This will not count the years 2000, 2008 and we don't have enough on 2015 yet though I think it will rank pretty well. Injuries will of course effect this to a large degree and will be where a lot of disagreement will probably happen.
#13 - 2002 - This team had its good points but the injuries really hurt it. If not for the injuries it would probably rank much higher but we can only go bu what they did. Also this is the only BB/Brady team to miss the playoffs though barely.
#12 2009 - With the talent on this team you would think it would rank higher. However it was clear this was a come back year for Brady and probably the worst he has played since his rookie year. The defense was clearly just starting the rebuild and it showed.
#11 2006 - This team almost and maybe should have made the super bowl. However it is clear when looking at the talent on that is over achieved. This was IMO Brady's single best year and he took an offense that could have been the worst in the NFL and will it to be decent. The defense was good this year but I think they were not as good as their ranking. It passed the stat test but not the eye test.
#10 2013 - This year is hard to measure. I call it the Gronk/No Gronk year. Also Talib Started hot then injuries slowed him down per usual at this point in his career. However the key is losing Gronk half way through the year and him never coming back. The weapons here were just not good and they had little help besides Edelman and Gronk.
#9 2012 - This year you had a healthy offense for most of the year and it was a horse. The D added Talib about half way through the year and they looked liked super bowl hopefuls perhaps even favorites after that. The injury bug bit though and just a bad game where the whole team just messed up (not unlike the 2005 playoff game) sunk it. I think they should have been better but it just didn't fall into place.
#8 2010 - The offense after getting rid of Moss and putting in Branch with Gronk/Hernandez coming into their own became very good and helped Brady have an Amazing year.. His play was no small part either of course. Fully back from his 2008 injury health wise and it showed. The defense however was not quite up to the job and could not carry the game when the offense hit a snag vs a very bad Jets O.
#7 2001 - Surprised to see a Superbowl champ ranked so low? Well lets be honest. This team was lucky to win the SB. In all honestly they probably should not. However they had heart and guts and a pretty talented O and some underrated offensive skill players that allowed Brady to just be a game manager most of the time though when asked to have a clutch drive he showed his trade mark ice water veins but the tools where clearly not up to snuff yet.
#6 2011 - This team would have won the Superbowl if not for an unlucky injury in the AFCCG. Even without a healthy Gronk they had good options in Hernandez and Welker. They were good enough and should have won but a bad drop and a toss up Gronk would have almost certainly come down with are the plays that stick out. The defense was not that good but it was better than most years in this span as they got a few helpful FAs.
#5 2005 - This team was clearly super bowl level and should have won but then something happened which will happen on occasion. After 10 straight playoffs wins the whole team just had 1 bad game where everything went wrong. I have not before or since seen BB just toss his clip board in disgust during a game. It just dumb play after dumb play after bad execution after bad execution. This is why no matter how good your team is it is near impossible to 3-peat in the NFL. Hiccups will happen.
#4 2003 - This was 2004 minus a good running game but the defense was the sing best unit the Patriots probably ever had. There was simply no where to attack really. They did have a let down game defensively in the Super Bowl but Brady was Pretty darn good by now and had reasonably good weapons too and was able to use them to out score what was a very good Carolina D.
#3 2004 - Honestly if things broke differently this team could be argued #1. They could run. They had a fairly talented good of pass catchers. Brady was just hitting his prime and that defense was really something. The gauntlet the qualities teams they mowed through in their 15 straight wins can not be over stated.
#2 2007 - Honestly I was considering putting this #3. If 2004 was healthy (They won without arguably their best defensive player in Law) I think they would be #3. But you need to respect what this team did. They really should have won that year.
#1 2014 - Okay this is going to be critized a bit perhaps. However when i look at the 2007 and the 2014 team the fact is the 2014 team had more talent once it got going. 2007 did go 18-0 and almsot 19-0 but it was clear it had flaws there were almost exploited a few times that year and finally were. 2014 had a slow start but once it got rolling it was clear it was the ream we thought it would be. A very talented D that was able to surive a far amount of injuries and still be effective and a scheme proof offense that ultimately stopped 2007. The best Pats team ever.
Thoughts?
