Here is a look at some articles released in the last few days speculating which veteran NFL players could be impacted by the addition of draft picks. Some notable names are -

-Matt Cassel – QB, Vikings
-Brandon Flowers, CB Chiefs
-Donald Thomas – OL, Colts
-Doug Baldwin, WR Seahawks
-Trent Cole, DE Eagles
-Tamba Hali, DE Chiefs
-Frank Gore, RB 49ers
-Nick Fairley, DT Lions
-Timothy Wright, TE Bucs

Looking at Veteran Players Impacted by the NFL Draft - Over the Cap

I am thinking that Belichick is going to be more active this year in signing other teams cuts, he signed less UDFA than he has in years past and seems to be keeping the roster cleaner in terms of eliminating players that do not have a shot at all.

If Tamba Hali gets cut it'd be nice to see him in New England but he's still productive so another team is likely to give him something close to his current $11m.

Nick Fairley shouldn't be too expensive because he's underwhelmed so far in the league.

According to a Vikings fan on another website I'm on, he expects Cassel to start the season for them.

The Patriots signed 15 UDFAs this year.. How do you figure that is less than in years past?

I would be very surprised if Cassel is released or traded. There was a thread a few days about either he or Hoyer becoming available, letting Cassel go still doesn't make any sense to me from Minnesota's viewpoint.

Cassel is due to make $2,650,000 in base salary plus another $3,000,000 in roster bonus, which from what I have read is all guaranteed. If Minnesota jettisons Cassel then they have only Christian Ponder as their backup quarterback, and that's a scenario that they clearly would prefer to avoid; last season's performance made it clear that he is not worthy of starting, and probably not worth a roster spot as a developmental project either. The trade for Freeman and now the drafting of Bridgewater are clear indications that they have (rightfully) lost faith in Ponder; Cassel is an adequate and legitimate bridge (no pun intended) until their rookie is ready to go, and would serve as a very capable backup should Bridgewater regress or be injured.

The Vikings won only five games in 2013, with three coming with Cassel starting and one more when he played the majority of the game in relief of Ponder. The Vikings have over $10,000,000 in cap space, so I would think that they would keep Cassel and cut Ponder. Cutting or trading Cassel only saves the Vikings $100k in cap space; they would be better served to keep him on the roster for 2014 and then re-assess prior to the 2015 season.

Who are the 15? They signed 19 last year.

Zac Sudfeld?

I think BJGE is gone in Cinci

Actually, they only signed 18 last year. The 19th was signed only to a try-out. If you are going to count try-outs, then the Pats have 20, since there are 5 players coming in for tryouts.

There have been years under Belichick where they have signed less than 10 like in 2012, where they signed only 7. They signed only 9 in 2011. And in 2010, they only signed 7.

I think it's safe to say that 15 is actually a high number for the Patriots, not "less than in the past" unless you want to talk about the 1 year where he signed 18..

The 15 from this year are as follows:
Tyler Beck TE Bowling Green
Roy Finch RB Oklahoma
James Morris LB Iowa
Travis Hawkins DB Delaware
Justin Jones TE East Carolina
Asa Watson TE North Carolina State
Tyler Ott LS Harvard
Cameron Gordon LB Michigan
Jeremy Deering S Rutgers
Deontae Skinner LB Mississippi State
Stephen Houston RB Indiana
Ja-Mes Logan WR Ole Miss
Malcolm Butler, CB, West Alabama
Seali’i Epenesa, DT, UCLA
Deylan Buntyn, DL North Carolina State

Also, the 5 try-outs are:
Tevin Hood, DT, Arizona (Tryout)
Calvin Tonga, NT, Colorado State (Tryout)
Taylor McCuller, ILB, West Texas A&M (Tryout)
Kyle Harbridge RB Saint Francis (Tryout)
Jordan Love CB Towson (Tryout)

They are what the players have said.. They're not "official" until the team announces, but they are expected and haven't changed since Sunday..

Regardless of whether they sign or not, 9 closer to the norm of what BB has signed than 15 or 18 as I pointed out with the 3 years prior to last year.
