He always was things went bad when they tried to use him in coverage.I'm loving Patrick Chung's new role with this defense...idk exactly how many tackles for lost that he's had but he was there on every time the Bills ran the ball.
They have definitely found his niche. Unfortunately, Mayo's injury has an impact here, I believe. Chung may be called on in the nickel as a coverage man, since Skinner is so slow and Hightower struggles in coverage as well. I wonder if this means less Hightower coming off the edge on passing downs and more coverage responsibilities as well?I'm loving Patrick Chung's new role with this defense...idk exactly how many tackles for lost that he's had but he was there on every time the Bills ran the ball.
So Chung's the next player up on the "Getting grossly overrated" list, apparently...
The Patriots are doing a good job playing him to his strengths in a rotational role. He has done very well in that capacity and nobody is overrating him because what he is doing deserves the response this thread gives. So Chung's the next player up on the "Getting grossly overrated" list, apparently...

Calling him a good in the box safety and liability isn't grossly overrating him. It's a fact. He's played his role quite well this season, but we've also seen him out of that role and look not so hot.
He is what he is, and the coaching has done a good job to protect him (and the defense) from himself. He's not DMC but he's also not Merriweather, and he probably is playing his role better than Gregory played his specific role, so far.
He's been an improvement for the defense, IMO.
A "pleasant surprise" is a fitting description for Chung, lets hope it lasts. This defense has been excellent for the most part at not allowing big plays passing or running.
Many of us were talking about the addition of Revis leading to the ability of the Patriots to play the S2 in a limited role and limit that player's liability. In other words, we were discussing ways for the Patriots to cover for the suck of the S2.
That's what we're seeing here.
We could argue that our S2 role has changed though, I don't have access to NFL Game rewind, but how often has Chung been asked to play a half of the defensive backfield?
The only time I can openly recall seeing him deep is when he's manned up against an RB or TE, and he's actually shown decent coverage at time in those scenarios. He's mostly been used inside the box and he's played well there.
The thread is about Chung's play. He's exceeded expectations (not that that was difficult considering he was considered a camp body by most).
And it doesn't matter if his liabilities are being covered or not, there are specific things he's being asked to do, and when he's not being asked to do them, another safety is on the field. The coaches are limiting his role for a reason, the only knock on him so far is that he isn't a 3 down safety.
But like I said, we're discussing Chung doing his job, and doing it well. Until his job becomes a fulltime safety and he starts screwing it up, this thread is accurate.
Our S2 spot has not been the problem. It's mostly been bad schemes and LB inability to cover Tight Ends, and in some cases, the other team just executing well.
Tavon Wilson is an example of that, he had outstanding coverage on Scott Chandler today and it just didn't matter. Gronkowski does it to players on a regular basis. Edelman does it. We've seen it for the past 14 seasons with Brady threading needles to players who aren't open.
Sometimes plays happen. It doesn't happen against us NEARLY as much as we do it to other teams.
I don't agree with your premise regarding level of play. I agree with the role change of the S2 on this team. Again, that's something we discussed on the board a while back.
