Ryan Kerrigan at #17

Kerrigan - 17
JJ Watts - 32
Gabe Carimi - 33

That would make me happy.

On SI.com recently, they had us taking JJ Watts with the 17th pick. What do people think about him? I'm not sure he's big enough to be a DE in the Pats 3-4.

With Houston hiring Wade Phillips as D-Coord I don't see Kerrigan getting past #11 now since they will have to rebuild their D into a 3-4 and there is not a NT worth taking that high but they also need OLB's.

He's very high on my list of possible 34Ends. He is listed at 6'6 292 right now. What is big enough? If that size is accurate I would say yes. More than likely he puts on a few lbs for the combine to hit that magic 300 mark.

He is also a JR and I haven't seen that he has declared yet.

Heck I could put on 8 lbs this weekend drinking beer and watching the games.

I see Mario Williams playing olb in a 3-4. Their secondary may have been the worst I've ever seen. I see a cb going there like Amakumara.

He declared in the last hour or so.

SSDD

PS -- Not the kind of weight a NFL prospect wants to put on!

First let me say that I love the idea of drafting Kerrigan.

Kerrigan grades out very high as both a pass rush demon and run stuffer.

He has the size to set the edge and anchor against most TE's in the league. He is very active with his hands which should allow him to win the hand slapping contest against most OT's not named Long, Thomas or Ferguson.

He has dropped into coverage some and while it is not often a pretty sight, with proper coaching his technique should improve much like what Cunningham is going through now.

My problem with Kerrigan at #17 is that BB drafts based on value. Is Kerrigan, a potential 3 down LBer, value at number 17?

While most of us that watch Patriots football and see opposing QB's with 5 plus seconds to throw the football would say yes, but I don't think BB sees it that way.

For #17 my first preferance is Dareus, but I think he is off the board by then. And given how some of the 4-3 teams in front of us need a DE pass rusher, I think Kerrigan is beginning to rise up draft boards much like Chris Long did a few years ago.

What down would you take him off the field.....you say he is pass rush demon and run stuffer?

I like Kerrigan at #17 but I just don't think he's going to be there.

If we do pick him @ 17 it most likely means he tested well at the combine and showed he has the ability to drop back and has added some moves to his pass rushing repertoire.

Mario Williams playing OLB  The guy is 6'6 300lbs he is an absolute stud as a 5T DE. Why would he play OLB.

They have a pretty good trio of young OLBs with Barwin, Anderson and Cushing.

I wasn't too impressed with his performance on Saturday.

I just posted this in another thread about how high Kerrigan might go, figured I might as well move it over here:

Kerrigan is a risky pick at #17 and a conversion project to boot. All the clips I've seen of him have him rushing with either one hand or both hands on the ground. Might be more of a 4-3 DE. Whelp, Hope blooms eternal for that 1st round OLB but BB has never pulled the trigger. Passed on Lawson, Woodley, Matthews and Barwin. Don't even try to guess. I don't think OLB is happening in round 1.

I am skeptical on Watts as a two gap 3-4 DE. I just don't think he's stout enough at the point of attack in the run game. He'll be a great pass rushing/pursuit guy as far as 3-4 DEs go, but I don't think that alone warrants a mid-first round pick on him.

Not sure on Kerrigan as a slam dunk fit for us at OLB enough to warrant a mid first round pick either.

Amen my brother.

I have to wonder if we could not have leapfrogged Washington to take Kerrigan and still had a shot at taking Solder with New Orleans pick?

Possible, but certainly not likely. The Colts were apparently up on Solder, and the Seahawks also took an OT before #28.

I really like Solder, he has far exceeded my expectations. Not sure I could pass on him.

Of course in hindsight, I never thought he would see the field this year. I always suspected we were bringing back Light for more than 1 year. And I thought Vollmer would break through with an All Pro season.

Yep, the Solder pick is looking awfully hard to second-guess. Amazing to recall that he was the "raw developmental kid with tons of upside" -- he can still get much, much better.

I did love Kerrigan, though. My only question at the time was how well he would fit the defense, but it's all too easy to picture him in the mix-em-up defensive alignments of this year. FWIW I don't think it would have been easy to pry him away from Washington -- the pass-rushing DEs went off the board early, and he was a perfect fit for their needs.

One thing that is becoming more clear to me is that if you really want to improve within a given unit it takes years of investment. Several years of drafting plus a free agent signings are needed. Often you don't know how good the harvest will be until 2-3 years down the road.

Aside: They should have signed Peppers when they had the chance, impact defensive linemen don't become free agents very often. I am not saying he is a perfect player but together with Wilfork you can start to build your defense.

Unfortunately the Patriots have not made significant investments in the front seven, no single player in any draft would make much of a difference. What makes me said is that even if they do start to address the front seven,it will take at least a couple of years to find out if they made the right picks.

Ahh, but you forget that if we took Barwin we wouldnt have needed Kerrigan:p

Its pretty bad when fans with limited film on certain players can scout them better than your teams Front Office and Coach.........
