I know it sounds crazy, but while making a roster the 55th player seems marginal. It's someone like Joejuan Williams, Anfernee Jennings, Matt LaCosse, Montravius Adams, or even Brandon Bolden. You get the idea.

Is there a chance Bill keeps two kickers, IRs Folk, and gains a three week trial with Nordin? Then he uses the last spot for a player not claimed or as he often does anyway, tries out a player from another team. With the unlimted IR rule and looser practice squad rules it might be a last chance to get a look at real NFL FA talent.

This all depends on Folk being hurt, but it's a discussion for a day.

Shhhhhhh.....
Kicking Whisperer at work

1) No.

2) The roster limit is 53.

You could pup Folk to test drive Nordin for a few weeks though.
Or IR him to come back later.
Releasing Nordin he Olof get snatched in a second.

Thank you for giving me a chance to be correct on something.

You can not PUP Folk.

The roster is already tight as it is. Who else would you cut then amongst Harry, Michel, Winovich, JoeJuan Williams, Bentley ?

I think Folk is released if they decide to go with Nordin with the understanding he could return once he gets healthy if Nordin goes sideways. Folk’s salary is guaranteed, so he really has no incentive to jump to another team right off.

This way you don’t have to wait 3 weeks to bring him back if Nordin implodes.

Agree. That's how I see this playing out as well.

My thinking immediately was absolutely NO. But I have thought things that was wishful thinking that I got corrected about. These Men/Women on this site are on the ball and I have kearned so much from them. I am glad that you can be a stand up guy and correct yourself. Although they are on the ball some are whiney and cannot ever admit they are wrong. You are a solid poster in my mind

Depends on whether his contract has an offset clause (likely but not a given).

If not, he can double dip with another team.

It will be only Nordin if he continues to play well. This situation is very similar to the Ryan Allen/Jake Bailey decision. Allen was fine and was getting the job done but we went the the monster leg in Bailey and seemed pleased with the decision.

If Nordin is consistent enough and has the monster leg then they'll go with Nordin, especially if they feel he will become more consistent over time, whereas Folk will most likely only degrade over time. He may have another year or two of solid play but the older he gets, the riskier it gets (plus, the more likely the injuries become - he's already dealing with one now)

Thank you for the kind words.

You as well.

It's a little different. I think they saved money with Allen and will lose money cutting Folk.

They drafted Bailey in the 5th round so they were clearly intent on making a move, while Nordin began as a let's see if we can correct his flaws type of project.

I just don't see a massive undercurrent of kicker needs across the league that would up the demand for Folk so much that he's in immediate danger of being scooped up if cut. There are at least 4-5 other free agent vets available according to a couple websites similar to Folk (age and stats) as well.

Plus they cut him before and he wasn't signed immediately. If I was confident this was a potential Super Bowl team - I'd say go with the vet, but I still think they're MAYBE a playoff team (barring catastrophic injuries). The risk/reward return on investment at this point would seem to favor keeping the kid.

My bad. It is 53.

Sorry it's a bad idea.
I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad idea, in no way do I want to lose Nordin, especially if he’s really good the next few weeks.Doesn’t have to be 100% perfect, but it would help his cause. The greatest, most clutch kicker in NFL History (Vinatieri), 3 of his first 6 years were under 80% for field goals, finally hit on 90% in his 7th year. I remember hearing stories Parcells wanted to cut him early in his career.

We’ve had bad luck cutting kickers who wind up being good. Younghoe Koo being that last one (8 for 8 from 50+ last year).

And if another team picks Folk up, I think we get some off-setting salary.....and Nordin replacing him only will take up 300K+ of the cap without any off-set money.
