How do the sox beat out the pats in vanity plates?

Um, then why does a Sox-Yankees in a pennant race in August have lesser ratings than a Patriots PRE-SEASON game?

Baseball has 162 games so fans don't feel bad about missing a few to watch the (relatively) few football games there are

Most Sox games are on NESN which is not basic cable in man packages and Pats pre-season games are broadcast on basic cable.

Furthermore, while Boston is still a baseball-centric town, it's important to note the different places each franchise is in terms of their winning cycle. Once Belichick and Brady ride off into the sunset in 2-4 years, I bet the Pats pre-season ratings will drop quite sharply. Especially if the Red Sox can continue their rebuild.

For as much as people want to paint Boston as a "baseball" or "football" town, it's a "winning" town. The Sox have been bad and unlikeable for a few years now and the Patriots have been full of story lines and post-season "almosts" (which leaves fans rabidly awaiting the next season).

Vanity plates are nice, just too expensive.

In my case I opted to legally change my name to SJ-926

Voila! I've got a license plate with my name on it with no excessive registration charges!

OT: How do the sox beat out the pats in vanity plates?

I went though the pain of reading the article. At no point does it say that the "sox beat out the pats".

The key I think is the Jimmy Fund donation which is a very popular charity in the boston area.

I do think the "sox beat out the pats" in pink hats sold.

Excellent thought regarding the Jimmy Fund. My 11 year old nephew is currently playing baseball in a post season league, the championship winner is the team that raises the most money in Jimmy Fund donations.

I'm not sure how I feel about that concept of winning, but at least it's for a good cause.

No. Surveys have indicated otherwise.

Actually, it's a close second to watching grass grow.

I was relying on word of mouth, so I'm glad to hear surveys indicate otherwise.

With you on the grass growing brother, it's so boring. Especially with the time it takes pitchers now a days.

Agreed. Football, Basketball ,Euro soccer for me.

It was really interesting to see the top 3 franchises in value all being soccer teams. Makes you wonder why it's not more popular in the US? I'd be lying if I told you I knew anything at all about it.

I always wondered why the Patriots did not link to the Jimmy Fund??

Not real aware what the Kraft Foundation actually does....

http://www.thekraftgroup.com/charity_philanthropy/

http://www.jimmyfund.org/

The jimmy fund is a non profit public sector organization, they are permitted to generate revenues in order to fund their business operations, this means they likely have a marketing agreement or some other type of contract in place with the Red Sox which includes a non compete clause.

Kraft's foundation is as a charitable organization, which can not generate revenues that can be used for business operations.

Did you know you can legally make "SJ-926" without legal fees? Register to vote as John "SJ-926" Smith. It is free.

Voila, no court appearances explaining to the judge about vanity plates.

I think the late George Carlin says it all.

In Baseball, if it rains, we don’t come out to play. “I can’t come out to play. It’s raining out.” Baseball has a 7th inning stretch. Football has the two minute warning. Baseball has no time limit. We don’t know when it’s gonna end. We might have extra innings.

Football is rigidly timed and it will end even if we have to go to sudden death. In Baseball, during the game in the stands, there is kind of a picnic feeling. Emotions may run high or low, but there’s not that much unpleasantness. In Football, in the stands, during the game you can be sure that at least 27 times you are perfectly capable of taking the life of a fellow human being, preferably a stranger.

And finally the objectives of the two games are totally different. In Football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general. To be on target with his aerial assault riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing his aerial assault with a sustained ground attack, which punches holes in the forward wall of the enemies’ defensive line. (applause) In Baseball, the object is to go home, and to be safe. I hope I’ll be safe at home, safe at home.

Baseball is slipping into anachronism. Even croquet and lawn darts are gaining ground.

Someone say croquet? THIS typa croquet? (only up thru Trick Of The Tail & Wind & Wuthering tho. Well, extend it all the way to Seconds Out for the perfect bookend live document.)

...

I agree about it being a "winning team" town, but We are not talking about games in May. We are talking when "the marathon" becomes a sprint at the end. Versus games that, by definition, do not count

Currently I see Boston as a
1 Bruins
2 Pats
3 Red Sox
4 Celtics
...town. The Bruins have come back and don't appear to be leaving anytime soon. They have a number of players with charisma and fan appeal, a couple of heated rivalries... they're doing very well. Chara is a star in this city and guys like Lucic and Seguin are growing in popularity.

The Pats are holding on... for now. If they go 8-8 (I don't think they will, but if they did) this town (Boston) will turn it's back with the exception of the true Pats fans. Many Pats fans complain about anything but a 4th Lombardi, and 90% of the media love to hate them. That's a tough position to be in. They are victims of their own success, even if the last Superbowl win was about 8 years ago. In 5 months they've lost Welker, Hernandez (two of the lady's favorites) plus fan faves like Woodhead. That could hurt them on the field, but currently does hurt them in publicity and casual fan appeal. See a lot of people rushing out for an Armstead or Ebner jersey right now?

The Sox were #4 but managed to put a team together with few big names and some old fan favorites. And they're winning. The Celtics are now in rebuilding mode and many people in this day and age don't wait around for teams to rebuild.

Should the Pats win it all and the Bruins lose out in the first round of the playoffs, it will switch over again. That's the way it is here. All of Boston's teams have an edge (usually), and thankfully at least 1 or 2 at any time seem to be pretty competitive. Boston fans and media ride the hot hand.

Baseball appeals to a broader spectrum of people ... that's all.

bet more grandmothers watch the Sox than the Patriots ... more kids play baseball than football also.

But if anyone says watching baseball is better than watching football - I say they are full of crap.
