BB rips Welker

This Uncle Meat guy is having a conversation with himself and ignoring what everyone else is saying.

Blocking CBs, pushing them, picking them, rubbing them, etc. All OK. Even when it's illegal and drawing a flag.

What's beyond the pale is running full steam at someone, veering to the side, and throwing a cross body block, before the receiver catches the ball and becomes a ball carrier.

Pretty simple.

It's crazy that a basic simple point made at least 100 times in this thread could be so horribly misunderstood as, "Patriots fans think pick plays are rare."

Only someone with an agenda could get things this horribly wrong.

I'm with Curran on this one. No, Welker's not getting fined. He didn't break any rules. Yes, Belichick has a right to be upset. Welker exploited a huge flaw in the NFL's safety guidelines, namely that a player in coverage is never defenseless. Now after Thomas has the ball (which of course never happened) and Talib becomes someone trying to tackle him rather than a player in coverage, he's protected from high peel-back blocks. As a man in coverage, however, Talib has no protections at all. It's not really just what Welker did (because let's be honest, the NFL doesn't give a crap about player's knees), but it's the fact that Welker could have gone helmet to helmet on Talib and there would have been nothing wrong with the play except that same possible OPI that was never called. Now obviously Welker's not the kind of guy who's intentionally going to go helmet to helmet on Talib, but imagine if Hines Ward were playing and he saw what receivers could get away with. He'd be launching himself every week.

Curran predicts that emphasis will be put on protecting these defenders from illegal hits in these situations (while not making Welker's hit illegal as it wasn't a high it), but then he makes the absolutely correct point that no ref is going to enforce those rules anyway. It's a broken system that Welker either intentionally or inadvertently (it doesn't really matter) just made completely obvious to every player in the NFL.

Now of course nothing's going to happen to Welker from this, but Curran's suggesting that Belichick's rant wasn't really supposed to get Welker in trouble necessarily, but to make it know to the world that the NFL's safety rules were broken. And even the people throwing out terms like crybaby and sour grapes have to admit he did just that.

Uncle Meat also once said that posting here as a Bills fan is like being a Jew in Nazi Germany, so... yeah. He's something.

Oh, I feel the same way.

I don't recall that. You sure about that? When was this?

Would that be wrong?

We do have the option for an ignore list here on the forums. Just drop Uncle Meat on there and you don't have to see his trolling (unless someone quotes him).

To be fair, at full speed there is a very fine line between rubbing someone and colliding with someone. Watching the play at a wider angle I think Welker lowering his shoulder is bracing for an impact he didn't intend until it was too late. The intention there is for Welker to cross between Demaryius and Talib but Talib has a good break and cuts into pursuit quicker than Welker can get through and thus the collision. It looks bad but I no longer believe there was intent there.

Best comment yet, I believe from Troy Brown - if this had been Julian Edelman doing this to Darell Revis, we'd be saying this is good tough defensive football.

Now, fact is it's a dirty play -- there IS no ball-carrier yet. But what kind of ****ies are we? Sometimes you are not the better team on the field on a given day. I didn't see that leading to Denver hanging 48 points on us or something. I saw a lackluster NE offense and -- before and after the loss of Talib -- a serviceable defense.

Complaints, howls, blame, whatever, it is all moot. And because of the Patriots' consistent excellence over the years, the Pats get the "no sympathy" treatment immediately on any such point from the media and any other fanbases.

I think it was a bad non-call. Clearly it pissed off Belichick and he gave the interview he gave.

Beyond that, it's time to take a xanax, play some golf, jam w/Bon Jovi or Steve Tyler for a couple weeks, then start going through what film's available on prospects.

Sirrously.

Except Edelman is on offense................

How exactly is that good "defensive" football?

Seriously, outside of proving you are as stupid as Troy Brown, what's your point?

Dont you be dissing my boy now.

Troy might be wrong/too generous in giving Welker the benefit of the doubt but hes in no way stupid.

EDIT: And in essence what Troy said is true. Go read the Bronco forums. Theres not a Bronco fan that doesnt love what Welker did.

Why wouldn't Denver fans love it?

The single most important player that shut down your offense in November was forced out of the game by that "pick"?

Coincident?

The reality is the game plan was based on AT on Thomas. Take that and the dynamic changes......quite the tempting target.

Intent is irrelevant. It's reckless. You're also missing the fact that Welker veered into him. You can easily see Welker dive left.

Troy Brown didn't say that. Buckley did.

It's safe to say few drunk drivers set out on the highway with intent to cause accidents.

Exactly.........

Re: Wish BB was this vocal when Spygate came out....

Withthe exception of 2013, all those teams were defensive teams. Meaning, they got to the SB based on what their defenses were able to do. True, they had to put up more points than the other team, but the team was better at defense.

Also true, is that the refs let more things go in these types of games and that favors the defense (almost reverses the rules that favors offenses during the regular season). so, a good defensive team can actually play better if they are smart enough to play to the refs.

Now having said that, our offense did put up points to go ahead and the defenses couldn't maintain the lead (in the SB games). Still, I would have hoped our offenses could have put up more points to not leave it to our defense, but who doesn't want to win by multiple scores and coast for the 4th quarter. it sure made for compelling football and the Patriots are a big draw nationwide.

All of that is true...and the Pats knew this BEFORE kickoff. Brady with a smug smirk when he was challenged on media day about Plaxico saying the Pats would not score more than 17 points comes to mind.
I know this: if Peyton had QB'd all of these losses, we'd call him a choker. We'd say, "Yep, you can have your records...TB12 just wins, Baby." Well, TB got his records and got his MVP he just hasn't won a huge game where is was not a overwhelming favorite since the Eagles 2/6/05 (yes, I know the date because I still get comments from Mrs. PittPatriot I didn't take her out on our anniversary:rolleyes:).

We had the best offense of all time in 07, and we had great offenses from 2010 to last year. I'm not sure why you assert that those teams were defensive teams.

Even this year's team our offense scored the 3rd most points. We haven't been a defensive team since 06.

Whut?

2007 was the highest scoring offense in history (until this year's Bronco team).

2010 team lead the league in scoring.

2011 team was third in the league in scoring and had a putrid pass defense.

2012 team lead the league in scoring.

2013 team was third in the league in scoring.

He means the teams that beat us- Giants, Jets, Ravens...

Our offense came up short against teams that got to where they were by making everyone's offense come up short.

Until Denver.

Yep. That was a terrible press conference by Brady.

Osi (I think it was him) said Tuck and a couple of his other defensive teammates on the Giants were "seeing red" when they saw a clip of Brady scoffing at the 17 points prediction.

Brady did give the right answer - "They're a great team and they should be confident", but it was too late. That was an un-Patriot-like thing to do and who knows - maybe it fired up the Giants enough to put them over the top.
