Now that Pepper Johnson has left, there are no ex-NFL players on the Patriots staff. Is there a one-time Patriot whom you'd like to see on the coaching staff?

I can only think of two Patriots now coaching in the NFL, Larry Izzo and Mike Vrabel. I don't suppose either of them are available.

My choice: Matt Chatham. Thoughtful, knowledgeable football guy with a strong mind of his own.

Other possibilities: Tedy, Rodney, Troy Brown, Kevin Faulk. Two guys who impressed me a huge amount, even though they weren't here for long: Alge Crumpler, Brian Waters.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

I was disappointed when Bruschi never joined us as a coach. That said, having seen him on ESPN I have to wonder if his seriously clutch play came from 110% heart/instinct and 50% smarts.

The ex-Patriots I'd love to see tomorrow.. or today :D
1. Kevin Faulk
2. Troy Brown

And the ex-Patrionts I'd love to see a couple years down the road
3. Brady
4. Wilfork

Tedy and Rodney.

Ty Law and Stephen Neal. Law is my favorite Patriot and Neal transformed himself from a wrestler to an elite guard.

Teddy, Rodney, John Hanna, Ty Law, Tippet

3. Brady

I don't think Senator Brady will be able to fit that in his schedule.

Wilfork. This year, unless he recovers much more quickly than I think he will.

I think that BB needs a guy who can bridge between himself and the players more than someone who can raise the level of the Brains Trust. That said, I find the Bruschi chat at ESPN really informative. I haven't really listened to him much love.

The best I can say is that, seeing him on the sidelines, he didn't look like a guy whom the medics had warned that his career was likely over. But, if you're right (as I fear) he'd be great. Just needs to drop a few pounds, though. I want him to last a long time!

While Brady hasnt shown any sign of wanting to coach.. I seem to recall he has semi-renounced any intention to go into politics.

Chatham would be great as I'm assuming analyst insight translates into coaching capabilities.
The problem with the bigger Pats names is that many have other lucrative post football options and have made many millions already. A regular coach (not OC or DC) makes what? several hundred thousand per year. Reading Pepper's book, these guys work every day and over 12 hours on many days. That's grueling and must be a labor of highly motivated love if you're already financially secure to take a job that takes you away from most family life and yields ~50% after taxes in that income bracket given the new increased federal tax bracket, high MA income taxes, the new Obamacare surcharges, etc.

The one former Patriot I DON'T want is Tom Brady. I mean, the greatest player this team has ever had, rich, famous, handsome -- the guy the young players will have grown up watching on TV. Do you want him around when it's time to move on from ... Tom Brady?

I dont see any of that as a problem to be honest.

Tom Brady is the paragon of making a career out of hard work, preparation, sheer determination and playing smart.

My players can emulate that any time.

The biggest drawback I believe to Brady as a coach is possibly him not able or willing to put the hours in.

Vrabel tops my list, but as noted he's not available.

Chatham is a good call.

Not Tedy. He's an instincts, heart and charisma guy, not a deep-understanding technician. At least, that's what I think.

I want to say Mike Compton, but Wikipedia suggests he's been stuck at the high school level for quite a while.

Grahambo could be a good choice. He was a very sound technician, and also a team captain.

Anthony Pleasant is a natural choice. He seems to have coached recently.

Chatham, Tedy, Rodney, Ty or Troy would all have to give up their regular jobs, and then have to work about 16 hours a day for 8 months... for less pay than they probably get right now. Particularly Tedy or Rodney, they have very nice gigs...

Why would they do it??

'cause this is a way to pass the time in the off-season? :D

Why does anyone continue to coach once theyve a couple million in the bank?

Love of the game... and the competition to be the best.

And yes :)

James Sanders, Alge Crumpler, Andre Carter, Heath Evans, Willie Mac, Mike Vrabel (I know, he's taken).

I'm rooting for Brandon Meriwether and Scott Zolak to sign onto Rex Ryan's staff.

Stephan Neal

Larry Izzo - Think he is with the Giants?

Rosevelt Colvin

3 former very intelligent players who had to achieve the hard way.

Rosey Colvin and Heath Evans -- good calls! (And I'd forgotten to mention him, but Brian Cox is coaching for the Falcons -- if you want one of those do-what-I-tell-you-or-I'll-tear-your-leg-off types!)
