Steelers' DC says Pats do things on the edge of legality.

Butler: "I don't think they're doing anything special. I think they do things outside the box sometimes, you know, that might be on the edge of being legal or not legal. They've done a couple of things in the past — putting an offensive tackle out as ineligible but he's not really. Sometimes the emphasis by the NFL in terms of what they call and what they don't call, (the Patriots) use that a little bit. They've been accused of doing a lot of things. But the thing we've got to do is ignore that and play."

Eh. I don't see a lot in here to get riled up with. Nothing that any well coached team wouldn't already do.

I think he needs to read the rulebook. :D

If we're not pushing the edge of the envelope we're not trying.

Red would be proud of BB.

(And if you're simultaneously a fan of Red and are all in a lather about NE being accused of doing things on the edge of legality, you have cognitive dissonance problems.)

They are game-playing and trying to put the refs on notice. But they are implying NE pushes it too far - a narrative the media will eat up.

Exactly. Pushing the envelope is a huge part of sports. In a basketball game, if the other team is faster and more athletic, what do you do? You get physical with them. If the refs aren't calling fouls, you get more and more physical until you find out what the refs will allow. In baseball, you pitch around the edges of the plate and learn what the umpire's strike zone is that day. If he has a high strike zone, you throw a lot of high fastballs.

This is competitive sports. What losers like Butler are crying about is the Pats getting as physical with receivers as the refs will allow, running a fast paced no huddle offense to tire the defense and not allow them to make substitutions. That's not "bending the rules" it's smart competitive football. Those who whine about this should be embarrassed and ashamed of themselves. Belichick would never allow anyone on his team, never mind a DC, to whine about these things.

We should stop for a second and appreciate Bill Cower for being a man. He said Spygate was nothing and they did the same thing themselves. Told Ben to stop with the BS injury excuses.

Remember that no-name guy in the Steelers secondary years ago who talked a lot before the game? I seem to recall we targeted him all game long, and then BB torched him in the post-game presser, saying that we'd seen a lot better players at that position before. I hope we see a similar beatdown on Sunday. Those guys just annoy me.

Anthony Smith

Who doesn't?

Agree completely, Tomlin is a b!tch, I never expected that.

Anyone have the quote BB said about Anthony smith?

Brady got in his face during the game and talked ****

Trying to find ways to exploit loopholes in the rules is something very few teams do. For instance, all 32 teams who run pick/rub routes.

Spot on, not my cup of tea at all.

That's the thing. For him to imply that the team is on the edge of doing things illegally doesn't make any sense.

He clearly was trying to convey that the team pushes the rulebook to the limit. He just used his words poorly.

I think he's a doofus

The Patriots victimized Smith again early in the second half, when Brady short-hopped a lateral to Moss, Moss tossed the ball back to Brady, and Brady threw a 56-yard rainbow to wideout Jabar Gaffney over Smith's flailing arms to put the Patriots up 24-13.

That Smith was on the short end of both big plays was not an accident. "We've played against a lot better safeties than him, I'll tell you," said Patriots coach Bill Belichick, piling on. "The safety play at that position was pretty inviting."

Late in the fourth quarter, Smith's picture appeared on the Gillette Stadium scoreboard screen. The crowd erupted with chants of "Gua-ran-tee! Gua-ran-tee!"

Damon Hack: After Anthony Smith opened his mouth Patriots made a statement of their own/SI

They must be cheating

They always win

No one always wins in the NFL

THEY MUST BE CHEATING!!!

Yeah, but he's got a point. Those formations really seemed tricky and confusing. Really not fair. I'm also against fake punts and the like. I teach my children to be truthful. Those plays frighten and confuse them.

Exactly. We need a crusade and "Christianize" the NFL. No more deception. Throw out misdirection, cuts, draws, delays, screens, play-action, shifts, sending players in motion, Blitzing, zone coverage, QB spying, everyone has to have their hand on the ground, announce who is rushing or dropping into coverage. In fact, the offense and defense should tell each other exactly what play they will run.

And it's just too physical to. No more hitting. It's flag time baby! And no one named Gronk should be allowed to play, because his size is an unfair advantage. Parity, he has to go!

:)

And speaking of balls, someone needs to check the entire Steelers organization, because either they are extremely deflated, or non-existent. Maybe they are all going through menopause, they are so whiny... (****, that's an insult to women everywhere... they don't whine as much as the Steelers... or Ravens)

Wow, how embarrassing.. you're getting ready to play a big prime time game with a top AFC team that you may have to deal with later on in the playoffs and you immediately resort to implying that they aren't anything special, they just push the envelope (ie they cheat) more than other teams, etc...

really embarrassing.. sounds like they've already been defeated before the game is even played, because that is loser talk.. and you can see the huge culture difference between the Pats and some of these other organizations.. they all talk about the opponents strengths and show respect, but teams like the Steelers whine before the game has even started, crying about how the Patriots don't play fair

"Wait, whats that? Hold the phone folks, just got word from upstairs that we're going to go to a live satellite feed to get Tomlin's comments on the matter"

The Steelers have been pompous and hypocritical for decades, but the initial wound was slit before, during and after the 01AFCC. Since then the Patriots have been spraying mace and digging their heals into it. You can understand why they're so salty and feel the need to over compensate for their lack of success against NE.
