC.

Nice mock (probably one of the better ones I've seen), but who's the back-up QB in this scenerio?

Absolutely love, love, love this draft!!!!!!

Really nice mock. Great work. I would like to see a move TE and another big DB day 3 like Jonathan Dowling or Dontae Johnson, but you can't have everything.

If only someone wanted Mallet...
I'd love to have 3 2nd rounds picks :verycool:

Using VJC Patriots Rules and Game and trade for Mallet...

1 Ra'Shede Hagamen DT Minnesota
2 Jace Amaro TE Texas Tech
2 Louchiez Purifoy CB Florida
3 Christian Jones LB Florida State
4 Kareem Martin DE North Carolina
6 Marcus Martin C USC
6 Wesley Johnson OT Vanderbilt
6 (Comp) Aaron Lynch DE USF
7 Dontae Johnson S NC State

The defense would get athletic and more versatile, especially along the front 7. Hagamen, Kareem Martin and Aaron Lynch will do a great job of keeping the current guy's fresh and can all get after the QB. If they add Christian Jones, that is just more versatility and at times can go Jones-Mayo-Collins and have a great group of coverage LBs. Hightower could then rotate in at DE as well and help get after the passer.

Purifoy is my favorite DB in this draft, has the athleticism to man cover speed WRs, has played all four secondary spots, can be a monster on all aspects of special teams including returning kicks. To top it all off, just like Florida was trying to do, you can sprinkle him in on offense every now and again. I also hope Talib resigns and really gives the Pats a ton of option in the secondary.

Was hoping to get more OL help for Brady, but Martin shouldn't be this low and could compete with Wendell (if resigned) right away. Wesley Johnson can play all 5 spots on the OL and would add some needed depth.

While not quite possessing Hernandez speed, I like that Amaro can split out wide in redzone opportunities to help create some mismatches for the offense. Now that the Seahawks and the Legion of Boom are increasing the stock of bigger DBs, it would be nice for Brady to have someone like Amaro who could split out and battle with a Sherman or Maxwell. Even if you don't resign Edelman, which I hope they do, when Gronk gets healthy the Pats could line up Dobson, Gronk, Amaro, Amendola in a two wide/ two-TE set and IMO that would be pretty quality with Brady under center.

Dontae Johnson adds some size to the secondary that everyone has been clamoring for.

I would amend that slightly and say that the off-season focus should be about 50-50 between offense and defense. Depending on which side is addressed more heavily in FA (including re-signings) could skew the emphasis in the draft.

I agree with this, but I would go defense in free agency and offense in the draft if they can make that work. They will have to pay big money to adequately address their offensive needs in free agency but could address defense more cost effectively, and i would rather have the experience to step right in and contribute next season on that side of the ball. I would like to see them go TE/WR/OL early in the draft and try to get their safety and DL help in free agency. Obviously all that changes depending upon who you can get at what prices and what remains to be addressed after free agency but that would be my ideal.

Substitute ASJ fot Amaro and Deone Buchannon for Purifoy and I could buy this. Even better, trade back from 33 and get both Troy Niklas and Richard Rodgers.

I will take this comfortably. Marcus Martin and Lynch in the 6th round will probably need to be revisited though :)

Thanks for the positive critiques guys. Yeah, I imagine on draft day BB will be wheeling and dealing a little bit more, moving back slightly at strategic points to pick up extra picks. That was my no-trade precombine mock.

I'll try to come out with another, including trades after the combine and pro days. There's a lot to be looking forward to the draft! It's fun to play armchair GM, isn't it? Best part of all, even if a few picks don't pan out, I generally always feel smarter than the Jets GM. LOL!

NY Jets Draft Blunders - YouTube

Feel free to get creative with trades if you want guys with the handy dandy trade value chart:
http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php

Some argue that it has become outdated. I feel like its a rough guideline and there are teams out there that still measure the 'fairness' of a trade based on the chart. Though obviously there are exceptions. The Julio Jones mega-trade move up by Atlanta comes to mind.

I have never done a mock before so I would appreciate any feedback. (The #33 is a pipe dream I know)

• #29 - Jace Amaro, TE
• #33 (acquired from Houston for Ryan Mallet and a conditional 2015 draft pick) - Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT
• #62 - Marcus Smith, OLB/DE
• #93 - Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB
• #126 - Brandon Coleman, WR
• Round 6 – Christian Kirksey, LB
• Round 6 – Andre Williams, RB
• Round 6 – Russell Bodine, OG/OC
• Round 7 – Jeremy Deering, SS

It's a good mock. Nice job.

I doubt Stanley Jean-Baptiste will make it out of the 2nd round, but he and Marcus Smith are great fits. If we go TE at 29 I'd personally much rather have ASJ than Amaro; if we got Brandon Coleman then we should definitely make Mark Harrison a move TE.

Christian Kirksey is a great value pick. But I'm afraid Jeremy Deering is a STer only. I'd much rather have Dontae Johnson or Jonathan Dowling.

Finally, I'm guessing the Pats will make the interior OL one of their priorities.

But overall, fine job.

Like Mayo, I'd rather ASJ than Amaro but this is a very good mock. I particularly like the Tuitt and Smith picks: ASJ-Tuitt-Smith is close to my perfect 1-2-3. Only Donald or Kyle Fuller would improve it for me. I also like the Coleman and Williams picks (Coleman's upside is intriguing for a 4th round pick). One other thing I would change would be to swap out SJB for Antone Exum which would allow for a higher upside centre like Martin, Richburg or Swanson.

But those are minor gripes. This is an excellent first effort.

Thank you both for the feedback.

These mock drafts are looking sweet. The only issue I have is assuming Mallett is being traded to Houston for #33.

I would love that trade to happen, but if I was BOB I would sign the soon to be FA Matt Cassel. Cassel has proven to be a solid started under Mcdaniels and Weis. With Andre Johnson, Deandre Hopkins, and Arian Foster, they have plenty of firepower for Cassel to work with. Especially if they added a WR like Emmanuel Sanders to play the slot.

With that offense, and the ability to pair up Clowney with Watt, would make the Texans an instant playoff contender. Plus if BOB really wants Mallett, he could sign him next year without having to give up a high pick.

I hope I am wrong though.

I agree with you. I hope I am wrong as well, but if the Texans came calling and offered their 3rd or 4th round pick, I think I would jump at the opportunity. This is a real deep draft and we have some needs on defense and at tight end and the extra draft pick would be a help. We would obviously have a hole at backup qb, but if cassel would sign at a reasonable number, I would be more than happy. Let's face it, if Brady goes down, we are in trouble anyway, no matter who our backup quarterback is.

If Brady goes down for the season like in 08, then absolutely we are done for the year. But if Brady goes down for say 6 to 8 games, I would love to have Mallett going in there, and possibly winning the majority of those games; thus leaving the pats a chance at a bye week, instead of missing the playoffs.

I would love to sign Cassel, but I think his cap hit will be too high. His high salary could go towards keeping Tommy Kelly, who looked better than Wilfork this past year, or signing another vet defensive player.

Plus I really think Cassel is the smart play for the Texans. He would be a perfect game manager for them. The Texans could then use their draft capital to build up a strong line along the trenches, on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Who knows, maybe Cassel voided his contract because BOB has already contacted him.
