* Ye Olde 2013 Mock Draft Thread!! *

if we trade cleveland mallett and vollmer i think we could get the 6 and a 2014 3rd

1. Vollmer's not under contract, so we can't trade him. We'd have to tag him and trade him, or sign him and trade him.

2. Cleveland has a top LT in Joe Thomas, and a very solid developing RT in Mitchell Schwartz, who they took #36 overall last year. I'm not sure why they would want to trade for a high priced tackle.

If you want to trade Mallett and Vollmer (after tag) together, then the Cards are the team to target.

someone suggested that trade i was just saying what we could get for it

This is a pretty good point actually.

If only they coveted Mallet a bit.

If we can keep Welker and Talib, and add those top 2 picks. That's not shabby. Add an ol like Brian Winters and let's roll the Raisins in the season opener down in Baltimore.

If Walter has us drafting a qb, they must be assuming we trade Mallett. If we deal him and can get a safety in the 2nd. I'd be pretty damn happy. Only think lacking would be a de, but if Armstead can play that spot we're covered there too. A third CB and an OLB who can defend the pass would be my two main concerns.

yeah id rather have winters in the 3rd than bray i think im happy with nink and armstead as the lde for now because next year we can get stephon tuitt or maybe clowney if we position ourselves for him. I think kawann short would be great cus he's a gret pass rushing DT and would compliment Wilfork nicely and Patton is my binky so im very happy with that

Outside of some sort of horrific injury happening to him and hurting his draft stock, I don't see any way in which the Pats touch Clowney with a ten foot pole.

I don't like the selection of Short there. I'll agree that DT is a possible need, but not in round one. I want a safety there. I'm a fan of WR at the second pick, but I'm still not sure how I feel about Patton. I have to watch more film of him. As for Bray? best describes my feelings on him. Bray, to me, seemed like more of a product of his talented receivers and showed way too many flashes of being an absolute gunslinger.

Even this might not be enough:

oh i agree im just saying if we traded for a 1st round pick of a questionable team and we get lucky and get a top 3 pick when teams might pick johnny football or teddy bridgewater as possible franchise quarterbacks instead of a great DE

Uhh...Don't you mean "I don't see any way in which the Pats come within ten miles'f'm." ;)

The "ten foot pole" business implies that we are emphatically averse to acquiring the the lad's services.

All right, here's my 2nd attempt after the senior bowl. I tried to find guys that could be day1 starters for us.

1-Quinton Patton- he is a pure effort receiver with pretty good quickness. He reminds me of Michael Crabtree. I envision him doing everything branch does but better. Yes, this is an overdraft, but I can't take the risk of waiting in the second. It was very tempting to go with hunter, etc but this just felt safer.

2-Bacarri Rambo-will replace gregory. I feel he covers the deep ball better than any other safety in the draft. He doesn't play the run as aggressively as I would like but placing him on the the side of mccourty will turn the field into a no fly zone.

3-Sean Porter-longtime binky. He is without a doubt my favorite coverage lb, but he also offers a decent speed rush off the edge.

Trade both 7s for an early 6 and get Chris Harper-Big receiver that really caught my eye in the senior bowl. For a late pick, he will have a decent shot to make the roster.

I think our whole draft depends on who we sign right now i wouldnt be surprised if we got desmond bryant from oakland hes intelligent (went to harvard), young and had a breakout season. If we get him I still wouldnt mind getting a dt in the first but it definitely lessens that need. Then maybe we sign Hartline i would still go Patton in the 2nd but it could still cause changes and then we could sign someone like kenny philips for s which then we wouldnt even need to draft a safety. Those are my top 3 FA targets and i think that could help a lot if we get desmond bryant i think a trade down or someone like Johnathan Banks would be great (replacing Talib) all in all we have a lot of possibilities through FA and the draft and a lot of interesting possibilities with vollmer, talib and welker all FA's

Hey Mayo, who ya picking in this scenario? Rang and Brugler have new mocks out. 3 qb's going in first 8 picks. Lord, I hope that happens. Will drop some good players to us. And, increase demand for a qb to trade down. Rang has us taking Matt Elam whom I like. But, not as much as some other guys left on his board. Brugler has us picking Tavon Austin. I thought we want a bigger WR if Welker leaves?

With Rang's board we could have Dion Jordan, Jon Cooper or Jesse Williams. Could you make a decision in 15 minutes? Matt Glennon is on his board so someone will prob want to trade up and we'll deal down.

I'm taking a bit of a sabbatical from posting for a while to recharge my batteries before the draft, but didn't want to be discourteous and ignore a direct request.

I agree with Ewan that it depends on what we do in FA, and I also agree with him about Desmond Bryant, who is actually my top FA target for the Pats. In fact, I've gone "all in" for Bryant the way I was all in for the Pats acquiring Talib and for the Pats signing Armond Armstead. I could go into detail as to why, but to be brief, I think Bryant would be a force in the middle next to Wilfork, with the ability to be a 3 down lineman who can stop the rush, clog the passing lanes, and generate inside pressure. He had 4 sacks, 11 hits and 20 hurries in 350 pass rushes in 8 starts last year. I think he's just hitting his prime. I like him better than any of the draft optons, because I think he combines some of the disruptiveness of guys like Sheldon Richardson and Sharrif Floyd without being just a penetrator. He's also a smart, tough kid who is a hard worker. I see Armond Armstead more as a LDE who can move inside on passing downs, where Armstead and Bryant would be a terror. A base DL of Armstead-Wilfork-Bryant-Jones would be able to stop the run, clog the passing lanes and generate pressure with a 4 man rush. Armstead could move inside on sub packages with Ninkovich moving to LDE. Ninkovich could allso see time at OLB.

I like the idea of picking up Kenny Phillips, but cap space will be tight. I actually think that Nate Ebner has the physical tools to develop as a stud SS opposite Devin McCourty. I'd love the Pats to pick up George Wilson to tutor him. Wilson was a UDFA WR who converted to SS very successfully. He'd be an immediate upgrade over Steve Gregory in terms of physicality, and a pretty cheap pick up. Ebner was very raw last year, but the secondary was also in flux. After a year to learn the position, and with a more stable secondary, and with someone to tutor him, I think he could develop fairly quickly - maybe not as an immediate starter in 2013, but perhaps over the course of the year. He has elite athleticism, and the rare combination of brute physicality and elite movement skills that you seldom see. Only Kenny Vaccaro has that skill set of the current set of draft prospects.

Getting to your question, if the Pats did sign Desmond Bryant, I'd go OL in round 1. The guy I would really like to target is DJ Fluker, who is my 4th "all in" guy. I think he'd be a brute on the right side of the line at either RG or RT. Put him next to Vollmer or Cannon and the Pats would have a dominant physical right side of the line. Ideally, we'd re-sign Vollmer and use the 3 of them in a rotation, and just overpower teams. Fluker is available at 29 in Bruger's mock, but not in Rang's. In Rang's, I'd go with Jonathan Cooper, who is more athletic but less powerful. He'd probably play LG, with Logan Mankins moving to RG, or center.

Either way, by signing Bryant (in addition to Armstead) and drafting Fluker or Cooper the Pats would significantly upgrade both of their lines. I'm a strong proponent of building around the trenches.

That's all for now. I probably won't be posting for a while.

No prob Mayo. Thanks for your responses. Hard to pass on Cooper. Can't go wrong with a good lineman. Just don't want to reach for one who plugs a hole. Chat closer to the draft. I'll give manxman grief for a couple of months:)

Im thinking for us we either go
1. Banks
2. Patton
3. Cyprien

or trade back
2.a Brown
2.b Patton
3.a Cyprien
3.b trade back for 4 and 5
4 chris harper
5. mathieu

Drafting Banks, do you think that is with signing Talib or a different corner to be our #1? or is Banks good enough to be our #1 CB next year. I don't know too much about his play. it just appears to me that even if the Pats draft a CB in the first, we will continue to have holes in our secondary next year (if we don't ALSO address the position in FA).

I'd like to say I'm confident in Dennard, but the 2nd year for DB's on the Pats defence isn't usually their best...

Does anyone have any thoughts on David Bass, DE from Missouri Western State. 6'4" 268 33 5/8 arms and put up great numbers 56 TFL, 39.5 sacks.

Don't know anything other than that about him, his numbers just popped out at me

There was a poster here who was pimping David Bass to no end. Not sure who. I've read that he's a great athlete who can drop and run sideline to sideline like a linebacker or safety, and would be best used in a hybrid edge role like Ninkovich or one of my all time favorite non-Pats, Julian Peterson.
