As of now, the Patriots have six wide receivers (Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce, T.J Moe, Kenbrell Thompkins, Mark Harrison) signed for the 2014 season. Their respective cap numbers are $4,543,750, $779,175, $614,250, $497,666, $495,833 and $420,000. I expect the Pats to sign wideouts Sam McGuffie and Greg Orton (current practice squad members) to futures contracts ($420,000 2014 salary) right after the Patriots are finished playing in the playoffs. Danny Amendola has two million of his 2014 salary fully guaranteed practically tying him to the Patriots for the 2014 season. Julian Edelman will be an unrestricted free agent. He had earned a salary of $715,000 in 2013 while maxing out his receptions incentives at $250,000. The question for the 2014 Patriots is how much does Edelman and they think that he is worth. Do the Pats give Edelman a similar contract to Amendola (5 years, $31 million)? Even at less money than Amendola Edelman may be too rich to resign. As part of the new CBA there is a proven performance escalator for draft picks chosen in Round 3 through 7. Josh Boyce is eligible for it in 2016. An eligible player will qualify for the Proven Performance Escalator in his fourth League Year if: (1) he participated in a minimum of 35% of his Club's offensive or defensive plays in any two of his previous three regular seasons; or (2) he participated in a "cumulative average" of at least 35% of his Club's offensive or defensive plays over his previous three regular seasons. Boyce played in about 14% of the offensive snaps in 2013.

Note - I consider Slater a special teams player and will be including him in the special teams breakdown.

Reposting these posts as they may be of more interest now.

Thanks..I don't expect Amendola back next year.

They would lose cap room by cutting him. There's no advantage to cutting him at least until 2015.

Even at less money than Amendola Edelman may be too rich to resign.

If Amendola's contract gets in the way of re-signing Edelman, I think we all know who's more important to the team.

Memo to our front office: Please go after Boldin & Decker if they ever get out in FA. Hope rookie class will improve next year.

This is what we have. The question will be how much Edelman is worth. Keeping Edelman would be in addition to the top three.

Dobson, Amendola, Thompkins

Boyce (Harrison, Moe, McGuffie, Orton)

Amendola - I'll tell yeah, can we please keep McDaniel's far away from any talent evaluation. His track record at this point between referring retreads from his tenures away from the Pats to his draft picks while with the Broncos(Tebow) leave a lot to be desired. Couple that with the multitude of stinker game plans in big games over his OC run with the Pats and you have to wonder if this guy really has the intuition/eye that it requires to be a HC.

But cutting Amendola will cost the team more even before they go to sign Edelman.

We need a big sophomore year from Dobson. He's the one true burner on this team.

Don't you think it's ironic that in that same Tebow draft, McDaniels also chose Demaryious Thomas, Eric Decker, and Zane Beadles and JD Walton who protected Manning all day? Knowshon Moreno was also a McDaniels pick.

Take away McDaniels picks from the Broncos (take away Thomas, Decker, Beadles, Walton and Moreno), do they beat the Patriots?

If Mark Harrison has his head screwed on straight he helps fix this problem. He is another Dobson just bigger and quicker :

Dobson

Height: 6026
Weight: 210
40 Yrd Dash: 4.37
20 Yrd Dash: 2.60
10 Yrd Dash: 1.51
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 16
Vertical Jump: 35
Broad Jump: 10'01"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.33
3-Cone Drill: 7.19

Harrison

Height: 6027
Weight: 231
40 Yrd Dash: 4.37
20 Yrd Dash: 2.58
10 Yrd Dash: 1.59
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 17
Vertical Jump: 38 1/2
Broad Jump: 10'09"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.33
3-Cone Drill: 6.99

Next year I expect :

Dobson - clearly flashed upside
Edelman - can't afford not to re-sign him
Amendola - cheaper to keep than cut
Boyce - disappointment but flashed athleticism that can't be taught.

That's four.

Then a battle for #5 between KT, Harrison and maybe a draft pick depending on what they think of those two.

In the perfect world, Dobson, Edelman, Amendola, Boyce, Harrison would be sweet but I have no clue what they think long term about Harrison and KT.

You're setting us up for this year's WR pinkie: Harrison. Why no include last year's on your list of hopefuls: Moe?

Moe interests me too. Two problems with him :

1) Coming off torn Achilles, that could be a rough return for a WR who depends on quickness unlike Crabtree, although Crabtree's return gives hope.

2) I can easily put Harrison on the roster as we need another big, outside WR. I can't get Moe on the roster as easily as I can't see Edelman (too good a season) or Amendola (contract) being gone and all three of them seems unlikely.

However just for fun :

Amendola

Height: 5104
Weight: 183
40 Yrd Dash: 4.68
20 Yrd Dash: 2.65
10 Yrd Dash: 1.51
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 13
Vertical Jump: 27 1/2
Broad Jump: 08'07"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.25
3-Cone Drill: 6.81

Moe

Height: 5114
Weight: 204
40 Yrd Dash: 4.68
20 Yrd Dash: 2.61
10 Yrd Dash: 1.60
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 26
Vertical Jump: 36
Broad Jump: 10'00"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 3.96
3-Cone Drill: 6.53

I start with Dobson and Amendola as essentially being locks, and I figure the rest will work itself out. Boyce didn't really show anything to make me think he's untouchable. Collie didn't get his head scrambled again, but he also only tallied 6 receptions. Then there's J.E. the F.A..

Having 3 spots to fill, potentially, means the position could end up costing a bit more money. Time will tell.

I agree that Dobson and Amendola are locks. I agree that the rest will work itself out.

It seems likely that Thompkins will be in the hunt for a roster spot. I expect us to re-sign Collie, for camp competition, if nothing else. Boyce will be back. I agree that these three aren't untouchable. And then there are Harrison and Moe, with hopes.

I expect one significant free agent signing who could be Edelman. I could also see Belichick not signing anyone except the usual camp competition.

I'm wondering if the team will try to rework Amendola's contract to utilize some dollars to keep JE

Outside of the last two drives of the buffalo game by Amendola, did you see anything, in any Patriots wide receiver not named Edelman, that really made you think they were legit? I think we need to start there, albeit with the understanding that Dobson (high pick) and Amendola (dead money) don't really need to worry about scrutiny when it comes to making the team and affecting the cap.

Some people have floated the idea of Kenny Britt, for example, so I'm curious as to your take on the receivers already on the squad, because having to go outside the squad for a legit WR will probably mean a fairly hefty cap hit.
