AJ Derby traded to Broncos for 2017 5th round pick

In a letter to Raider Nation a few days ago he wrote he is moving on .. dreaming of confetti at the end of the season. At the moment Pats certainly look best bet for those confetti ..

This smells alot like trade bait to bundle and move up with to get a player BB really likes in the 2017 draft....Denver and Pats will probably have about same position in the draft rounds so it isn't going to be a top of the 5th round pick....and it will leave BB with the Pats own 5th rounder to draft someone in that round. BB already stocking up picks.

Is that a recent development? Remember that the Reece speculation began when he started following the Patriots immediately following his visit last month.

He followed the Pats after his workout last month, and he sent a "goodbye letter" to Oakland this weekend saying he's off "to help a new team"...and the Bennett following this week also.

Just 5th to a rival in the AFC? We got robbed! Should have asked for a 3rd.

So Mingo - the king on ST every gameday and useful LB backup with possible future here if Collins goes
for Derby - potentially good TE receiver .. mostly inactive .. struggles w blocking and has no ST value

It's more of a replenishment than bundling to move up. They had already lost a 2017:
- 4th rounder due to the Moron
- 5th rounder due to the Mingo trade
- 7th rounder due to the Michael Williams trade from 2015

Since then:
- Traded a 2016 draft pick with Seattle to re-obtain the 4th rounder
- Traded Derby to the Broncos to re-obtain the 5th rounder
- Traded Bostic to the Lions to re-obtain the 7th rounder conditionally.... but the conditions weren't met
- Traded a 6th rounder to the Lions to finally re-obtain the 7th rounder along with Van Noy
- Released Clay Harbor which allows them to obtain a 6th round compensatory pick (most likely) for Hicks

So they're just resetting the cupboard to where it should be. 7 rounds, 7 picks. Plus Jimmy G in hand for now. I could expect something similar in the future to try to finagle a 2018 3rd or 4th rounder to make up for the Rowe trade.

5th rounder for a scrub. Nice.

Nice little motivation added for a win in Denver - increasing the value of the trade

THought they saw him as up and coming in their eyes...guess not

But .. is he already excused from practice on Thursday?

My question is, if the Broncos wanted a TE, why wouldn't they go after a proven vet like Reece? Are they up against the cap?

Seems odd that a team would trade a 5th round pick for a kid who hasn't played a meaningful NFL snap while a pro-bowl TE is on the market.

I don't like the move. Why the donkeys? I think derby got hurt with the depth. Hopefully it's for a trade to get a pass rusher.
