Your 2015 Pittsburgh Steelers...

Our top reserve (Dan McCullers) is a mountain who can move a pile on his own.

He was a BIG draft favourite for one of our posters.

Yup still Heath Miller. He's lost a step and he's starting to drop passes he'd catch easily in his early days. But he's still a pretty good TE who can find soft spots in a zone. Good RZ target as well.

Don't we remember! (And that might be a big factor on Thursday, given that we all expect NE to be playing a lot of zone.)

Question 2: Is Pittsburgh’s defense really that bad?

Yup.

Moving on…

Question 3: Why exactly is it so bad when they’ve invested so many high round picks over the past 3 years in the defense?

It’s a combination of inexperience, a new defensive scheme, a tendency towards overly aggressive/undisciplined play, and suspect talent at the key positions.

Pittsburgh doesn’t exactly lack for talent per se on defense. Cameron Heyward is a stud 3-4 DE, and Stephon Tuitt looks like he’ll be a monster bookend for years to come (although Tuitt is dinged and may not play). There is talent and depth at ILB (Timmons, Shazier), and we’ve invested heavily all across the linebacking core with 1st round picks. I actually don’t think the CB situation is as bad as advertised – they may have a bunch of average corners at best IMO, but CB isn’t their biggest issue.

The biggest issue with the defense IMO is recognition and football IQ – players routinely break down in their assignments, either due to poor recognition, poor understanding of the defense, or pure over-aggressiveness. Shamarko Thomas – the heir apparent to Troy P, who the Steelers traded up to grab a couple of years ago – is the most egregious offender here. He has been caught out of position on at least two TD passes this preseason, and I’m starting to doubt whether he has the between-the-ears component required to play safety in the NFL. Jarvis Jones is another – several times a game he crashes inside and vacates containment. Shazier is a whirlwind, but lacks ballast and can be blown out of plays if OLinemen reach the 2nd level. Put these things together, and there are frequent, major gaps each game that an offense can easily exploit.

[EDIT: As of Sunday, Shamarko Thomas is benched and Will Allen is Thursday’s starting strong safety. Allen is a savvy veteran...with none of Thomas’ speed or athleticism.]

Pitt also has a new D Coordinator (Keith Butler), and they seem intent on playing a new scheme that involves more push upfield from the DL on pass rushing downs, and more Cover 2 on the back end. The problem is that Thomas and the free safety, Mike Mitchell, have only played a handful of downs together this preseason, and in any event seem miles away from having the savvy and communication level needed to successfully execute the Cover 2. This issue extends to the ILBs, who have to quickly determine if they have to sprint back to get adequate depth in a cover 2…I’ve noticed several occasions this preseason where the ILBs have sprinted back only to get gashed by a delayed handoff or draw. I’m concerned that Pitt simply lacks the veteran smarts required to run the Cover 2 at this time.

Finally, I fear that Pittsburgh may simply not be very good at safety or OLB. James Harrison had a great camp and seems to have found the fountain of youth, but it’s not a good sign that he is clearly still Pittsburgh’s best pass rusher…how long until he breaks down? Jarvis Jones flashes but is undisciplined; Arthur Moats is mostly a journeyman on the other side, and Bud Dupree is a year away (at least). And aside from a single nice season in Carolina, Mitchell is almost as much an unproven commodity at safety as Thomas.

One last note re/ the defense: it’s worth monitoring the conditions of starters Lawrence Timmons, Stephon Tuitt, and Mike Mitchell in the days leading up to the game. All three were dinged to varying degrees over the last couple of weeks of the preseason. It would not be surprising to me if any of these guys were to miss the game, or at least be significantly limited within it; Timmons is really the guy to watch here as he makes all of the defensive calls. Pitt also added a 7th DLineman Sunday--a possible indicator that Tuitt will not be able to go.

Bottom line: it will not take much in the way of scheme or talent for New England to exploit the Pittsburgh defense. I know NE’s offense has struggled somewhat in the preseason, and I know there have been some concerns on this board about NE’s talent and depth at wideout and RB…but frankly it just won’t take much to confuse our defense badly (and repeatedly). Against less cerebral quarterbacks and coaches, we might be okay…I really doubt this will be the case against Brady and BB.
Thanks for this. Question: is there any significant difference in defensive scheme/philosophy from LeBeau to Butler as defensive coordinator?

· Do you have any significant concerns going into this game? (Not necessarily just in the matchup with Pittsburgh per se, but for the team as a whole?)
· Just curious: who, exactly, is playing early running back for NE these days?
Wov, u are the best. What a nice post.

I am worried about our O-line.
Stork missing today practice, two rookies probably starting at G. LG big concern.

Bolden or Lewis as first down RB

Thanks for this. Question: is there any significant difference in defensive scheme/philosophy from LeBeau to Butler as defensive coordinator?
A number of the defensive linemen have commented that Butler is allowing for more of an attacking/penetrating style from the the front 3. This is probably partly a comment on the makeup of the team circa 2015, where we have unproven pass rushers at OLB, but 3-4 ends that are capable of getting after the QB. In a Lebeau defense, the 3-4 ends are all about eating up blockers and allowing the linebackers to make the plays.

We also played more Cover 2 in the preseason. (Significantly, we did not play it well...so it remains to be seen if this is something that we actually roll out in the first game as a significant defensive package).

There's been some speculation that Butler may blitz a bit more than LeBeau, as well.

Whether this is all a good thing or not remains to be seen. Being more aggressive won't matter if we are repeatedly burned on the back end...OTOH our approach last year clearly didn't work either (30th I believe in defensive efficiency).

My questions for Pats Nation:

· What is the best approach, in your opinion, to attack NE offensively and defensively?

Air it out with 4 and 5 WR sets.

Defensively, you're probably screwed. You need big safeties or tremendous coverage LBs to face this Patriots TE group.

Here's where RDE Tuitt's health could make a difference for Pitt. Tuitt was a 20 year old 2nd round pick last year, and he was widely considered to be a probable 1st round pick in 2015 if he'd stayed his senior year.

In this year's camp he's been unblockable for large stretches, and really looks like he will be a stud (along with Heyward on the other side) going forward. But he was dinged with an ankle injury a couple of weeks ago, and it's not certain that he'll play. (He *did* practice today apparently...but that doesn't mean that he'll play Thursday, or that he'll play effectively).

Tuitt also represents why there actually is a silver lining to our struggles defensively of late -- we do have a lot of young, physically talented players on defense who simply need more experience. The hope is that the defense can mature this year the way the OL (which was a miserable unit as late as 2013) did last year. But this will take time; it's a reason why I think Pitt is still probably still a year away from being a legitimate contender.

You might be thinking of me. In the past couple of drafts (not this year, but the two prior), I've wanted McCullers, Tuitt and Wheaton

An entirely different secondary not yet gelled ... hell yeah if I'm the Steelers I agree.

FWIW Wheaton's development has been overshadowed by Bryant's, simply because Bryant is the prototypical size/speed guy and is so physically dominant.

But Wheaton quietly had an outstanding camp. Obviously we're going to need him to be a legit WR2 threat this year...he and Ben were not on the same page frequently last year. I really like his game: quick in and out of cuts, good enough speed to get deep, big effort guy (good blocker etc.) Good route-runner, his apparent playbook knowledge issues last year notwithstanding.

McCullers is a bit of an enigma. Every time he's on the field, he has a couple of plays where he pushes the entire line back several steps...I imagine it must be his conditioning that prevents him from getting more snaps, as he certainly seems to be extremely effective when he's in there. He's a true giant (reminds me a bit of the Jags' John Henderson/Marcus Stroud days)

In all seriousness, I'm sure that will be Pitt's gameplan, and it will be up to the line to hold up against your front 7. Tough task, that.

I will say, with Bryant this matchup might have looked like a video game. But we have a severe depth dropoff after Brown, Wheaton, and Bryant. Heyward-Bey is a drop machine, and Coates needs time to develop.

Defensively for the Steelers this week pressure is the key I think. Stork not practicing today, so if he doesn't go there's a good chance you have Wendell at C between two rookies. Outside of CB, that's the biggest question mark going into week 1.

Nice thread. Thanks for sharing.

That's interesting, because I thought LeBeau's defenses always were very attack-oriented via zone-blitzing. I thought I'd heard that under Butler the Steelers wouldn't be as aggressive, but perhaps I'm mistaken.

I was thinking of Mackenzie -- but, now you mention it, I recall you being a fan.

Welcome back, lillloyd.

I always pick the Pats, but this team has been a notoriously slow starter. During the 2001 - 2004 run, the team's core group seemed to remain intact. Whether you talk offensive line, receivers, defensive backs, running backs or front 7, what shows up may not be what stands on the field in 5 weeks or so. Always tough to predict what happens.

Last year was just painful, and I was personally happy to see Brady's head still attached to his neck after those 4 games. The Raiders looked all world against the Pats, and they were ranked below the Steelers last year. In that game, Justin Tuck hit Brady as hard as I think anybody has hit. That seems like every season of late, with all the moving parts and new pieces on the field.
