Why is Tomase still considered an 'authority' in Boston sports media?

I can't help but be really annoyed every time I look at the headline list here and see some Tomase quote or article. Now I am not advocating removing all his stuff from the headlines because I don't think anything should be omitted there as its all Patriots news no matter how dumb. But how has Tomase not be completely ostracized from Boston sports media for the damage he has done to the Pats due to, at best, sheer incompetence? And I would of course argue he knowingly lied and distorted the information he had. I don't have to remind anyone what he did regarding Spygate and how because of his baseless and slanderous claims we are nationally known as the team that taped practices and walkthroughs. Doesn't matter that the Herald had to officially retract it, he hurt the team forever. Considering the sheer clout that the Patriots organization has within the local media you'd think he'd have been forced to move to another market long ago.

I think he is around because he is a cheap hire...

Nothing more ....

If I had done what he did, I would shut up about this entire deflated footballs situation. Why this guy still has a job, never mind in the Boston area, floors me. He's never given anything more than the usual generic perspective anyway. He's a me too writer.

The media protects their own. No one told Steve DeOssie that maybe he should have chosen his words a little more carefully during a Giants pre-SB rally 4 years ago. Instead, he got 2 different columns defending him.

You never hear anyone mention Tomase's should-have-been career damaging screw up, but they have no problem bringing up Belichick's mistakes, whether it's spygate or a failed draft pick from 6 years ago. That's not to say the media shouldn't be able to question or criticize coaches and players. Just realize if you're going to hold them to a high standard, you should have some standards for your co-workers, too.

Exactly. I can't for the life of me understand why he's still in the area. Both because I can't understand why anyone would hire him, and because I can't understand why he'd /want/ to be here where everyone loathes him.

The culture among media members around here has some curious characteristics. One of the absolutes is that if you skewer the home teams you are a ballsy, independent person who is among the crusaders seeking truth and objectivity over all else. Another is that if you're inclined toward true objectivity and fairness toward the locals, you're a gutless, fanboy who licks their genitals. No in-between, no gray area. I've said this before, what guys like Borges, Shank, Felger, Tomase, Volin et al really hate is not the teams. It's us.

It looks like Tomase has been taking shots at the Pats over this based on the headlines of his articles, but I would not know because I refuse to give his articles any clicks.

One thing that has bothered me over this mess is that some of the writers who I normally believe to be the good guys are trying not to be homerish and are writing things like:
Finding the middle ground
Look at the other side's perspective
They obviously did someting wrong
You're being a homer if you don't think they are partially guilty
Both sides (the NFL and Pats) have been wrong

NO! I reject this entirely. It's so gutless. The balls were either tampered with or not and no objective person could read the entire Wells report objectively and say they are guilty.

He is an a-hole and will always be one. Enough said.

This 1000x. Minihane, more of the same. Pro trolls.

Mike Holly has been solid, Jerry Thornton a great addition there.
Still unfortunately packaged with Dale, whose every statement could begin with with "I'm afraid..."

Dale is the guy who would be kicked out of Calvinist preacher school for being too rigid.

If I may take liberties with Robin Williams' quote in Goodbye Viet Nam..

"Jon, you are in more dire need of a wedgie than any white man in history".

I like Dale, but that's a good way to put it. He thinks that every authority figure in the history of the world has been 100% on the up and up forever.

Some of them hate the teams too, though. Borges is Exhibit A.

I don't think anyone on this board-even the trolls consider Tomase an authority on anything.

Do other cities have so many media guys that hate the team as much as Boston?

Dale is a great partner for Holley, as long as they stay on the nuts and bolts of sports. The problem arises when they get into morality, as Dale uses every such opportunity to take a long ride on his high horse. That brings the D&H show from "must listen radio" to "Maybe Felger's not being too trollish today. Let me check".

If you tweet Tomase about Matt Walsh, he will block you. I encourage you to do it. Pats fans should also ask him about Matt Walsh on his weei show on Sunday mornings. I stopped reading or listening to any negative patriots spin so I don't even turn on talk radio. I will never read or listen to Tomase again. Blows my mind that weei hired him.

Who said he was an authority?

TomASSee has a radio show, WTF. This shows just how low sports media ha fallen, at one time the writers and broadcasters in Boston were considered the best in the country. I'm going back to the 5os up until at least the late nineties, maybe the early 'oo. But that reputation has gone to sht. When you give a mediocre clown like tomASSee his own show it proves it. Hes only (in)famous for one thing, the walsh tapes.
