Both good points:

1. I love how this team is being put together so in truth I'd love everyone back but my pessimism tells me that that just won't happen and at a nearly 8m cap hit I just wonder whether Vollmer might be a casualty. I'm hoping not and its just speculation on my part.

2. I can see Ayers doing an Edelman as you say and signing a one year deal that will allow him to re-establish himself in the eyes of the NFL.

I love this team right now, but I have a few question.

Do you think the patriots try to draft a tight end on the draft seeing as how Tim wright hasn't played many snaps. I believe he has potential to be a very good compliment to gronk.(very Hernandezesque)

And secondly do you see them drafting a corner. Because I don't know why dennard wasn't playing against Denver. Was he injured? Because I like dennard over Malcolm butler.

But maybe I'm just jumping the gun.

It's too early to tell. I personally think that Wright will be a fine move TE and complement to Gronk, but that a day 3 TE to upgrade Hooman makes sense. CB depends on Revis' situation. It's not out of the question, but I don't think it's a priority if Revis is extended.

first time poster, long time follower. appreciate your insights. Quick question: do you think tyler gaffney could be the answer for the ridley replacement next year? he blew up the combine after playing baseball prior to a great senior year. a year in preparation and he might be of value.

going forward, i'd like to see us resign revis, of course, and then try to strip some salary (connolly, maybe browner, edelman, wendell, arrington, chung). i think our depth could take the hit and still be ok. then take the money and go hard after suh. i think he's a transformative talent and would be a perfect fit for what we need. suh, easley, an aging wilfork, chris jones, with saliga would be stout against the run and still be able to push the pocket. we could use draft choices to replete depth on the o-line, linebacker, safety. i think this would comprise a defense that would be among the league's best.

Connolly and Chung are FAs. There's no salary to strip - it's a question of re-signing them. Both have played well, as have Wendell and Edelman, who were re-signed this year, along with Browner. I don't see those players being likely candidates for cap relief.

I think keeping Revis and signing Suh is next to impossible, and not the way BB works. I doubt Suh is a realistic option.

Given the experiences in recent years (TJ Moe, Armond Armstead, etc.), I believe it would be safer to assume that he will contribute nothing, and then be pleasantly surprised if he does.

Or, put slightly differently, let's hope he's like the last Gaffney to be a Patriot. :D

I'm not sure that's likely; they just renegotiated Mt. Vollmer's contract to increase the likelihood they pay his incentives. Why do that if they feel it's too much?

point taken on connolly and chung, although there will still be money available from connolly and chung's departure compared to this year. in addition, they will receive some relief from hernandez, and likely mccourtey once he's resigned. i'm not miguel, but brady's number will drop as well i think.

i'm sorry i meant amendola, not edelman. i think amendola has been ok but i don't think his value is reflective of his cap number. he's likely gone. i also think the jury is still out on browner. he was poor his first game (i know not game-fit) and has now strung together two games where he's been alternately effective and exposed. let's give him a few more games before declaring him an essential piece going forward.

there are other savings as well. as superb as he's been, i wouldn't be surprised if they let the kicker go. afterall, we let a good kicker walk in the past when his number got too big. good kickers are all over the place and BB could, i bet, find another. bottom line, i do believe there will be space to pursue suh if we decide to.

regarding the BBs style, he has in the past been willing to go after truly great talents (moss, dillon, revis, even hainsworth who was truly great for a couple years) and i think suh fits into this category. i think aside from jj watt he's the most dominant defensive player in the league and would be transformative for this defense. i think they could structure a deal that the team could live with, especially if brady's deal remains as is.

gaffney's knee injury was a torn lateral meniscus, which is a relatively minor injury. there are two types of surgery for this, but with a "standard" approach he'd likely be fully recovered by december. he had a remarkably effective senior year at stanford despite playing baseball exclusively the year prior, then posted some of the best numbers at the combine for running backs. additionally, unlike armstead and moe, he was highly enough rated to be drafted despite some concerns that he would return to baseball. bb felt he was valuable enough to occupy a roster spot through training camp. BB clearly doesn't like to spend much on running backs and gaffney could be a nice candidate for the power back spot as low dollars. so i think it's appropriate to be more hopeful that he could contribute, especially after a year in the system with all that entails. just sayin....

We want to re-sign McCourty and Revis. We have new contracts looming for Chandler Jones and Hightower. Not sure we're going to commit the really big dollars it would take to land Suh. If Suh takes Detroit for a big contract I'd check what Fairley would want and also Jared Odrick. Neither are as good as Suh. But, might be more affordable.

I'd love to make a run at one of Fairley, Odrick or Terrance Knighton.

I'd agree with any of the players listed above. At present, our biggest need, in my opinion, is someone to solidify the d-line and pressure the opposing quarterback. However, we talk about money around here as if it was our own. We now have a young team with many low cost players and relatively few high priced veterans. We are well-positioned for next years' draft and should add additional low-cost talent. Many teams, Detroit included, afford more than one large contract and still are ways to make it work without bankrupting the future. if in fact brady plays for 8mil/y then i think we can give revis and probably another player "max" money for their position and still have money for depth. Detroit has stafford and megatron, Denver will have about three or four of these type players (thomas, miller, payton, plus some other high priced players like talib), Seattle will soon have wilson, thomas, and sherman. If in fact brady plays at a substantial discount we should be able to afford "quarterback money" split between a db and a tackle, or an edge rusher, or another player of value. I assume, after all, that that is precisely why brady would agree to take a discount. As i said, i'm not miguel but it'd be an interesting proposition to consider and i'm not sure it's unachievable.

Try this mock on for size:

Round 1-TJ Clemmings, OL
Round 2-Zach Hodges, OLB
Round 3-Jaquiski Tartt, DB
Round 3 (Comp)-Tevin Coleman, RB
Round 4 (TB)-Tyler Kroft, TE
Round 4-Preston Smith, DE
Round 6-Lynden Trail, OLB
Round 6-De'Ante Saunders, DB
Round 6 (Comp)-Charles Tuaau, DL
Round 7-Jermaine Barton, OL

Thoughts?

I like all of the players on your list that I've seen. Only one I haven't is Tartt. And, those who have like him. I just don't see Coleman dropping to 97. If we want him, we better take him in the 2nd. Maybe, you can do that and trade up in round 3 for Hodges by kicking in our 4th. Him and Preston Smith would both prob be de's in our system.

I love Clemmings, Hodges, Coleman and Trail so sign me up. I agree with PatsfaninPA that Coleman in the late third is optimistic and whilst I really like Hodges, he's a little undersized for this team. Smith, Tartt and kroft are all names I can get behind too.

BTW, have you seen Lynden Trails highlight tape? So much fun . He'd make a great TE.

Very nice mock. If bb came away with this haul, I would have no complaints.

Dane Brugler has a new mock up. Has a guy in there we talked about last week. Has Malcolm Brown - DT - Texas going 26. Texas D is really coming around after a terrible start. Shelton going 23rd. I'm starting to lean towards a DT instead of a DE in Round 1. Willing to use my 3rd to move up. My reasoning; While I'd like to sign a younger DT in free agency. I doubt it. Want to focus on extending Revis. Signing McCourty and re-doing Mayo's contract. VW is looking good. Bring him back next year and red-shirt his eventual replacement. Shelton or Brown. If Mayo comes back, the combo of Hightower or Collins can take snaps to give Ninko some rest.
