PRESEASON GAME DAY THREAD (8/22): Patriots vs. Saints

A morning thought:

Logan Ryan's terribleness thus far this preseason has made the CB depth look even worse. I think we all thought he could be a decent Cb3/Cb4, but he's getting torched by walmart employees.

As long as Roberts isn't injured badly (I imagine he would have been put on IR already if he was), he looks like a top 3 CB, and that's not good. His coverage against the GB 1s and TC play makes him better than Ryan already.
------------------------------------------------

Butler = budding superstar
.
.
Brown = resume + camp reviews (BB won't play him yet at CB2 in game though)
.
.
.
Roberts = A+ athleticism, lead camp in PBUs, GB game. Injured, 7th round rookie.
------------------------------------------------

McClain: 5'9 JAG
Fletcher: JAG (Has he got one preseason snap vs. starters yet?)
Ryan: Can't play man to man in the NFL

I ll be surprised if BB pay for Mathis. They need money for Solder, Hightower and Collins.
IMO BB will try what he have and their goal is playoff. And u know in playoff everything is possible.
Another thing to consider signing Mathis is Brady potential suspension.

I'm not sure Hightower and Collins are an issue because even if Mathis signs for two years, both don'r have to be extended until after the 2016 season. And even if Hightower (and Chandler Jones) are extended before then, there cap cost will come down rather than go up in 2016 (because they're both on expensive options).

Signing Mathis is just the type of thing Seattle did when they went to the SB the last two years (although they did it in a different way through trade and FA) - getting a quality vet for the short term that's good enough to put an already talented roster over the top. That's how I see Mathis working for us.

A mourning thought or a morning one?

Hard to argue with your reasoning. Let's hope Brown, Butler and Roberts stay healthy.

@PP_Rich_Hill: On initial review of Brady drives, looks like Fleming/Vollmer were issues in run game. WR Gibson ended a run play, too. Rookie Gs okay.

@PP_Rich_Hill: Shaq and Hooman struggling in their blocks to open the second quarter. No sand in their pants.

@PP_Rich_Hill: 1st half review: Patriots pass blocking p good. Cam Jordan won match-up v Shaq, but Shaq fine otherwise. Fleming had a rough night.

@PP_Rich_Hill: Defensively, p good outing for the DL. They were disruptive, especially Sheard. He's a stud. Easley on the end was hit/miss.

@PP_Rich_Hill: LBs nondescript other than Collins bad outing, Freeney poor pass coverage. Morris solid. DBs really rough time defending. No cohesion.

@PP_Rich_Hill: Patriots used two RBs out of the backfield on a handful of snaps. Really opens up middle of the field. http://t.co/PjEk6FsPWD

@PP_Rich_Hill: Two back sets are fun with the tiny White/Lewis. Have to imagine the larger Cadet would add a whole different element with flexing outside.

Garoppolo's five incompletions: 1) Harper miscommunication 2) Batted at line 3) Overthrew Harper/DPI non-call 4) Bad INT 5) Too high Mundine

Doug Kyed has pass defines and pass rush stats.

PASS COVERAGE
Daxton Swanson: 4-4, 67 yards
Logan Ryan: 3-6, 66 yards, pass breakup
Duron Harmon: 1-1, 45 yards Jamie Collins: 2-2, 40 yards
Devin McCourty: 2-3, 36 yards, pass breakup
Jonathan Freeny: 3-3, 27 yards, touchdown
Tavon Wilson: 1-2, 24 yards
Darius Fleming: 1-1, 8 yards
Jordan Richards: 1-2, 6 yards, touchdown
Bradley Fletcher: 1-4, 6 yards, two pass breakups
Xzavier ****son: 1-1, 5 yards
Patrick Chung: 1-3, 2 yards
Nate Ebner: 0-1
Robert McClain: pass interference, pass breakup —
Malcolm Butler started at left cornerback and wasn’t targeted.

Nice for Bradley Fletcher.

The cooks TD over Harmon was right in front of me and I was screaming "turn around." Looked like he could make a play on the ball but the angle from my seat wasn't the greatest, what's the consensus from watching on TV?

The Pats were well represented last night, I was surprised how many fans we had in attendance, was nice to see.

i think Goodell just found his next scandal.

BB was quoted as saying, “I’m glad we don’t have to play him twice a year, he’s not in our division, He’s a really good player.”.

Obviously, BB likes to get players, on his team, that have had success against him (Wes Welker, Revis, ...). Would it be more probably than not, that any time BB compliments a player he is tampering with the ability for that team to make a fair offer the next time contracts come up. ;)

obvious sarcasm for those that don't understand.

Chandler Jones looks super explosive

I've thought the same all preseason. Nink looks solid, but when doens't he.

But Sheard and Jones have looked ....VERY VERRYYYY good in their 2 games so far. They're both dominant off the line

Barring injury Jones should have another 12 sack season at the worst if he plays how he has against a pair of very good LT's. Sheard may look even better than Jones this preseason too but he hasn't seen the 1's as much, he's clearly viewed as the #3 DE right now but when the real games start and it's 1's against 1's all game I suspect he'll still be making the same impact.

Good Points especially on CJ, Nink & Sheard. In real game time, they will be key in makin our DBs make plays. Pressure from Front 7 will bring heat, looking forward to it.

Oh yeah, lets also remember our 1's have gone up against Brees and Rodgers, they make a lot of teams look bad.
