That's because most people understand that they should keep moronic racist statements to themselves.

Anyway, I'd give a pass to the original poster--maybe he didn't intend it to come out the way it did-- but this kind race-based thinking is really sad.

There was nothing racist about the statement. Noting that, in the poster's opinion, people would be more happy if the player were black doesn't mean that the poster believes either is better just by virtue of their race. It implies, in fact, that the poster feels others may be taking a racist approach.

Gonna have to agree to disagree here, Deus--although I did say that I don't think the original poster intended it to be so. I was actually responding to the second post which said taht "many people" believe this but are "afraid" to say it--implying that it isn't having that view which is offensive, but that being called out for it is the problem.

I guess my main point is that valuing one person over another based on colour is, by definition, racist.--anyway, I'll move on from this now.

I haven't read the whole thread so I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but Welker, in addition to everything else he brings as a player, would give Brady the quick release WR he lost when Branch left. Imo it was clear throughout the year that teams could gamble defensively against the Patriots because they lacked both a deep threat and the WR who get open instantly and give Brady a quick release valve. I thought most of the beating he took was due to that. I's like to see them bring in both a deep threat and a quick release WR like Welker.

Townes, my man!

I take it the other board is still down?

This is exactly right. It wasn't just no one was open deep, a lot of times no one was open, period.

If this goes through, I'm sure Brady will be happy.

Yep, kffl's down, but there's obviously alot going on here and with the Patriots. Best start to an offseason I can remember. Perfect start imo, as they killed needs at LB, RB, and TE immediately, and that allows them to concentrate on other areas, although more LB depth is welcome any way it comes. Address WR and DB in free agency and they will be in great shape come draft day.

I agree. There is good depth in this draft at WR, however. Anthony Gonzalez or Jason Hill might be good options with the Pat's 2nd rounder.
Or Steve Smith. There will be some good options but Welker would be a safe, lower upside way to spend the pick.

Agreed that this has been the best start to an offseason I can remember. The pats came out running and KFFL is down  ...migrated here for the time being like you.

I like that we are going after Welker as he is one of my favorites but giving up a second??? Am not sure how I feel about that. With that said our track record in the second round is not the best so I will feel better about it if it does happen. I still think we need more WR's whether it's through FA or draft.

I'm fine with giving up the 2nd because they have 2 firsts and comp picks coming. This reminds me of the Vrabel signing, where his best days are yet to come, and he'll help them all over the field.

You guys should stay, this is the freeway not compared to that slow moving one lane road :)

This actually happens with KFFL consistently on big NFL days and draft weekend, they simply can't handle the volume and the site goes down.

FYI Miami fans seem pretty stoked at the idea of getting a second for Welker.

Yea, but Miami fans are idiots. They thought Joey Harrington and Daunte Culpepper would lead them to the division title.

True but unlike those situations they've actually seen Welker play for them.

The second round hasn't been kind to us when it comes to Receivers. Other than Branch, most of them have been a disappointment. Bethel Johnson, Chad Jackson...need I say more? I know that Chad is a young kid who has had a lot of trouble with injuries so far in his young career. But the fact is, he was disappointing. Now he has a minor ACL problem. Who knows if he'll be ready for training camp.

I have no problem bringing in Welker. He's young, I like his game, and he has proven that he can play in this league. I would rather give up our second round pick for a WR that we know can play, and we've all seen Welker play, than spend it on a draft pick who we hope can play.

I think it works out for both teams really, the Dolphins need help at a lot of spots while we need to address a couple of areas (which we can do in the first round) then use our 2nd to pick up a guy who will be an immediate upgrade.

He is a solid, improving player and his is only 25 years old. He will be perfect in the slot for our offense, he has some of the same characteristics that made Troy a weapon for us. We still have compensatory selections coming (we should wind up with 4 bonus picks) from last year and 2 1st Rd picks so the loss of a 2nd isn't devastating. A 2nd Rd pick isn't usually a lock, see Bethel and Chad so far. Plus this is pick #60 not #36 which is where we picked Chad Jackson last year.

ESPN article:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2786731
"Surrendering a second-round choice for a player of Welker's abilities would be viewed in most quarters, but especially in New England, as a steal. Welker would dramatically upgrade the New England wide receiver corps and the Pats would also benefit by taking him away from a division opponent.

Plus, the Patriots own a pair of first-round choices in the 2007 draft, and can afford to part with a second-round selection for a player of Welker's skills."

From Scouts:

Comment:
Welker is smart, instinctive and versatile. He works well in the slot and excels as a kickoff and punt return specialist. He is competitive and tough. He has the quickness to avoid at the line and release upfield. He has the awareness to routinely find soft spots in zones. He is an above-average route runner who can be effective in the short and intermediate areas. He has good receiving skills, adjusts well and can catch outside his frame. He is willing and able to go over the middle and catch in a crowd. He is elusive in space and runs with good vision and awareness. He can make defenders miss and knows how to take a hit.

That's probably because most messageboard posters love the draft and want the picks. The fish don't have a second and they have alot of needs so I can see them liking the pick. But Ihave never seen any fish fan say anything other than good about Welker.

Allow me to expound on the "poison pill" thing. Others have posted that the NFL was unable to specifically eliminate its use. HOWEVER, I have read that the league was quite clearly sending the message to teams NOT to use it. I'm not sure exactly what they could do, but basically, the message was that if teams continued to throw in poison pills, the NFL brass would be very, very unhappy with them.

Also, another note that may be of interest: I've got a friend who is a hardcore Dolphins fan (come on, he's been my friend for 15 years), and he tells me that the general consensus in Fin camp is that the team will NOT match the offer for Welker. Apparently GM Mueller wants as many draft picks as he can get his hands on to rebuild the team. Makes sense, but of course its nothing official.
