OT: Prince found dead

Prince's popularity and talent are indisputable. What is disputable are claims he was innovative, and influential on popular music at large beyond his own little sphere.
In 2010, Prince was listed in TIME magazine's annual ranking of the "100 Most Influential People in the World"

Didn't know we had this many old curmudgeons on the board. I'm not sure how you can belittle a guy who sold 100-million albums in his lifetime.? Now go back and listen to your Patti Page records!
Age has nothing to do with it. Some older members show respect and appreciation while some younger members are straight ignorant. Just because some people here are Patriots fans doesn't mean that they are good people. I remember some one in the official game thread of Super Bowl 49 got so mad that the Pats were down in the third quarter he started using the N-word. But he got called out right away by a lot of people here who are actually decent people and people who didn't give up on the Pats just because they were down by 10. It's just a fact of life that sometimes you share similar noble interests with people who are actually terrible. I don't want to debate the impact of Prince's music on society and our culture, but people tend to remember the goods things about the recently deceased. I, like a lot of decent members here, expected at the very least that people here would show some respect. If you didn't care then don't comment.

I can't decide which death I care less about. Prince or Chyna.

Tough call.

I think he's addressing the manner in which our society over-worships celebrity entertainers. That's hard to argue with. I understand the sentiment from fans around people like this dying before their time, but speaking as someone who never cared for Prince's music (and I'm not the only one), I think the news coverage yesterday was over the top.
I disagree with his post, as did a number of members who gave it a thumbs down. You assumed that he was giving that perspective, although, a RIP would have been a decent sentiment. I was not a fan. Although, his guitar performance on George Harrison's song from the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is brilliant. Like him or not, he is deserving of the accolades.

Ethics......you should get some.
I wouldn't call it unethical. I would definitely call it tactless. Although, tact isn't necessarily a desired quality these days, especially in a football forum.

Fact is, a LOT of people listened to his music, so a LOT of people require the news of his death.

When you think about it, it's a pretty funny coincidence that these two individuals died on the same day. One was a dude who looked like a broad, and the other was a broad who looked like a dude.

I'll join you in hell for lol'ing at this. :p:(

Or a necessary one. It's an online forum full of strangers. Not a congregation of actual friends or colleagues.

A professed musical expert on CNN last night claimed that Prince influenced Lenny Kravitz. Period. I kept waiting for more input and there was none.

Well there you have it. Person who claims expertise on cable news network says thing.

I own no Prince albums and saw him once at s festival that I didn't attend for him, so I'm not carrying the flag here. But goodness if you think he influenced no other musicians you are blind to the world. As pointed out here earlier, Frank Sinatra called him the best he'd ever seen. When asked how it feels to be the best guitarist in the world, Eric Clapton replied "I don't know, ask Prince." Other musicians adore him, he's held in their highest regard. Those are the experts, his peers, none of whom consider themselves his peer, not some goof on feckin CNN.

I couldn't disagree more about this. There are countless examples that prove that interactions online can affect people in similar ways to face to face interaction. I'm not saying that you have to agree with everything people say, or not denounce nonsense, but to act like these interactions don't count is patently untrue. There are people on the other end, and people matter.

See the thread stickied by Ian started by PatsBoy12 if you'd like an example on this very forum. Kenneth Sims and PB12 reached out to "strangers online" and it may have saved their lives. See more, vibrate higher.

The member exercised his fingers to log onto the political forum and create a post created to an entertainers death. A tribute that happens frequently in the political forum. Typically, the vast majority of members wish prayers or post RIP.

I wasn't a fan of Prince and my pet peeve is embellishing someone who has passed. However, listening to the commentary of people that followed him is intriguing. The stories about him "before" his death and his musical "genius" are incredible.

So, the poster wasn't a fan of Prince nor evidently a humorist. I'm sure there will be another opportunity in the coming year.

Calling me unethical is one thing. I can live with that. But this is going too far. I thought my observation about the similarities between Prince and the female wrestler Chyna, who also died yesterday, was spot on and quite humorous. ;)

Music is another topic that has no right answer. @Tunescribe is not a Prince fan and that's ok. His statement that Prince was not as innovative or influential as people believe to be is fine.

I was a teenager and in college during Prince's prime and while I like his music, in terms of being a game-changer during that era IMO Nirvana/Kurt Cobain is ahead of Prince as more influential/ game changer on the music scene. That is not to say that Kurt was more talented than Prince. In fact, its not even close but you don't need to be the most talented person to make an impact.

I was mostly referring to the fact that "online reputation" is meaningless and has zero impact on my day to day life.

I can't control (or even care) how others online perceive my comments. If it was up to me, every single online forum would be free of restrictions on what people can say and how they can behave, and if people have a problem with a certain poster, they can put that member on their ignore list.

Have you read the thread on Curt Shilling?

Just because we are not a celb, doesn't mean there could be consequences.

Sure, posting something offensive on your real social media account could get you into trouble. That's not comparable to posting anonymously on an online forum.

That's actually part of the reason I don't even use FB or Twitter, actually.

True, but people have several accounts, mixed them up.

Problem with doing a certain behavior most of the time is you may enter an environment when it's inappropiate/not tolerated and might forget.

I'm not the biggest fan of anonymous posters, as some really abuse it and do things they would dare not do in person. If I don't want to say it to someone's face, I generally don't say it online either.

Anonymity does not grant a license to be an *******. The measure of an action is not just about how it affects one's self, but how it affects others too.

I'm talking about an extreme case here - a serial troller. Definitely nobody at PatsFans.

A guy that seemed to revel being the world's worst troller was outed, had death threats, lost his job (which his kids and diabetic wife depended on.) Played the victim in CNN. All he did was invest thousands of hours posting every kind of slur imaginable, encouraging posters to put up pictures of underage girls up their skirts without their permission. http://gawker.com/5950981/unmasking-reddits-violentacrez-the-biggest-troll-on-the-web

At least 90% of what's wrong on the internet is spammers and trollers...they would not exist in a face-to-face environment - they would get killed. When I moderated in the past, often the IP, email, etc would blow their cover.

If someone is inconsiderate or cruel most of the time, eventually it's going to haunt them.

This guy sounds like he spent the majority of his time online. I'm surprised he had time for a job and family.
