He is right. Sports and scholarships are almost like indentured servitude. Get injured and need hospital rehab, guess who pays? Not the College, get hurt, lose your scholarship. Team meeting from 5-11AM class then afternoon practice. Tom Coughlin was one of the worst as far as far as giving players time to be students. Worked out great for Tom and the college made $.

Football is on the way down in the US.

School is about education foremost and sports are supposed to be secondary.

Whats wrong with graduating with a degree and also excelling at sports?

Okay, let's have Nick Saban and Urban Meyer work for free and just have a full scholarship.

The problem is that football and select other sports have to also pay for the tons of non revenue generating sports' athletes. Scholarships and the costs of the sport. Most college sports don't generate revenue and the money has to come from somewhere. And with Title IX, if the college QB got paid then the female LF would need to be paid equally.

lol if you think for one second that elite college athletes are getting a real education. They aren't going to class, they are practicing and working out because there is literally not enough time to do both. The team arranges so that the players show their faces in class a few times a week so as to meet BS minimum requirements and thats it.

So don't give me that "they are getting a free 40k a year education!" bulls.hit. No they aren't

Well that's their choice. Plenty do both so there's certainly the opportunity should they so choose.

No one forces anyone to play college sports. If you don't like what is being offered, then don't play.

Yes, an 18 year old kid who knows little about the world considering he just spent all of high school dedicated to playing sports at an elite level can be trusted to properly weigh out the pros and cons before making a life altering decision when he has some of the most famous school and most accomplished coaches literally coming up to their door steps promising the world to them if only they just agree to play football for them. Especially when a significant portion of these kids come from poor backgrounds and have little chance for a decent future if not for sports.

Bull. Sh.it.

Not that I disagree with the sentiment that during your teenage years, you need guidance and probably don't know a heap about the world but, at what age do you consider being "old enough" to make important life decisions? We can't continue to baby the next generation because soon enough, they'll be in their thirties and still not have a clue.

At some point, you simply have to take responsibility for your own life.

Isn't this where parents, teachers, mentors, etc. come into play???

When you are an elite young athlete your biggest mentor in life is nearly always your coach. They spend more time with them then their parents. And what do you think their main priorities are when regarding your future? They look good too when their star players get recruited by a big name school. And when you come from a poor family who most likely wouldn't be able to send you to college if not for sports what do you think the parents are going to say? They are going to treat a sports scholarship as a gift from god.

They're being the opposite of "babied", they're essentially being sabotaged by people who don't necessarily have their best interests at heart.

You go through public schooling so when your 18 you can be fully functional by yourself. 18 your perfectly fine to make decisions

That would pay for classes getting free scholarship.

Contrary to your all too common belief not everyone goes through life as a Randian superman, capable of bootstrapping their way up the socioeconomic ladder to a better life.

I don't really have an opinion about this, but I think it is silly to try and turn it into a racial issue. I guess he just wanted attention to what he was saying and he knew that bringing up race would be the best way.

Wow! That's f*cked up if that's the case. And they prohibit them from making any type of money? How in the hell are they supposed to pay for the recovery?

Thank god World War 2 isn't today with these little 18 yo babies and their whoa is me attitude.

Get out of here with this "lazy" entitled millennial crap. If you want to spew this stuff I'm sure there's some dumb thread in the political subforum for you.
